A major West Antarctic ice stream discharges by sudden and brief periods of very rapid motion paced by oceanic tidal oscillations of about 1 meter. Acceleration to speeds greater than 1 meter per hour and deceleration back to a stationary state occur in minutes or less. Slip propagates at approximately 88 meters per second, suggestive of a shear wave traveling within the subglacial till. A model of an episodically slipping friction-locked fault reproduces the observed quasi-periodic event timing, demonstrating an ice stream's ability to change speed rapidly and its extreme sensitivity to subglacial conditions and variations in sea level.  相似文献

Phytochemical investigation of Caralluma adscendens var. gracilis and Caralluma pauciflora (Asclepiadaceae) whole plant extracts allowed to isolate one pregnane glycoside and two pregnanes characterized as 12β,20-O-dibenzoyl-5α,6-dihydrosarcostin β-oleandropyranosyl-(1→4)-β-cymaropyranosyl-(1→4)-β-digitoxypyranosyl-(1→4)-β-cymaropyranosyl-(1→4)-β-cymaropyranoside (1), 12β-O-benzoyl-3β,11α,14β,20R-pentahydroxy-pregn-5-ene (2), and 11α-O-benzoyl-3β,12β,14β,20R-pentahydroxy-pregn-5-ene (3), respectively. Their structural characterization was obtained on the basis of extensive NMR spectral studies. Three known pregnane glycosides along with lupeol and β-sitosterol were also isolated and characterized.  相似文献

Purpose  

A large amount of nitrogen (N) fertilizers has been broadcasted over soil surface for reliable crop production. Unfortunately, the broadcasted N vulnerable to volatilization and leaching can lead to serious environmental problems. As a new approach to mitigate N loss of broadcasted fertilizers, massive intercalation of urea into montmorillonite (MMT) was recently proposed to innovatively enhance the urea use efficiency. Three phase partitioning has been evaluated for extraction of oil from Jatropha curcas L. seeds. This process consisted of simultaneous addition of t-butanol (1:1, v/v) and 30% (w/v) ammonium sulphate to the slurry prepared from Jatropha seed kernels. Combination of sonication and enzyme treatment with a commercial preparation of fungal proteases at pH 9, led to 97% oil yield within 2 h.  相似文献

The accumulation of germanium (Ge) by barley (Hordeum vulgare cv. ‘Arivat') grown at various Ge and pH levels was investigated because Ge is an industrially important metal and bioaccumulation of Ge is a potentially useful means of concentrating this trace metal. Six‐day‐old barley seedlings were grown in perlite and nutrient solution adjusted to a pH of 4.5, 6.0, or 7.5 supplemented with 20, 40,60, or 80 μM Ge for seven days. The plants were divided into roots and shoots after harvesting; the dry weight and Ge content of the individual organs were measured, as was the peroxidase activity in the distal 1 cm of the primary leaves. Barley seedlings accumulated Ge in the roots and shoots; the shoots accumulated Ge linearly as medium Ge concentration increased. The dry weight of the organs was not affected, although necrosis was observed in the primary leaves of the seedlings treated with Ge concentrations greater than 20μM. Peroxidase activity in the primary leaves also increased as the Ge levels in the medium increased which indicated that elevated levels of Ge stimulated leaf senescence. These results demonstrate that barley plants can take up Ge and suggest that Ge is not toxic at the levels that might occur in areas where Ge is normally mined.  相似文献

A survey was carried out among 40 ornamental plant cultivators in three major cities in Nigeria, Lagos, Ibadan, and Abeokuta on their cultivation practices using compost. The newly emerging industry is in need of a large supply of compost. No chemical fertilizers are currently being used. Over 30 varieties of ornamental plants are cultivated throughout the year.

Some of the identified constraints seemed to be water shortage, sufficient capital, availability of farm inputs, low demand in smaller towns and villages, pilfering and insect damage, and nonavailability of land, high cost of labor and transportation. The respondents expressed their need for proper training and guidance on the preparation and use of their own composts and control of pests and weeds.  相似文献

This study aims to determine leaf litter preference, consumption rate, growth rate, food conversion efficiency, and quality of fecal pellets of two endemic pill millipedes (Arthrosphaera dalyi and Arthrosphaera davisoni) of the Western Ghats of India by laboratory microcosm experiments. Among seven combinations of three plantation leaf litters offered in 4-day trial, top three preferred combinations were selected for 4-week trial. In 4-week trial, preference of mixed litter diet was higher than single litter diet, which resulted in enhanced growth as well as food conversion efficiency of millipedes. Among Hopea , Pongamia , and Areca litters, A. dalyi preferred Hopea + Pongamia, and its consumption was significantly correlated with contents of organic carbon (P < 0.05; r = –0.97) and nitrogen (P < 0.01; r = 0.99), while growth rate with phosphorus content (P < 0.05; r = 0.97) and food conversion efficiency with contents of organic carbon (P < 0.05; r = 0.98) and calcium (P < 0.01; r = –0.99). Among Areca , Elettaria , and Coffea litters, Areca + Elettaria+ Coffea was most preferred by A. davisoni, which was significantly correlated with organic carbon content (P < 0.05; r = 0.98) and food conversion efficiency with calcium content (P < 0.0001; r = 0.99). The food conversion efficiency, however, was the highest in millipedes fed with Areca  +  Elettaria. The present study demonstrated increased nitrogen and phosphorus contents and decreased phenolic content and C/N ratio in fecal pellets of pill millipedes fed with plantation litter, and thus, these millipedes play an important role in leaf litter mineralization and soil enrichment in plantations Western Ghats.  相似文献

In the present study, a comparative assessment of 2,4,6-T (2,4,6-Trichlorophenol) degradation by different AOPs (Advanced Oxidation Processes – UV, UV/ H2O2, Fenton, UV/Fenton and UV/TiO2) in the laboratory scale is performed. The effects of different reactant concentrations and pH are assessed. 2,4,6-T removal, Total Organic Carbon mineralization (TOC) and dechlorination are monitored. Of all the AOPs, UV/Fenton process is more effective in degrading 2,4,6-T. The optimum conditions obtained for the best degradation with UV/Fenton are: pH?=?3, Fe+2 concentration of about 5 ppm, and peroxide concentration of 100 ppm for an initial 100 ppm of 2,4,6 T concentration at room temperature. In these conditions, a pseudo first-order rate constant is evaluated.
