Managing fisheries resources to maintain healthy ecosystems is one of the main goals of the ecosystem approach to fisheries (EAF). While a number of international treaties call for the implementation of EAF, there are still gaps in the underlying methodology. One aspect that has received substantial scientific attention recently is fisheries‐induced evolution (FIE). Increasing evidence indicates that intensive fishing has the potential to exert strong directional selection on life‐history traits, behaviour, physiology, and morphology of exploited fish. Of particular concern is that reversing evolutionary responses to fishing can be much more difficult than reversing demographic or phenotypically plastic responses. Furthermore, like climate change, multiple agents cause FIE, with effects accumulating over time. Consequently, FIE may alter the utility derived from fish stocks, which in turn can modify the monetary value living aquatic resources provide to society. Quantifying and predicting the evolutionary effects of fishing is therefore important for both ecological and economic reasons. An important reason this is not happening is the lack of an appropriate assessment framework. We therefore describe the evolutionary impact assessment (EvoIA) as a structured approach for assessing the evolutionary consequences of fishing and evaluating the predicted evolutionary outcomes of alternative management options. EvoIA can contribute to EAF by clarifying how evolution may alter stock properties and ecological relations, support the precautionary approach to fisheries management by addressing a previously overlooked source of uncertainty and risk, and thus contribute to sustainable fisheries.  相似文献

The term ‘Konservierende Bodenbearbeitung’ has a somewhat different meaning than conservation tillage as used worldwide. In Germany the term is used not only in relation to the retention of surface residues to reduce erosion but in association with compaction control by carefully timed loosening operations.Field experiments were conducted from 1985 to 1990 on a loamy sand (Dystric-Luvisol) in north-central Germany. The effect of crop rotation-specific soil loosening on some soil physical properties and crop yields was studied in the presence and absence of wheel-induced soil compaction when growing sugar beet, winter wheat, winter barley and a cover crop. Five tillage treatments were studied in a 3-year crop rotation: sugar beet; winter wheat; winter barley; cover crop. These included conventional mouldboard ploughing, conservation tillage with no loosening and conservation tillage where loosening was carried out with a wide blade chisel plough, (1) before winter barley, (2) before the cover crop (mustard or California bluebell) and (3) before winter barley and the cover crop.Wheel-induced compaction decreased the pore space and in most cases eliminated differences due to tillage practice. Pore space on the wheel-tracked plots of the conventional treatment was considerably lower than on the non-wheel-tracked plots. Similar results were obtained for the conservation tillage plots but only where loosening had been carried out within the last 18 months.In summary of the 6 years experiment, there was in general no evidence that conventional tillage was superior to conservation tillage with respect to the yields of sugar beet, winter wheat, or, within certain limits, winter barley on loamy sand.Accordingly, conservation tillage with crop rotation-specific non-inverting soil loosening, promises to be a potential strategy not only with regard to reducing soil erosion, but a programme for reducing costs and alleviating traffic-induced soil compaction.  相似文献

Subsoil compaction is a severe problem mainly because its effects have been found to be long-lasting and difficult to correct. It is better to avoid subsoil compaction than to rely on alleviating the compacted structure afterwards. Before recommendations to avoid subsoil compaction can be given, the key variables and processes involved in the machinery–subsoil system must be known and understood. Field traffic-induced subsoil compaction is discussed to determine the variables important to the prevention of the compaction capability of running gear. Likewise, technical choices to minimise the risk of subsoil compaction are reviewed. According to analytical solutions and experimental results the stress in the soil under a loaded wheel decreases with depth. The risk of subsoil compaction is high when the exerted stresses are higher than the bearing capacity of the subsoil. Soil wetness decreases the bearing capacity of soil. The most serious sources of subsoil compaction are ploughing in the furrow and heavy wheel loads applied at high pressure in soft conditions. To prevent (sub)soil compaction, the machines and equipment used on the field in critical conditions should be adjusted to actual strength of the subsoil by controlling wheel/track loads and using low tyre inflation pressures. Recommendations based on quantitative guidelines for machine/soil interactions should be available for different wheel load/ground pressure combinations and soil conditions.  相似文献

The objective of the study was to investigate the influence of the growth stimulators Ralgro zeranol and Rumensin on changes in concentrations of certain hormones in the blood of beef bulls. In the first experiment 21 bulls were investigated which were divided into three groups. The first group was control, the second was administered the Ralgro stimulator (3X) and the third the Ralgro and Rumensin stimulators. In the second experiment there were 12 bulls. The animals in the test group were implanted Ralgro five times during the fattening period. Alternate changes, mostly insignificant, were recorded between the groups in the concentration of triiodothyronine and cyclic adenosine phosphate. Thyroxine concentrations were reduced during all investigations of the first and second experiments in the animals stimulated by the Ralgro preparation. A significant increase was recorded in the bulls at the age of 14.3 months in the second experiment (62.8 nmol.l-1, in comparison with 56.9 nmol.l-1). In both experiments an identical trend of insulin content was observed--in seven out of the total number of eight observations the animals treated with the Ralgro preparation had statistically insignificantly higher values. The largest differences were recorded at the age of 11.1 and 14.3 months in the second experiment (3.9 microIU.ml-1 and 3.6 microIU.ml-1). Significant differences were observed in testosterone concentrations in the second bulls of the test group were lower by 1.9+ nmol.l-1 and 3.4++ nmol.l-1, respectively.  相似文献

Pulmonic valve rupture was determined to be the cause of severe right-sided heart failure in a 20-year-old Thoroughbred gelding. A flail in the intermediate pulmonic valve cusp was detected by 2-dimensional echocardiography. Significant pulmonic and tricuspid valvular regurgitation were confirmed by Doppler echocardiography. Despite treatment, the horse's condition deteriorated, and euthanasia was performed. At necropsy, a tear in the pulmonary artery extending into the right valve cusp and a tear at the base of the intermediate valve cusp were identified at the junction of the right and intermediate pulmonic valve cusps. Careful echocardiographic evaluation of the pulmonic valve is warranted for horses with right-sided heart failure, for which more common causes cannot be found.  相似文献
