A number of field trials on rice productivity have demonstrated very high yield, but reported limited information on environmental factors. The objective of this study was to reveal the environmental factors associated with high rice productivity in the subtropical environment of Yunnan, China. We conducted cross-locational field experiments using widely different rice varieties in Yunnan and in temperate environments of Kyoto, Japan in 2002 and 2003. The average daily radiation throughout the growing season was greater at Yunnan (17.1 MJ m−2 day−1 average over 2 years) relative to Kyoto (13.2 MJ m−2 day−1). The average daily temperature throughout the growing season was 24.7 °C at Yunnan, and 23.8 °C at Kyoto. The highest yield (16.5 tonnes ha−1) was achieved by the F1 variety Liangyoupeijiu at Yunnan in 2003, and average yield of all varieties was 33% and 39% higher at Yunnan relative to Kyoto in 2002 and 2003, respectively. There was a close correlation between grain yield and aboveground biomass at maturity, while there was little variation in the harvest index among environments. Large biomass accumulation was mainly caused by intense incident radiation at Yunnan, as there was little difference in crop radiation use efficiency (RUE) between locations. Large leaf area index (LAI) was also suggested to be an important factor. Average nitrogen (N) accumulation over 2 years was 49% higher at Yunnan than at Kyoto, and also contributed to the large biomass accumulation at Yunnan. The treatments of varied N application for Takanari revealed that the ratio of N accumulated at maturity to the amount of fertilized N was significantly higher at Yunnan than at Kyoto, even though there was no great difference in soil fertility. The Takanari plot with high N application showed a N saturation in plant growth at Kyoto, which might be related to low radiation and relatively high temperatures during the mid-growth stage. These results indicate that the high potential yield of irrigated rice in Yunnan is achieved mainly by intense incident solar radiation, which caused the large biomass and the N accumulation. The low nighttime temperature during the mid-growth stage was also suggested to be an important factor for large biomass accumulation and high grain yield at Yunnan. 相似文献

The system of rice intensification (SRI) developed in Madagascar in the 1980s has been promoted as an integrated crop and resource management approach to rice-cultivation, especially for resource-limited smallholder farms. While advocates have claimed that SRI could boost rice yields with less external input, many criticisms have challenged its effectiveness regarding yields and applicability to larger-scale rice farming systems. In this study, we conducted a field survey and on-farm experiments to assess rice yield performance and key management practices on a few of the early SRI-practicing smallholder farms in the central highland of Madagascar.Rice grain yields at the survey fields were 9.9 t ha−1 maximum without using mineral fertilizer. Deep plowing to the depth of 25–30 cm as well as SRI practices have been conducted continuously since the early 1990s. In addition, an effective drainage system facilitated intensive water management at these high-yielding fields. On-farm experiments demonstrated some yield increases with no interaction for the examined SRI practices, though the effects were not great enough to explain the high yields at these fields. The soils of these high-yielding fields contained relatively large amounts of soil organic carbon (SOC) from the surface to the deep soil layers, and the soil mineralizable nitrogen was closely correlated with rice grain yields.The results indicated that the high yields at the fields of those who were early to adopt SRI were mainly due to the soil fertility associated with great nitrogen-supplying ability, rather than ‘synergetic effects’ of the SRI components. This high N-supplying ability of the soil and accumulated SOC from surface to deep soil layers were attributable to the long-term combined practices of extensive organic applications and deep plowing. Soil hydrology could be another key factor stimulating high rates of soil N-mineralization.These management practices were, however, only applied to the limited numbers of fields within less than 1.0 ha of total landholdings of these farmers due to the great demand in labor and organic resources and the difficulty in controlling irrigation water. Intensive weeding and widely spaced transplanting of young seedlings were also performed in the fields with irrigation and drainage systems sufficient to avoid yield losses from flooding and drought. Although extensive and long-term systematic research is further required to fully assess the benefits of this sort of intensive management as opposed to conventional methods, the preferential allocation of intensive management by the successful SRI-adopters might be the implication of its location-specificity and difficulty in scaling up even within the resource-limited smallholder farms. 相似文献

