This study investigated the efficacy of fixed-time laparoscopic intra-uterine insemination of farmed fallow deer (Dama dama) with frozen-thawed or fresh semen. In the trials with frozen-thawed semen, a total of 547 mature non-lactating does across five New Zealand farms were used. For oestrous synchronisation and artificial insemination, a standard control regimen was applied to at least 30% of the does on each farm, involving the insertion of single CIDR type-G devices intravaginally for 14 days, deposition of 50 x 10(6) frozen-thawed spermatozoa at 65 hours after withdrawal of the CIDR device and the continuous presence of vasectomised bucks from the insertion of the CIDR device until 10 days after insemination. Various aspects of this protocol were changed for the remaining does on each farm, including inseminations at 60 or 70 hours, the absence of vasectomised bucks, insemination with 25 x 10(6) or 10 x 10(6) spermatozoa, synchronisation with CIDR type-S devices and synchronisation with prostaglandin. The conception rate, based on rectal ultrasonography at 45 days after insemination, was 67% across all treatments (n=547). Corrected conception rates (+/-s.e.), calculated following between-farm adjustments, were 67+/- 3% for the control regimen, 67+/- 9% and 73 +/- 8% for inseminations at 60 and 70 hours respectively, 61 +/- 9% for absence of bucks, 80 +/- 8% and 74 +/- 9% for inseminations with 25 x 10(6) and 10 x 10(6) spermatozoa respectively, 62 +/- 10% for CIDR type-S device synchronisation, and 49 +/- 10% for prostaglandin synchronisation. Despite apparent differences, none of the treatments resulted in adjusted conception rates that were significantly different from the control regimen (P>0.01). In the trials with fresh semen, 216 does in the USA were inseminated at 69-71 hours after withdrawal of the CIDR device using either cryopreserved semen from New Zealand (n=158; 25 x 10(6) spermatozoa per inseminate) or fresh semen (n=58; 7.5 x10(6) to 20 x 10(6) spermatozoa per inseminate) collected less than 10 hours earlier. The overall conception rates were 77% and 81% respectively, with no significant differences between semen type (frozen v. fresh) or fresh spermatozoa number per inseminate (P>0.01). A further 102 does in New Zealand similarly received fresh semen from 3/4 Mesopotamian buck. Doses of 10 x 10(6) (n=35), 5 x 10(6) (n=32) or 2.5 x 10(6) (n=35) spermatozoa per inseminate were delivered at 69-71 hours after withdrawal of the CIDR device. The conception rates were 77%, 66% and 51% respectively, reflecting a dose effect (P<0.05). However, 1/4 Mesopotamian does in the group (n=19) exhibited higher conception rates (95% overall) irrespective of semen dose, possibly indicating a semen/recipient genotype interaction. It is concluded that laparoscopic intra-uterine insemination of fallow deer with frozen-thawed or fresh semen at fixed intervals after removal of a CIDR device can give acceptable conception rates under a range of on-farm management options and semen doses. 相似文献

Heat stress and dusty conditions are common challenges for cattle during the summer, and a typical method of alleviating these problems involves sprinkling cattle and pens with water. The effect of sprinkling water on the incidence of zoonotic pathogens has not been previously studied. Four pens of heifers (n = 41) were cooled using sprinklers, and four pens (n = 43) served as controls. Heifers were crossbred Charolais, with white and red hair coats. Sprinkling was initiated when cattle were on full concentrate feed (July). Fecal samples, hide swipes, and BW were collected on d 0, 28, 63, 95, and 98. Average daily gain, DMI, and G:F were calculated, and carcass traits were collected 36 h after processing. Performance data were analyzed as a randomized complete block design, and zoonotic pathogen data were analyzed using chi2 analysis. Sprinkling tended (P = 0.054) to increase the incidence of fecal Salmonella spp. populations on d 98, but simultaneously tended to decrease (P = 0.058) the Escherichia coli O157:H7 incidence on hides on d 98. The most prevalent Salmonella serovars in this study were Kentucky, Muenster, Meleagridis, and Cerro. Performance measures and carcass traits did not differ between treatments (P > 0.10). Under our conditions, sprinkling cattle with water did not affect the incidence of zoonotic pathogens in feces or on hides. 相似文献

