Pancreatitis can be induced in dogs by intravenous infusion of supraphysiologic doses of synthetic cholecystokinin octapeptide (CCK-8). Eight anesthetized female beagles were given either CCK-8 or saline in a randomized, blinded fashion and had abdominal ultrasonography to study the development of pancreatic lesions. Pancreatic lesions were apparent 2 hours after the start of CCK-8 infusion and included swelling, interlobular and subcapsular fluid accumulation and patchy hypoechogenicity of the gland parenchyma. CCK-8 had a variable effect on gallbladder emptying. No signs of biliary obstruction or duodenal lesions were identified. Dogs given CCK-8 had severe edematous pancreatitis at necropsy six hours after the start of the infusion. Compared to the oleic acid model of pancreatitis, CCK-8 infusion induces a rapid onset of pancreatitis and an ultrasonographic appearance that reflects diffuse edema of the gland. The short time-scale of the experiment may account for the relative absence of secondary lesions affecting the biliary tract or duodenum compared to the naturally-occurring disease. 相似文献
Excision of perianal fistulas using a 1.064 micron wavelength neodymium:yttrium aluminum garnet (ND:YAG) contact tipped laser with primary wound closure was used to treat 20 dogs with perianal fistulas. Overall, 19 of 20 (95%) dogs had resolution of fistulas after one or more ND:YAG treatments. The period of resolution ranged from 10 to 42 months with a mean of 22.9 months. Sixteen of 20 (80%) dogs had resolved fistulas after one laser excision. Three of the four recurrences underwent additional laser treatments with successful results. The total number of laser procedures ranged from one to three with a mean of 1.2 procedures. Postoperatively, anal tone as judged by digital rectal examination was reduced in about 60% of the cases, but clinical evidence of fecal incontinence only occurred in four of 20 cases. This was managed effectively with diet modification. The tendency toward loss of anal tone or fecal incontinence depended on the severity of preexisting anal stenosis. On a client survey, 19 of 20 owners believed that their animals experienced less pain during defecation after surgery and rated the results as excellent or good. The overall success rate using ND:YAG laser excision compared very favorably with previously reported studies of other methods of treatment for perianal fistulas in dogs. 相似文献
We studied effects of protein intake at two protein-free energy intake levels on plasma glucose and insulin concentrations, urinary glucose excretion and on liver and intestinal fat content in milk-fed veal calves. Two experiments were performed at body weights (BW) of 80-160 kg (mean 120 kg; Exp. 1) and 160-240 kg (mean 200 kg; Exp. 2). In each experiment, 36 calves were allocated to one of six protein intake levels, at each of two energy intake levels. Digestible protein intakes ranged between 0.90 and 2.72 g nitrogen (N)/(kg BW(0.75) x d) in Exp. 1 and between 0.54 and 2.22 g N/(kg BW(0.75)x d) in Exp. 2. The two energy intake levels were kept constant on a protein-free basis and were 663 and 851 kJ/(kg BW(0.75) x d) in Exp. 1 and 564 and 752 kJ/(kg BW(0.75)x d) in Exp. 2. Blood samples were taken between 5 and 6h post-feeding at 14-d intervals until calves reached target BW, and liver fat mass was determined at slaughter. Urinary glucose excretion was quantified at 120 and 200 kg BW in Exps. 1 and 2, respectively. Increased protein-free energy intake increased plasma glucose concentrations and urinary glucose losses in 200 kg calves, but not in 120 kg calves. Increasing protein intake decreased plasma glucose, urinary glucose and plasma insulin in both experiments. Liver fat content decreased with increasing protein intake. In conclusion, long-term low-dietary protein intake increased hyperglycemia, hyperinsulinemia, glucosuria and hepatic steatosis in heavy milk-fed calves, likely associated with increased insulin resistance. 相似文献
Corynebacterium renale strain 10849 was grown in a chemically defined medium containing glucosamine, ammonium sulfate, and 5 amino acids as possible nitrogen sources. Although glucosamine was slightly stimulatory, its omission from the medium had a minimal effect on growth, and washed cells introduced into glucosamine-free medium grew readily through 10 serial transfers, demonstrating that this compound was not required for growth. Individual omissions of isoleucine, valine, methionine, and glutamine resulted in lengthened lag periods and reduced growth rates in initial transfers, but recovery occurred in subsequent serial transfers so that by the 3rd or 4th transfer, growth rates and cell crops were only slightly less than in control cultures in complete medium. Omission of cystine resulted in a permanently low growth rate and reduced cell crop, but this was remedied by substituting various nonnitrogenous compounds containing reduced sulfur. Strain 10849 and 6 additional strains were then serially cultured in a minimal defined medium in which sodium thioglycolate provided reduced sulfur and ammonium sulfate served as sole nitrogen source. Since only ammonium ion was required as the nitrogen source, it could be concluded that C renale, which rapidly hydrolyzes urea, should find an adequate source of nitrogen for growth in the urinary tract of animals. 相似文献
The safety of open thorax defibrillation with single damped sine-wave shocks and 6-cm-diameter electrodes was evaluated in healthy anesthetized dogs. Twenty-one dogs were allotted to 6 groups: Group A were nonshocked controls and groups B through F were given single shocks of 4-, 7-, 12-, 19-, or 32-fold, respectively, greater than a defibrillation threshold dose (30 mA/g of heart). Immediate postshock death resulted in group F dogs; group A through E dogs survived and were killed after 2 days. The incidence and severity of cardiac morphologic damage increased with shock strength (mild damage occurred in 1 of 3 dogs in group C and in 3 of 4 dogs in group D and severe damage occurred in 2 of 3 dogs in group E). The cardiac lesions were characterized grossly and microscopically. In dogs that died immediately after shocking, damage was apparent as pale circular zones of edema and myofibrillar degeneration in the ventricular free walls beneath the electrode placement sites on the cardiac surface. In the dogs that survived 2 days, the defibrillator-induced areas of myocardial necrosis and calcification were concentrated in arc or ringlike patterns beneath the periphery of the electrode placement sites. All dogs that were studied 2 days after shocking had mild fibrinous pericarditis. Postshock electrocardiographic changes were not good indicators of cardiac damage because the mild epicardial inflammatory reaction associated with the surgical procedure produced large ST and T wave changes which masked any changes associated with myocardial necrosis induced by the electric shocks. It was concluded that a substantial safety margin exists between the required defibrillation threshold shock dose and the large shocks required to produce marked cardiac damage or death in healthy dogs. 相似文献
A total of 25 “heat-clearing and detoxifying” herbs used in Chinese medicine were investigated for their cytopathic effects on the growth of Newcastle Disease virus (NDV) in a chicken fibroblast cell line.
The 5 herbs with the highest virus inhibitory effects were Herba agastaches, Flos chrysanthemi indici, Rhizoma anemarrhenae, Astragalus root and Baikal skullcap root and these were used in herbal formulations. Anti-NDV activities of 4 formulations were tested on the growth of NDV in the DF-1 fibroblast cell line.
Formulation II, containing Baikal skullcap root, Astragalus root, Anemarrhena rhizome (1:1:2) and formulation IV containing Anemarrhena rhizome, Astragalus root and Flos chrysanthemi indici (1:1:1), which had strong anti-NDV activity in vitro, were used to determine the in vivo inhibitory effects of NDV-infection in chickens. After treatment with the two formulations serum IgY titres against NDV were improved, and morbidity was reduced in the NDV-infected chickens.
The results suggest that the components in formulations II and IV acted synergistically to improve resistance to Newcastle disease and provide a basis for the developing an anti-NDV herbal medicine.
