A 120-acre shrimp farm located in southeast Texas has failed for three years to produce expected yields of shrimp despite intensive management. Data obtained from these ponds are combined with observations from other culture facilities to support the hypothesis that the degree of mixing of pond water is the primary limitation to oxygenation of the benthic biomass in a shrimp culture pond. The implication of this conclusion is that shrimp ponds are advection limited; therefore, rational design of such facilities will require detailed data concerning the impact of interactions of pond size, depth and geometry with wind speed, and aerator placement, upon pond mixing.  相似文献

The effect of rearing temperature on the growth and maturation of Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) was investigated. Arctic charr juveniles were reared for 6 months (phase I, October–April, size range 20–500 g) at constant temperatures of 9, 12 and 15 °C and according to two temperature‐step groups (Tstep) i.e. fish transferred from 15 to 12 °C or from 12 to 9 °C. All the previous treatments were then reared either at 7 °C or at 12 °C for an additional 4 months (phase II, size range 300–1000 g) and then slaughtered in August 2008. The overall growth rate was the highest at a constant temperature of 15 °C for the first 6 months of the trial, with the fish in this group being 44% and 78% heavier than the fish reared at a constant temperature of 12 or 9 °C respectively. Arctic charr showed a negative response in terms of the growth rate when transferred from higher to lower temperatures, especially for groups previously reared at 15 °C. There was a trend for higher gonadosomatic index values at the end of the experiment for groups of fish that were exposed to higher rearing temperatures during the juvenile phase i.e. 4.18% (±0.79) and 7.29% (±0.89), for the temperature groups of 12 and 15 °C, respectively, compared with 2.49% (±0.74) for the 9 °C group. Our results suggest that for the production of fish >1000 g, moderate or low temperatures (here 9 °C) should be applied during the juvenile phase in order to reduce the negative effects arising from maturation. Farmers with access to heat sources should accordingly choose more moderate rearing temperatures during the juvenile stage, especially if the fish is to be moved down in the temperature regime during the on‐growing period.  相似文献

This study evaluated the use of hydrolysed rubber seed meal as a locally grown alternative feed ingredient to reduce the use of fishmeal within formulated feeds for tilapia. Five experimental diets were prepared by formulating different inclusion levels of hydrolysed rubber seed meal (0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% of plant‐based protein contribution). Dried and defatted rubber seed meal was hydrolysed by adding rumen digesta liquid to the ingredient. For digestibility measurement, chromic oxide was added to each diet as an inert marker. The digestibility trial was conducted over a 14‐day period by collecting faecal matter from the rearing tanks. In addition, a growth trial was conducted over a period of 50 days using four replicates per dietary treatment. In both experiments, all fish were fed three times daily to apparent satiation. At the end of growth trial, the inclusion level of hydrolysed rubber seed meal up to 50% of plant‐based protein contribution did not give any significant difference compared to the control diet in terms of feed efficiency, specific growth rate and protein retention parameters. In the digestibility study, fish fed diets containing hydrolysed rubber seed meal up to a 50% of plant‐based protein inclusion level did not give any significant difference compared to the control diet in terms of protein and dry matter apparent digestibility. Based on the result of this growth and digestibility study, up to a 50% of plant‐based protein contribution of hydrolysed rubber seed meal can be used within formulated tilapia feeds without any adverse effect.  相似文献