A 23-year-old captive female California sea lion (Zalophus californianus) developed an inferiotemporal subconjunctival swelling of the right eye. Surgical excision of the mass was performed and a diagnosis of orbital fat prolapse was confirmed histopathologically. There was no recurrence of orbital fat prolapse at 15 months post operatively. Thirty-eight mature horses were assigned to one of two equal groups to evaluate two treatments consisting of either 24 hours of continuous road transport (24T) or two 12-hour periods of transport separated by off-loading, resting and feeding the horses for 12 hours (12/12T). A subset of six horses from each group served as controls for the other group. The horses were loaded into a commercial straight-deck trailer and travelled loose in one of two standard-sized compartments. After the journeys the horses were put back into their paddocks for a 24-hour recovery period. Venous blood samples were collected before loading, after unloading and after the 24-hour recovery period. Transport significantly increased the horses' cortisol concentrations, neutrophil counts and neutrophil:lymphocyte (nl) ratios, and decreased the numbers of all the lymphocyte subpopulation cell types. Collectively, no significant differences were observed between the two treatments in the horses' cortisol concentrations, total leucocyte counts, neutrophil and lymphocyte counts, nl ratios, and the cd8a+ and cd21+ lymphocyte subpopulations, but there were differences in the numbers of cd3+, cd4+, and cd8b+ subpopulations. The inclusion of a 12-hour rest-stop interrupted the transport-related decline in the lymphocyte subpopulations and allowed them to recover towards their resting levels. 相似文献

Vomiting, often caused by mechanical intestinal obstruction, is common in dogs. Equivocal radiographic signs often necessitate repeat radiographs or additional imaging procedures. For our prospective, case‐controlled, accuracy study, we hypothesized the following: (1) using computed tomography (CT), radiologists will be more sensitive and specific for detecting mechanical intestinal obstruction and recommending surgery compared to using radiographs; and (2) using measurements, radiologists will be more sensitive and specific using radiographs or CT for detecting mechanical intestinal obstruction and recommending surgery. Twenty dogs had abdominal radiographs and abdominal CT. Seventeen dogs had abdominal surgery and three dogs were not obstructed based on clinical follow‐up. Confidence levels (five‐point scale) of three experienced radiologists for mechanical intestinal obstruction and recommending surgery were recorded before and after making selected measurements. Eight dogs had surgically confirmed mechanical intestinal obstruction, and 12 dogs did not have obstruction. For detecting mechanical intestinal obstruction, CT was more sensitive (95.8% vs. 79.2%) and specific (80.6% vs. 69.4%) compared to radiographs, but the difference was not statistically significant. For recommending surgery, radiography was more sensitive (91.7% vs. 83.3%) and specific (83.3% vs. 72.2%) than using CT, but differences were not statistically significant. We reported objective CT measurements for predicting small mechanical intestinal obstruction. By incorporating these objective data, the diagnosis of mechanical intestinal obstruction changed in five of 120 instances (radiographs and CT). In no instance (0/120), did the objective data change the recommendation for surgery. Using CT or abdominal radiographs for the detection of canine mechanical intestinal obstruction is sensitive and specific when evaluated by experienced veterinary radiologists. 相似文献

