1. As a baseline study of the nature and incidence of keel deformities in laying hens, keel condition was examined in three different strains of hen from a total of 4 different caged environments (two commercial farms and two experimental farms). Incidence of keel deformity on farms in end of lay hens ranged from 2.6 to 16.7%. Only 0.8% of younger 15-week-old pullets had deformed keels. 2. Incidence of keel deformities was unchanged in 100 birds sampled from a free-range system compared to conventional caged siblings at the same farm. 3. Keel condition was also examined in 5 selected generations of a study involving the use of a body-weight-restricted selection index for skeletal improvement. Divergent selection for skeletal characteristics decreased incidence of keel deformity and improved radiographic density (RD) in high bone index (BI) hens compared to low BI hens in all selected generations. Male high BI keels were also improved compared to low BI. Shear strength measured in normal keels in generation 6 (G6) of the genetic study was improved in high BI hens compared to low BI hens. For all hens in the genetic study, those with normal keels had stronger tibiotarsus and humerus breaking strengths than hens with deformed keels. 4. Histopathology of keels representative of different deformities showed the presence of fracture callus material and new bone in all cases. This establishes that deformities are a result of trauma and are not developmental in origin. 5. Ash contents of keels, tibiae and humeri showed no differences between hens with normal and deformed keels. There were no differences in indicators of collagen cross-linkage in other bones between hens with normal keels and those with deformed keels. 6. It is concluded that lack of bone mass is the underlying cause of keel fracture and deformity in laying hens, rather than qualitative changes in bone, and that genetic selection can improve keel quality and prevent deformity.  相似文献

1. Riboflavin‐deficient practical and semi‐purified diets were fed to broiler breeder hens.

2. Yolk and albumen riboflavin concentrations were depressed by the deficient diets and cases of curled toes were seen in the chicks.

3. The few instances of defective down did not resemble cases seen in field outbreaks of a condition involving depressed hatchability and a defective down syndrome.

4. It is concluded from observations in this experiment and in the field outbreaks that there is a condition in breeding chickens causing depressed hatchability and defective down that is not attributable to riboflavin deficiency.  相似文献

1. The relationships between plasma very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) plus low density lipoprotein (LDL) triglyceride concentrations at 3 and 7 weeks of age and body fat content at 7 weeks were studied in male and female broiler grandparent stock fed on diets containing about 25 or 90 g fat/kg.

2. Plasma VLDL plus LDL triglyceride concentrations were similar in males and females and only slightly higher in birds fed on the high‐fat diet. Concentrations at 3 weeks were similar to those at 7 weeks.

3. Body fat content was correlated more closely with plasma VLDL plus LDL triglyceride measured at 7 weeks than at 3 weeks.

4. Phenotypic correlations between body fat content and plasma VLDL plus LDL triglyceride concentrations at 7 weeks were 0.47 and 0.43 for males and females respectively fed on the high‐fat diet and 0.70 and 0.60 for males and females fed on the low‐fat diet.

5. Phenotypic correlations between body fat content and measurements with an abdominal caliper were 0.35 and 0.49 in birds fed on the high‐ and low‐fat diets respectively.

6. A possible procedure for selecting for leanness in broiler breeding programmes on the basis of measurements of plasma VLDL plus LDL triglycerides is discussed.  相似文献

A review of the literature concerning the effect of oestrogens for treating mismating in bitches on the occurrence of pyometra indicated that low doses of oestradiol benzoate substantially increase the incidence of pyometra. A retrospective study of the clinical records of a UK general practice found that the incidence of pyometra in the four months after administration of low doses of oestradiol benzoate was 8.7 per cent, whereas the incidence in the practice's untreated at-risk population was estimated to be less than 1.32 per cent per interoestrus interval, suggesting that more than 85 per cent of pyometras occurring within four months of treatment are iatrogenic.  相似文献

1. Feeding a diet supplemented with maize oil was found to elevate plasma oestradiol concentration in laying hens.

2. In a larger‐scale experiment, isoenergetic and isonitrogenous diets containing 10, 20, 40 or 60 g/kg supplemental maize oil, tallow, coconut oil or fish oil were fed for 5 weeks.

