The plant species composition of seminatural woods in Northeast Ireland was recorded. Three main types of woodland were identified in habitats where combinations of steep slope, poor drainage and accumulations of large boulders have, in the past, made them unsuitable for agriculture. Despite these characteristics, clearance for agriculture is proceeding rapidly, but mainly in woods from poorly drained sites. Badly drained woods also have a relatively higher proportion of regionally rare plant species and there is, therefore, an argument for some priority for their conservation.
The population size-structures of trees were used to predict future changes in canopy composition, possibly originating from the introduction of myxomatosis to Ireland. Such changes may give rise to management problems associated with canopy closure and a subsequent reduction of species diversity. 相似文献

The Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) unit of the U.S. Forest Service has collected, compiled, and made available plot data from three measurement periods (identified as 1977, 1990, and 2003, respectively) within Minnesota. Yet little if any research has compared the relative utility of these datasets for developing empirical yield models. This paper compares these and other subdatasets in the context of fitting a basal area (B) yield model to plot data from the aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) forest type. In addition, several models and fitting methods are compared for their applicability and stability over time. Results suggest that the three parent datasets, along with their subdatasets, provide very similar three parameter B yield model prediction capability, but as model complexity increases, variability in coefficient estimates increases between datasets. The absence of data for older aspen stands and the inherent noise within B data prevented the exact determination of an overall best model. However, the model B = b1Sb2(1 − exp( − b3A)) with site index (S) and stand age (A) as predictors was found consistently among the highest in precision and stability. Additionally, nonlinear least squares and nonlinear mixed-effects fitting procedures produced similar model fits, but the latter is preferred for its potential to improve model projections. The results indicate little practical difference between datasets from different time periods and different sizes when used for fitting the models. Additionally, these results will likely extend to other states or regions with similar remeasurement data on aspen and other forest types, thus facilitating the development of other ecological models focused on forest management. 相似文献

Interactions with food components may alter the resistance of food proteins to digestion, a property thought to play an important role in determining allergenic properties. The kinetics of breakdown of the bovine milk allergen alpha-lactalbumin during in vitro gastrointestinal digestion was found to be altered by interactions with physiologically relevant levels of phosphatidylcholine (PC), a surfactant that is abundant both in milk and is actively secreted by the stomach. Breakdown during gastric digestion was slowed in the presence of PC and accompanied by small alterations in the profile of resulting peptides, with little effect being observed during subsequent duodenal digestion. alpha-Lactalbumin was found to unfold at gastric (acid) pH, giving a CD spectrum similar to that obtained for the partially folded state it is known to adopt at pH values below its isoelectric point. Fluorescence polarization studies performed at low pH indicated that this partially unfolded form of the protein was able to penetrate into the PC vesicles. These interactions are probably responsible for the slowing of gastric digestion by reducing the accessibility of the protein to pepsin. These findings show that interactions with other food components, such as lipids, may alter the rate of breakdown of food proteins in the gastrointestinal tract. It underlines the importance of the food matrix in affecting patterns of food allergen digestion and hence presentation to the immune system and that in vitro digestion systems used for assessing digestibility of allergens must take account of surfactants. 相似文献

Yellow perch (Perca flavescens) were collected from six small acidic lakes in northwestern New Jersey. Analyses of muscle tissue identified a pattern of increased concentrations of Hg in fish from the most acidic lakes; levels of Cd and Pb were greatly elevated in livers of specimens from two of the most acidic lakes. At one site, Sunfish Pond, positive correlations between fish size and Hg levels in muscle and Cd concentrations in livers were detected. Here, we report evidence for the production of ozone in human disease. Signature products unique to cholesterol ozonolysis are present within atherosclerotic tissue at the time of carotid endarterectomy, suggesting that ozone production occurred during lesion development. Furthermore, advanced atherosclerotic plaques generate ozone when the leukocytes within the diseased arteries are activated in vitro. The steroids produced by cholesterol ozonolysis cause effects that are thought to be critical to the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, including cytotoxicity, lipid-loading in macrophages, and deformation of the apolipoprotein B-100 secondary structure. We propose the trivial designation "atheronals" for this previously unrecognized class of steroids. 相似文献

Antigenic and genetic analysis of the hemagglutinin of approximately 13,000 human influenza A (H3N2) viruses from six continents during 2002-2007 revealed that there was continuous circulation in east and Southeast Asia (E-SE Asia) via a region-wide network of temporally overlapping epidemics and that epidemics in the temperate regions were seeded from this network each year. Seed strains generally first reached Oceania, North America, and Europe, and later South America. This evidence suggests that once A (H3N2) viruses leave E-SE Asia, they are unlikely to contribute to long-term viral evolution. If the trends observed during this period are an accurate representation of overall patterns of spread, then the antigenic characteristics of A (H3N2) viruses outside E-SE Asia may be forecast each year based on surveillance within E-SE Asia, with consequent improvements to vaccine strain selection. 相似文献

Genetic analyses of permafrost and temperate sediments reveal that plant and animal DNA may be preserved for long periods, even in the absence of obvious macrofossils. In Siberia, five permafrost cores ranging from 400,000 to 10,000 years old contained at least 19 different plant taxa, including the oldest authenticated ancient DNA sequences known, and megafaunal sequences including mammoth, bison, and horse. The genetic data record a number of dramatic changes in the taxonomic diversity and composition of Beringian vegetation and fauna. Temperate cave sediments in New Zealand also yielded DNA sequences of extinct biota, including two species of ratite moa, and 29 plant taxa characteristic of the prehuman environment. Therefore, many sedimentary deposits may contain unique, and widespread, genetic records of paleoenvironments. 相似文献

In mammalian cells, repair of DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) by nonhomologous end-joining (NHEJ) is critical for genome stability. Although the end-bridging and ligation steps of NHEJ have been reconstituted in vitro, little is known about the end-processing reactions that occur before ligation. Recently, functionally homologous end-bridging and ligation activities have been identified in prokarya. Consistent with its homology to polymerases and nucleases, we demonstrate that DNA ligase D from Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mt-Lig) possesses a unique variety of nucleotidyl transferase activities, including gap-filling polymerase, terminal transferase, and primase, and is also a 3' to 5' exonuclease. These enzyme activities allow the Mt-Ku and Mt-Lig proteins to join incompatible DSB ends in vitro, as well as to reconstitute NHEJ in vivo in yeast. These results demonstrate that prokaryotic Ku and ligase form a bona fide NHEJ system that encodes all the recognition, processing, and ligation activities required for DSB repair. 相似文献

During asexual development within erythrocytes, malaria parasites synthesize considerable amounts of membrane. This activity provides an attractive target for chemotherapy because it is absent from mature erythrocytes. We found that compounds that inhibit phosphatidylcholine biosynthesis de novo from choline were potent antimalarial drugs. The lead compound, G25, potently inhibited in vitro growth of the human malaria parasites Plasmodium falciparum and P. vivax and was 1000-fold less toxic to mammalian cell lines. A radioactive derivative specifically accumulated in infected erythrocytes to levels several hundredfold higher than in the surrounding medium, and very low dose G25 therapy completely cured monkeys infected with P. falciparum and P. cynomolgi. 相似文献