Oogenesis in fishes follows a universal plan; yet, due to differences in the synchrony and rate of egg development, spawning frequency varies from daily to once in a lifetime. Some species spawn and feed in separate areas, during different seasons, by storing energy and drawing on it later for reproduction (i.e. capital breeding). Other species spawn using energy acquired locally, throughout a prolonged spawning season, allocating energy directly to reproduction (i.e. income breeding). Capital breeders tend to ovulate all at once and are more likely to be distributed at boreal latitudes. Income breeding allows small fish to overcome allometric constraints on egg production. Income breeders can recover more quickly when good‐feeding conditions are re‐established, which is a benefit to adults regarding bet‐hedging spawning strategies. Many species exhibit mixed capital‐ and income‐breeding patterns. An individual's position along this capital–income continuum may shift with ontogeny or in relation to environmental conditions, so breeding patterns are a conditional reproductive strategy. Poor‐feeding environments can lead to delayed maturation, skipped spawning, fewer spawning events per season or fewer eggs produced per event. In a few cases, variations in feeding environments appear to affect recruitment variability. These flexible processes of energy acquisition and allocation allow females to prioritize their own condition over their propagules' condition at any given spawning opportunity, thereby investing energy cautiously to maximize lifetime reproductive value. These findings have implications for temporal and spatial sampling designs, for measurement and interpretation of fecundity, and for interpreting fishery and ecosystem assessments.  相似文献

A series of 14 on-farm trials indicated that improved seed-storage facilities, in the form of additional diffuse light and ventilation, may considerably reduce losses of seed-tubers and result in a better quality product: less weight loss in store, more sprouts per tuber and shorter, more robust, sprouts. This improvement resulted generally in improved emergence, stem number per hill, yield of marketable tubers and economic return. The improved onfarm stores compared favourably with the refrigerated storage available locally.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the cortisol response of spotted wolffish (Anarhichas minor) after exposure to air immersion and netting (acute stress) under a range of increasing densities (chronic stressor). In addition, the presence of a cumulative negative impact from chronic stress was assessed by the application of an additional acute stressor following rearing at various densities, and proxies of behavior were evaluated (feeding and aggression data). The stress response to air immersion and netting led to increasing plasma cortisol values at 0.5, 13, and 37 h post-stress, with the highest value achieved after 13 h. At 168 h, cortisol concentrations returned to similar pre-stress value. Changes in cortisol concentrations were relatively low after acute stress (five to six fold increases) and recovery time long lasting (>37 h). Prolonged rearing at 20, 30, and 40 kg m?2 showed a non-significant trend of increasing cortisol values with increasing density, and the cortisol response after the application of an additional acute stressor was significantly altered, i.e., higher cortisol levels were measured in unstressed (chronic stress only) compared to stressed fish (chronic stress + acute stress). Our results suggest that (1) spotted wolffish is a low responder that additionally displays a long-lasting cortisol elevation following an acute stressor; (2) fixed densities did not lead to significant differences of plasma cortisol concentration or aggression levels, although involved marked changes in daily feed intake and food conversion efficiency were observed; and (3) cortisol levels reached acute stress values after prolonged chronic stress. Although this species displays indications of being relatively resistant to handling disturbances during aquaculture practices, it is nevertheless responsive to chronic stress factors that could alter the physiological response to subsequent acute stressor.  相似文献

In order to study the effect of rearing juvenile halibut in different social environments, individually tagged juvenile halibut were size-graded into two size classes (Large, L, and Small, S) with ungraded fish as control. After ca 6 weeks, the two size-graded groups were again graded into two size classes creating four experimental groups: Large of the Large (LL), Small of the Large (SL), Large of the Small (LS), and Small of the Small (SS). Grading (overall mean of the four grading groups) improved growth rate by 10% compared with ungraded controls, but the effect was also significantly affected by social environments, because in the latter half of the experiment overall growth was improved by 11 and 12% in the two groups with larger size variation (i.e. SL and LS, respectively) compared with the two other groups (i.e. LL and SS). Significant size rank correlations were maintained during the experiment, these were higher in the ungraded (Control) group and the SS and LL groups than in the SL and LS groups. Further, the degree of mean rank position changes varied between the experimental groups and was higher in the SL (20.7) and LS (25.6) groups than in the Control (10.5), LL (15.1), and SS (15.4) groups. This could possibly indicate a stronger social hierarchy in the last three groups. Growth rate differences may be the product of different degrees of interactions among individuals, and based on the higher overall growth rates in the groups with larger size variation (i.e. SL, LS) it is concluded that juvenile halibut should not be too intensively size graded.
