The effect of different levels and forms of nitrogen (N) fertilizer on cadmium (Cd) concentrations in potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) tubers, a large component of the northern European diet, was investigated with the aim of decreasing the Cd content. A high and a low Cd-accumulating cultivar were used in two field trials and a pot experiment. The N fertilizers tested were balanced N- phosphorus (P)- potassium (K) 11-5-18 + micronutrients, alkaline calcium nitrate and acidic ammonium sulfate at levels of 60, 160, and 240 kg N ha?1 at planting or (for the higher N doses) split between two or three occasions. The Cd concentration in tubers of both cultivars decreased when increasing the N fertilizer from 60 to 160 or 240 kg N ha?1, indicating that Cd uptake and translocation are not positively correlated to the growth rate of the potato plant. A strong positive linear correlation was found between the Cd concentration in leaves at 77 days after planting and the Cd concentration in tubers at harvest, irrespective of N treatment, although the Cd concentration was three-fold higher in the leaves. The genetic variation in leaf and tuber Cd accumulation was consistent, regardless of the form of N fertilizer used. Ammonium sulfate decreased soil pH and increased tuber Cd concentration in both cultivars compared with NPK fertilizer, possibly due to increased amounts of plant-available Cd arising from the pH decrease after ammonium sulfate application. The tuber Cd concentration in the low Cd-accumulating cultivar increased when fertilized with calcium nitrate, an effect attributed to Cd availability being influenced by the increased Ca2+ concentration. 相似文献

Arthropod predators and detritivores are among the first colonisers on land surfaces undergoing primary succession. In the absence of higher plants and herbivores, they may either have an allochthonous food source (i.e. of geographically distant origin) or local food source that is sustained by e.g. microorganisms. By studying spiders and collembolans on sites along chronosequences on recently emerged nunataks (ice-free land in glacial areas), we analysed whether the food source of early colonisers was of local or distant origin. Also, we measured the potential changes in trophic position with increasing site age. With stable carbon and nitrogen isotope analysis of both spiders and collembolans, we determined that allochthonous food sources are important on the youngest sites. The allochthonous food sources may explain how arthropods can persist in the absence of local primary productivity. Also, some spider species may increase their ability to survive by shifting their trophic position as the community composition changes. The results indicate that a wolf spider species shifted towards a lower trophic level with increasing site age. By contrast, no shifts in trophic position were observed for sheet-web spiders or collembolans. 相似文献

The fibrillar orientation in the S2-layer of wood fibres as determined by X-ray diffraction analysis
Summary It is the fibrillar orientation in the S2-layer which to a great extent determines the mechanical properties of the wood fibre, with regard both to strength and stiffness and to swelling properties. Measurements of the average fibril angle of fibres are not however easy and the results differ between the methods used. In order to evaluate in more detail how the fibril angle varies in spruce wood, an X-ray method based on diffraction from the 040-plane was developed. By comparison with microscopic examination it is concluded that reliable results relating to the fibrillar orientation in the S2-layer are obtained with the X-ray technique. It is shown that the fibril angle of mature wood is rather constant with regard to both age of the annual ring and its position in the height of the tree. The fibril angle of the earlywood is found to be only slightly higher than that of latewood fibres. During their life cycle as farmed animals, there are several situations in which fish are subjected to handling and confinement.
Netting, weighing, sorting, vaccination, transport and, at the end, slaughter are frequent events under farming conditions.
As research subjects, fish may also undergo surgical procedures that range from tagging, sampling and small incisions to invasive
procedures. In these situations, treatment with anaesthetic agents may be necessary in order to ensure the welfare of the
fish. The main objective of this paper is to review our knowledge of the effects of anaesthetic agents in farmed fish and
their possible implications for welfare. As wide variations in response to anaesthesia have been observed both between and
within species, special attention has been paid to the importance of secondary factors such as body weight, water temperature
and acute stress. In this review, we have limited ourselves to the anaesthetic agents such as benzocaine, metacaine (MS-222),
metomidate hydrochloride, isoeugenol, 2-phenoxyethanol and quinaldine. Anaesthetic protocols of fish usually refer to one
single agent, whereas protocols of human and veterinary medicine cover combinations of several drugs, each contributing to
the effects needed in the anaesthesia. As stress prior to anaesthesia may result in abnormal reactions, pre-anaesthetic sedation
is regularly used in order to reduce or avoid stress and is an integral part of the veterinary protocols of higher vertebrates.
Furthermore, the anaesthetic agents that are used in order to obtain general anaesthesia are combined with analgesic agents
that target nociception. The increased use of such combinations in fish is therefore included as a special section. Anaesthetic
agents are widely used to avoid stress during various farming procedures. While several studies report that anaesthetics are
effective in reducing the stress associated with confinement and handling, there are indications that anaesthesia may in itself
induce a stress response, measured by elevated levels of cortisol. MS-222 has been reported to elicit high cortisol release
rates immediately following exposure, while benzocaine causes a bimodal response. Metomidate has an inhibitory effect on cortisol
in fish and seems to induce the lowest release of cortisol of the agents reported in the literature. Compared to what is observed
following severe stressors such as handling and confinement, the amount of cortisol released in response to anaesthesia appears
to be low but may represent an extra load under otherwise stressful circumstances. Furthermore, anaesthetics may cause secondary
adverse reactions such as acidosis and osmotic stress due to respiratory arrest and insufficient exchange of gas and ions
between the blood and the water. All in all, anaesthetics may reduce stress and thereby improve welfare but can also have
unwanted side effects that reduce the welfare of the fish and should therefore always be used with caution. Finally, on the
basis of the data reported in the literature and our own experience, we recommend that anaesthetic protocols should always
be tested on a few fish under prevailing conditions in order to ensure an adequate depth of anaesthesia. This recommendation
applies whether a single agent or a combination of agents is used, although it appears that protocols comprising combinations
of agents provide wider safety margins. The analgesic effects of currently used agents, in spite of their proven local effects,
are currently being debated as the agents are administrated to fish via inhalation rather than locally at the target site.
We therefore recommend that all protocols of procedures requiring general anaesthesia should be complemented by administration
of agents with analgesic effect at the site of tissue trauma. 相似文献

