Prairies exhibit a bimodal frequency distribution of patch occupancy with a few dominant species accounting for most of the primary production and plant biomass and numerous other species occurring infrequently over time and space. Consequently, management interest is often focused on the abundance of common species, and on the persistence of less common species. We used spatially nested arrays of various sized plots to simultaneously measure species’ persistence and abundance at Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve, Kansas. Larger plots captured more species, with 127 species identified at the 10-m scale. Smaller plots, however, provided useful frequency data for measuring the abundance of common species. We defined a plot frame size that delivers a frequency in a 20–50% target range as the optimal plot size, and the frequency of a species sampled at its optimal plot size is termed the optimized frequency. Optimized frequency was estimated for 27 common species for the years 2002–2006. Of the nine perennial grasses in this group, five exhibited significant interannual variation within the 5-yr period. Bouteloua curtipendula exhibited a significant linear change over the 5-yr period, decreasing in frequency over time. From year to year, changes in optimized frequency among the 27 common species varied in both their trajectory (i.e., the average change), and amplitude (i.e., the average magnitude of change). Between 2005 and 2006, the average change in optimized frequency was -9.1%, the only year with an overall declining trajectory. The declining trajectory between 2005 and 2006 was significantly different from the increasing trajectories observed between 2002 and 2003 and between 2004 and 2005. No significant differences were observed in amplitude. We offer these techniques for aggregating information from multiple spatial scales to characterize the amplitude and trajectory of community-wide changes as tools to help scientists convey the results of multiscale research projects to land managers.  相似文献

A miniature poodle was presented with a history of a chronic, insidious hind limb lameness. As part of the clinical approach to the case, a serum electrophoresis was done which revealed a polyclonal hypergammaglobulinemia. Analysis of stife and carpal joint fluid revealed an elevated white cell count, that consisted of about 75% neutrophils and 25% monocytes. The joint fluid was sterile on bacteriological culture. Radiographs of the carpal joints indicated some narrowing of joint spaces and subchondral lucencies. Rheumatoid factor was identified on serological testing. Histopathology of carpal joint biopsies indicated a nonsuppurative synovitis. These findings are consistent with a diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis. The dog was treated with prednisone on a long term basis. Response to treatment has been good.  相似文献

A case of otitis media and interna in a domestic cat is described in which granulation tissue extended into the external ear canal. An unusual histological feature was the presence of mucous glands within the granulation tissue. SUMMARY Portal vein anomaly and associated hepatic encephalopathy was diagnosed in three dogs; a 2-year-old Old English Sheep Dog, a 14-week-old Old English Sheep Dog and a 20-week-old Corgi. The common clinical changes were anorexia, vomiting, depression, weakness and ataxia. The major laboratory findings were an elevated serum alanine amino transferase activity, hypoproteinaemia, hypoalbuminaemia, prolonged retention of sulphobromophthalein, fasting and postprandial hypeoammonaemia and ammonium biurate crystalluria. Angiographic studies demonstrated the presence of a patent ductus venosus in each case. The 2 Old English Sheep Dogs were destroyed at the owners' request and the necropsy findings in each case verified the presence of a portacaval shunt and hepatic encephalopathy. The Corgi is still alive, with conservative medical management, 28 months after the onset of signs. The dog is stunted and has mild, intermittent neurological disturbances. Clinical biochemistry indicates severe hepatic insufficiency and suggests a poor long term prognosis.  相似文献

Xylazine administered subcutaneously (s.c.; 1–4 mg/kg) or intravenously (i.v.; 0.5-2 mg/kg) to cats consistently caused dose-related decreases in body temperature which were maximal 3–4 h after injection and lasted for at least 12 h. Otherwise the animals appeared to have recovered fully from the central nervous system effects of the drug within 1.5–3.5 h. Xylazine-induced hypothermia developed more rapidly in cats placed in a 4°C environment and, in contrast, was replaced by a hyperthermic response in cats placed in a 32°C environment. These changes in body temperature were not opposed by compensatory thermoregulatory effector activity such as shivering or tachypnea. This pattern of responses at varied environmental temperatures is indicative of a general depression of the thermo-regulation. Thus, animals given xylazine should not be exposed to extreme heat or cold for several hours to avoid development of hyper- or hypothermia.  相似文献

Ergocryptine is an ergot alkaloid that affects dopaminergic activity principally by interacting with D2-type receptors. In this study the ability of ergocryptine and several other ergot alkaloids to release [3H]dopamine from isolated nerve endings was demonstrated using in vitro superfusion of rat striatal synaptosomes. Ergocryptine, ergocristine, and bromocryptine produced an elevation in baseline dopamine release of approximately 400% with effective concentrations (EC50) of approximately 30 microM. Ergotamine, ergonovine, ergovaline, and ergocornine were devoid of activity. The time-course of the ergocryptine-stimulated release was relatively slow compared with amphetamine, nicotine, or K+-stimulated [3H]dopamine release; the maximal increase in release required a 5-min treatment. A number of receptor antagonists were examined for their ability to block ergocryptine-stimulated release. Of the dopaminergic, adrenergic, serotonergic, GABA-ergic, and cholinergic antagonists examined, only phentolamine produced a moderate attenuation in evoked release. Omission of Ca++ from the medium did not affect ergocryptine-evoked release. Following ergocryptine treatment, the synaptosomes were fully responsive to other stimulant. The results indicate that, in addition to interacting with dopamine receptors, several ergot alkaloids may produce dopaminergic effects by increasing the release of dopamine from central nerve endings. Several mechanisms to account for the evoked neurotransmitter release are discussed.  相似文献