Dose confirmation studies of the cestocidal activity of pyrantel pamoate paste were conducted at two sites in North America during 2001. Horses with naturally-acquired cestode infections were identified by detection of typical Anoplocephala spp. eggs in feces collected between 7 and 92 days prior to treatment. Twenty and 22 horses were enrolled at Site 1 (Urbana, IL) and Site 2 (Knoxville, TN), respectively. Candidate horses were acclimated to study conditions for 14 days, ranked by length of interval since coprologic confirmation, and allocated randomly to one of two treatment groups: (T1) pyrantel pamoate paste 13.2mg pyrantel base per kilogram body weight administered orally, and (T2) untreated controls. Individual doses of pyrantel pamoate paste were prepared on the basis of contemporaneous body weights and administered to Group T1 horses on Day 0. Trained personnel monitored the animals at regular intervals after treatment to detect potential adverse reactions. Horses were euthanatized and necropsied 10-12 days after treatment. The contents of the large and small intestines were collected, and the walls of each organ were rinsed with water and inspected. Attached cestodes were recovered and preserved in 10% formalin. The intestinal contents and rinsed ingesta were washed over a #10-mesh (2mm aperture) sieve and tapeworms were extracted and preserved. Recovered cestodes were counted and examined at 1-4x magnification for identification to genus and species. At Site 1, specimens of Anoplocephala perfoliata were recovered from seven of 10 control horses, and from one of 10 horses treated with pyrantel pamoate. Mean cestode numbers were 4.52 in the control group and 0.07 for treated horses. At Site 2, cestodes were found in 10 of 11 controls (mean 26.2) and in five of 11 horses (mean 1.2) treated with pyrantel pamoate. In both studies, Group T1 means were significantly lower than the control group (P<0.005). The calculated efficacies were 98.4 and 95.5% at Sites 1 and 2, respectively. In two dose-confirmation studies, a single, oral treatment of pyrantel pamoate paste (19.13% w/w pyrantel base) at 13.2mg/kg was >or=95.5% effective against A. perfoliata in naturally-infected horses. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the dimensions and volume of thyroid tissue in clinically normal cats by use of computed tomography. ANIMALS: 8 cats. PROCEDURE: Helical computed tomography images (2-mm collimation) were acquired from the cranial aspect of the second cervical vertebra through the caudal aspect of the fourth cervical vertebra. Data were acquired before contrast medium administration (n = 7 cats) and immediately after contrast medium enhancement (1 cat). Length, width, and height measurements of each thyroid lobe were made by use of transverse, dorsal, and sagittal plane images. Thyroid lobe volume was estimated by use of 3 methods. RESULTS: All thyroid lobes were histologically normal. Mean dimensions for a thyroid lobe were 16.5 x 2.00 x 4.31 mm (length x width x height) using only data from transverse images. Mean thyroid lobar volume was 113.75 mm(3) using the sum of areas method. Mean total volume of thyroid tissue was 215.25 mm(3) using the sum of areas method. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results may be useful for computed tomography evaluation of abnormal thyroid glands in cats, which warrants investigation. 相似文献

A dog with severe cholestasis secondary to chronic hepatitis was treated with ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA1 PO. After 2 weeks of daily treatment, the dog was more active and had an improved appetite. Monthly serum biochemical determinations and analysis of individual bile acid profiles documented improvement in hepatobiliary tests and a marked reduction in the concentrations of potentially hepatotoxic endogenous bile acids. These effects were maintained for approximately 6 months- The findings in this dog are similar to those reported for human patients treated with UDCA and provide preliminary evidence in support of its continued evaluation in the treatment of cholestatic liver disease in the dog. 相似文献

Fibroblast cultures of a skin biopsy from an adult intact male Siberian tiger (Panthera tigris altaica) revealed an abnormal standard and G-banded karyotype diploid chromosome number of 2n = 39 XXY due to an extra sex chromosome as opposed to the expected 2n = 38 XY. The tiger was euthanatized 1 yr later due to acute multifocal intervertebral disc disease. Histopathology of the reproductive tract demonstrated a paucity of seminiferous tubules and these were devoid of spermatagonia. An increase in fibrous connective tissue was noted in sections of the prostate and epididymis, and expansion of the fibrous interstitium was observed in the testes. 相似文献