Some forests in the Asian monsoon region are reported to transpire actively, even in the late dry season. The evergreen forest
in central Cambodia is included in them. The surface conductance was estimated for an evergreen forest in central Cambodia
in the late dry (May) and rainy (August) seasons, and the effects of environmental conditions on surface conductance were
compared between seasons. The effects of soil moisture did not differ between seasons, indicating that soil water drought
in the late dry season does not limit transpiration from the entire forest community. Evergreen forests in central Cambodia

To elucidate the water cycle in lowland forests of the Mekong River basin, our research group established four experimental
watersheds in the Stung Chinit River basin in Kampong Thom Province, Cambodia. The drainage areas of these experimental watersheds
ranged from small (4 km2) to mesoscale (3,659 km2). Here, we present the first preliminary results of our rainfall-discharge observations and analyses of temporal variations
of stable isotope ratios in rainfall, stream water, and groundwater. This paper focuses on the following three main topics:
annual rainfall, discharge, and water balance; stormflow generation and dominant flow pathways; and flow regimes and stream
water residence times. All stream water residence times (τ = 1.7–7.5 months) for the four experimental watersheds were shorter than the residence time of the groundwater (τ = 9.4 months) through the soil and regolith layers, implying that the stream waters consisted of not only the groundwater-flow
component, but also younger-aged flow components such as saturation-excess overland flow. The smallest (4 km2; O Toek Loork) watershed had longer residence time (τ = 7.5 months) than the three larger watersheds (126–3,659 km2; τ = 1.7–3.9 months). This may suggest differing contributions of the groundwater and younger-aged flow components in the stream
water in each watershed. Our approach of multi-scale watershed observation might better contribute to the needs of physically

To create high-quality eggs by using different breed and feed materials, we investigated free amino acid contents and taste sensor traits using two chicken breeds (Rhode Island Red; RIR and Australorp; AUS) fed two feeds (mixed and fermented feeds). Two-way ANOVA revealed significant breed and feed main and interaction effects on albumen bitterness and a significant interaction effect on yolk bitterness. Albumen from RIR fed mixed feed and AUS fed fermented feed was higher bitterness, whereas yolk from those groups was lower bitterness. Significant breed effects were detected in four albumen amino acid traits (His, Met, Ile, and Lys) and a yolk His, whereas significant feed effects were found in 15 albumen amino acid traits (Asp, Glu, Ser, His, Gly, Thr, Ala, Tyr, Val, Met, Trp, Ile, Leu, Lys, and Pro) and a yolk cystine trait. Compared to albumen amino acids, yolk amino acids had limited effects by breed and feed. The present results suggest that genetic and nutritional factors can alter not only amino acid contents but also sensor values of bitterness, indicating that selecting the combination of breed and feed enable us to make amino acids enriched and taste added designer eggs in future. 相似文献

The present study was conducted to clarify the effects of astaxanthin‐enriched yeast on the concentration of immunoglobulin A (IgA), the numbers of IgA antibody‐secreting cells (ASC) and the messenger RNA (mRNA) expression of IgA C‐region in the jejunum and ileum of weanling mice. Weanling mice were fed rodent feed or astaxanthin‐enriched yeast‐supplemented rodent feed for 7, 14 or 21 days. Supplemental astaxanthin‐enriched yeast increased the numbers of IgA ASC in the jejunum and ileum after 7, 14 and 21 days of treatment. Supplemental astaxanthin‐enriched yeast increased IgA concentrations in the jejunum after 21 days of treatment, but IgA concentrations in the ileum were not affected by the treatment. The mRNA expressions of IgA C‐region in the jejunum after 14 and 21 days of treatment and the ileum after 14 days of treatment were enhanced by supplementation of astaxanthin‐enriched yeast. These results indicate that supplementation of astaxanthin‐enriched yeast is effective to enhance the numbers of IgA ASC in the jejunum and ileum and IgA concentrations in the ileum of weanling mice. 相似文献