3. Egg weights showed very different responses to the different fats. The responses could be described by quadratic functions that all gave optimum responses with supplemental dietary fat concentrations of about 40 g/kg. Egg weight increased the most with maize oil and was decreased with fish oil at the highest inclusion rate.

4. Measurements of egg components showed a relatively larger increase in albumen weights with maize oil than with other fats.

5. Across treatments, mean plasma oestradiol concentrations were very highly correlated (r = 0.96) with the changes in egg weights over the experimental period.

6. It is concluded that oestrogen is important in controlling egg weight and that the effect of dietary fats in influencing egg weight is mediated by an effect of the fats on oestrogen metabolism.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Water-soluble polymers are increasingly added to herbicide and pesticide formulations at very low concentrations (100-1000 mg L(-1)) in order to control the spray characteristics, notably to reduce spray drift and influence droplet bounce. The incorporation of polymeric adjuvants improves the efficacy of the spray solutions, thus enabling crop growers to maximise the performance of agrochemical sprays at lower dose rates of active ingredient. It is important to establish a fundamental understanding of how polymers influence the processes involved in droplet deposition.RESULTS: The shear and extensional viscosities of a series of high molecular mass (M(w)) poly(acrylamides) (M(w) approximately 10(6)-10(7)) have been determined at very low concentrations (100-1000 mg L(-1)). The polymer solutions demonstrated typical shear thinning characteristics under shear, and strain hardening behaviour under extension above a critical strain rate. The presence of the polymers was shown to increase the size of droplets produced in atomisation using an agricultural spray nozzle, as measured by laser diffraction. This was attributed to the increase in the extensional viscosity at the strain rates generated under pressure in the spray nozzle and was a function of both polymer concentration and M(w). In addition, the presence of polymer was found to have a significant influence on droplet bounce.CONCLUSIONS: The presence of very low concentrations of high molecular mass poly(acrylamides) significantly influences the size of droplets formed on atomisation and subsequent bounce characteristics. Large extensional viscosities generated above a critical strain rate are responsible for both processes.  相似文献

1. A breeding programme based on the assessment of the body fat content of broilers by measurement of plasma very low density lipoprotein concentration has resulted in 2 lines with significantly different body fat contents. 2. Energy and nitrogen intake and retention were measured in 63- to 70-d-old females from each line during 5-d periods of indirect chamber calorimetry. Results obtained by this technique were compared with results from a previously published growth trial incorporating carcase analysis at 49 d. 3. Body weight, metabolisable energy intake, heat production, energy retention and efficiency of energy retention did not differ significantly between the fat and lean lines. 4. The proportion of energy retained as crude protein and the efficiency of crude protein retention were significantly greater in the lean line. 5. In terms of whole-body energy and nitrogen exchanges, the essential difference between the lines was therefore in the partition of the same quantity of retained energy between fat and protein deposition. 6. The results were consistent with a higher rate of breakdown of amino acids in the fat line; because heat production did not also increase, a greater proportion of retained energy therefore became available for storage as fat.  相似文献

Feeding lindane, in capsule form, to laying hens at a rate equivalent to 100 mg/kg food for 1 or 2 weeks had little effect on egg production. Longer periods of feeding resulted in a 20 to 30% decrease in the rate of egg production. When treatment was stopped after 4 weeks, the birds recovered and egg production returned to its original rate within a month. The production of flocks treated for 6 weeks or longer became permanently depressed since some birds went out of lay and failed to resume production when the treatment was terminated. Egg shell thickness, egg and yolk weight and hatchability were not significantly affected by the treatment.  相似文献

Broiler chickens were fed on diets containing 0.1 to 0.5% sodium from 0 to 8 weeks. During the 0‐ to 4‐week period the best combined growth rate and efficiency of food conversion was obtained when the diet contained 0.2% sodium; for the period 0 to 8 weeks 0.2 and 0.3% were equally good.