Recovery of phosphorus fertilizer in potato as affected by application strategy and soil type 下载免费PDF全文
Phosphorus (P) fertilizers are usually supplied prior to or at planting of potato even though most P is taken up 40 to 80 d after emergence. This may lead to inefficient P use as a result of P leaching or fixation in the soil. This study evaluates the effects of split P application at multiple times during the growth period according to the plant's need for P. Potato (Solanum tuberosum L. cv. Ditta) was grown in pots in climate chambers, and radioactive 32P isotope was used to distinguish between the fertilizer and soil‐derived P sources. Two soils were tested in combination with five application rates of P, and the plants were harvested at four dates. The results show that the recovery of P fertilizer can be significantly enhanced if the P supply is split. The result also showed that the proportion of soil‐derived P, accumulated in the plant, was significantly reduced both when more fertilizer P was applied to the soil and when P supply was split into several applications. The positive effects of multiple P applications on the P recovery were greatest in the soil with low P status and low buffer capacity. 相似文献

Yeast is a potential alternative to fish meal in diets for farmed fish, yet replacing more than 50 % of fish meal results in reduced fish growth. In a 4-week experiment, 15 rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were cannulated and fed three diets each week: 30 % fish meal as a control (FM); 60 % replacement of fish meal protein, on a digestible basis, with Saccharomyces cerevisiae (SC); and 60 % replacement with Wickerhamomyces anomalus and S. cerevisiae mix (WA). Blood was collected at 0, 3, 6, 12 and 24 h after feeding. In the final week, fish were exposed to a 1-min netting stressor to evaluate possible diet–stress interactions. Significant increases in pH, TCO2, HCO3 and base excess were found after fish were fed the SC and WA diets compared with FM, which elevated blood alkaline tides. Yeast ingredients had lower buffering capacity and ash content than fish meal, which explained the increase in alkaline tides. In addition, fish fed the WA diet had significantly reduced erythrocyte area and fish fed SC and WA diets had increased mean corpuscular haemoglobin levels, indicating haemolytic anaemia. Higher levels of nucleic acid in yeast-based diets and potentially higher production of reactive oxygen species were suspected of damaging haemoglobin, which require replacement by smaller immature erythrocytes. Acute stress caused the expected rise in cortisol and glucose levels, but no interaction with diet was found. These results show that replacing 60 % of fish meal protein with yeasts can induce haemolytic anaemia in rainbow trout, which may limit yeast inclusion in diets for farmed fish. 相似文献

Studies of contest competition between wild and farmed fish have mostly focused on fish with strongly territorial behaviour. Little is known about species with more plastic social behaviour, such as Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua L.), a species that can either aggressively defend territories or shoal. There is also concern that cod that escape from farms will compete with wild populations. We examined dyadic contest competition between wild and farmed juvenile cod using an intruder–resident experimental set‐up in the laboratory. No prior residency advantage was observed, but the differences between farmed and wild cod were clear. Farmed cod were more submissive than wild cod and fled earlier during contests, which suggests that wild fish often out‐compete farmed intruders. Both fish types initiated aggression earlier against fish of the same background. A multivariate analysis of 11 different behavioural traits indicated that a group of 59% of farmed fish were behaviourally very similar to the 55% most submissive wild fish. These results suggest that wild juvenile cod may be quite robust towards competition for food and shelter from juvenile farmed cod, but further research is needed to verify this pattern. 相似文献

A fish meal supply shortage is limiting aquaculture development. Currently, plant‐based proteins, such as soya bean meal, are being used as an alternative protein source, despite that such a diet can adversely affect fish, such as by inducing an inflammatory response. A possible solution is to include dietary additives in farm diets to counteract negative effects. One such solution originates from pine bark extracts, which present bioactive properties. In this study, the antioxidant and anti‐inflammatory properties of Pinus radiata bark extracts were evaluated for the first time in a salmonid cell line. This extract chemically demonstrated antioxidant activity through 2,2‐diphenyl‐1‐picrylhydrazyl (DPPH = 58.4 ± 1.1%) and ferric ion reducing antioxidant power (FRAP = 575 ± 17 mgEqFe(II)·g extract?1) assays. Additionally, the extract showed high flavonoid and phenolic compound contents. Up to 100 mg mL?1, the P. radiata extract showed no cytotoxicity in the CHSE‐214 salmonid embryo cell line. Moreover, the antioxidant activity of the extract (50 μg mL?1) was evaluated by a dichlorofluorescein (DCFH) assay in the SHK‐1 salmon cell line challenged with an oxidant stimulus (H2O2), showing 58.9% activity. The extract also protected DNA from oxidative damage, as observed through a comet assay. When assessing anti‐inflammatory properties in an in vitro inflammation model, the extract significantly reduced the relative expression of the pro‐inflammatory cytokines interleukin‐1β (IL‐1β), tumour necrosis factor‐α (TNF‐α) and interleukin‐8 (IL‐8) and of the inducible cyclooxygenase‐2 (COX‐2) enzyme. These results suggest a potential application of P. radiata bark extract in functional foods in aquaculture. 相似文献