ABSTRACT Green stem disorder (GSD) in soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) negatively affects harvest efficiency and seed appearances. Breeding GSD-insensitive cultivars is expected to be an effective countermeasure to GSD. However, it is difficult to stably detect cultivar differences in GSD under conventional field conditions because the occurrences of GSD largely vary by location and year. The thinning effect, which had been reported to promote GSD, may help accurate phenotyping for occurrences of GSD in breeding. To verify this possibility, the thinning treatment was applied to four cultivars, the GSD severity values of which were evaluated in an independent study by another group. As a result, the cultivar differences in GSD severity were generally comparable between the present and previous studies. However, the difference was more evident, with the thinning treatment exhibiting the GSD score of 2.8 of ‘Hatsusayaka’ compared with the GSD score of 3.6 of ‘Sachiyutaka’, while the scores of those cultivars were similar without the thinning treatment. A positive correlation between GSD severity and N concentration in the main stem could be seen but the increasing rate of GSD score with the N concentration in the main stem differed between cultivars. Thus, although more cultivars need to be tested to prove, the thinning treatment could be useful as a phenotyping technique in the breeding of GSD-insensitive cultivars. 相似文献

N-nitrosobis(2-hydroxypropyl)amine (BHP) is a well-known carcinogen and induces tumors in various tissues. In the present paper, a case of olfactory neuroblastoma (ONB) induced in a rat by BHP is described. The tumor was observed in one out of 25 male rats that received 2000 ppm of BHP in drinking water from 6 to 18 weeks of age and were sacrificed at 26 weeks of age. Histologically, the tumor arose in the posterior nasal cavity and consisted of small round cells and elongate cells with scant basophilic cytoplasm. The neoplastic cells proliferated with compartmentalization into the lobules by fibrovascular septa. True rosettes, pseudorosettes and an intercellular fibrillar matrix were occasionally observed. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells were positive for NF120/200 and β III-tubulin. These results indicate that the present tumor is the first case of ONB induced in a rat by BHP treatment. 相似文献

Shortened fallows have resulted in declining upland rice yields in slash-and-burn upland rice systems in northern Laos. We
studied the benefit of planted legume fallows for rice productivity, weeds, and soil nitrogen and phosphorus availability.
Four systems were evaluated over a 5-year period: 1-year fallow with native species, 1-year Cajanus cajan fallow, 1-year Leucaena leucocephala fallow, and continuous annual rice cropping. Rice was grown either once each year as continuous annual cropping or in alternate
years of 2001, 2003, and 2005. C. cajan and L. leucocephala were sown with rice during the 2001 growing season. In subsequent years, L. leucocephala regenerated from root stock and did not have to be resown, whereas C. cajan was resown in 2003. Establishment of either C. cajan or L. leucocephala had no significant effect on rice yield in 2001, and rice yields ranged from 2.0 to 2.3 t/ha. Rice yields declined rapidly
in succeeding years, and rice yields in the four systems ranged from 0.7 to 1.1 t/ha in 2003 and from 0.3 to 0.5 t/ha in 2005.
Although two planted fallow systems increased nitrogen input because of greater biomass accumulation in 2003 and 2005 and
soil phosphorus availability was higher following L. leucocephala fallow in 2005, there were no significant differences in rice yields among the four systems in either year. Weed biomass
during the rice growing season increased each year in all systems and increased more rapidly for continuous annual rice cropping,
in which the dominant weed species was Ageratum conyzoides L. Among the other three systems, there were no significant differences in the weed biomass in 2003 and 2005. We conclude
that C. cajan and L. leucocephala as 1-year fallows do not offset the negative effects of increased cropping intensity on rice yield in this region. 相似文献
