Volatile insecticides, otherwise known as fumigants, have numerous uses in pest control and integrated pest management. Fumigants have been broadly applied in the protection of stored agricultural commodities and also in the elimination of structural pest infestations. However, fumigants have so far been mostly overlooked for use in management of public health pests such as flies and mosquitoes. This paper reports information on the development of a volatility bioassay for use in evaluating volatile insecticides against dipteran insects and on the use of this bioassay to compare the relative efficacy of 30 candidate compounds to Drosophila melanogaster Meig. The findings revealed seven highly effective insecticidal compounds, which include three heterobicyclics (menthofuran, thiophene and coumaran) and four formate esters [butyl, hexyl and heptyl formate and ethylene glycol diformate (EGDF)]. Ethyl formate, a compound previously identified as being a highly effective fumigant against coleopteran stored product pests, caused toxicity in Drosophila but was not as effective as other tested formates. Two volatile fumigant insecticides, dichlorvos (DDVP) and methyl isothiocyanate (MITC), were also tested as positive controls. Both of these volatile standards were significantly more toxic than the seven most effective of the novel compounds. Finally, regression analyses revealed that volatility is not entirely predictive of acute toxicity and that other structural features should be considered when designing and synthesizing volatile insecticidal compounds for future study. 相似文献

An increased susceptibility to disease in neonatal calves may be attributable to high glucocorticoid levels that influence immune reactions. We tested whether dexamethasone (DEXA) administration influences the proliferation, apoptosis, and number of B- and T-lymphocytes in Peyer's patches (PP) and thymus in calves fed colostrum (C) or a milk-derived formula. All calves were subcutaneously administered bovine colostrum-derived immunoglobulin G and fed chicken-egg derived immunoglobulins that protected against rotavirus and pathogenic Escherichia coli. The DEXA (30 microg/kg of BW daily) was injected for 4 d into groups fed colostrum on the first 3 d (CD+) and those fed the formula that contained nutrients in amounts as in colostrum but no immunoglubulin G (FD+). Groups CD- and FD were fed the same as the other two groups, but did not receive DEXA. Immunohistochemical methods were used to evaluate cell proliferation rates (by labeling of 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine), apoptosis rates (by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated X-dUTP nick end labeling). Numbers of T- and B-lymphocytes were determined with antibodies specific for CD3 and CD79 surface proteins. There were significant effects (P < 0.05) of DEXA treatment (decrease of cell proliferation rates in follicles of PP and thymus, increase of apoptotic rate in follicles of PP and thymus, decrease of B-lymphocyte numbers in follicles of PP, increase of B-lymphocyte numbers in domes of PP, increase of T-lymphocyte numbers in follicles of PP, and a decrease of intraepithelial T-lymphocyte numbers). There were significant effects (P < 0.05) of C feeding (decrease of cell proliferation rates in follicles of PP and of B-lymphocyte numbers in interfollicular areas, domes, and follicular-associated epithelium of PP, and an increase of cell proliferation rate in the thymus). A DEXA x feeding interaction (P < 0.001) was found for cell proliferation rate in the thymus. In conclusion, DEXA treatment decreased cell proliferation rates in follicles of PP and thymus and enhanced apoptotic rates in follicles of PP. Colostrum feeding decreased cell proliferation rates, likely of B-lymphocytes, in follicles of PP and numbers of B-lymphocytes in domes, follicular-associated epithelium, and interfollicular areas of PP and enhanced cell proliferation rates and selectively modified DEXA effects in the thymus. 相似文献

ABSTRACT Strawberry leaves (cv. Tristar) inoculated with Colletotrichum acuta-tum conidia were incubated at 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and 35 degrees C under continuous wetness, and at 25 degrees C under six intermittent wetness regimes. The number of conidia and appressoria was quantified on excised leaf disks. In order to assess pathogen survival, inoculated leaves were frozen and incubated to induce acervular development. Germination, secondary3 conidiation, and appressorial development were significantly (P = 0.05) affected by temperature and wetness treatments. Under continuous wetness, the optimum temperature range for conidial germination was 23.0 to 27.7 degrees C, whereas the optimum temperature for appressorial development ranged from 17.6 to 26.5 degrees C. Secondary conidiation showed an optimum temperature range of 21.3 to 32.7 degrees C and was most abundant between 12 and 36 h after inoculation. Conidial germination, appressorial production, and secondary conidiation were favored by increasing wetness duration and more than 4 h of wetness were required for secondary conidiation. In a greenhouse, C. acutatum survived up to 8 weeks on leaves. The number of acervuli formed on leaves after freezing and incubation was closely (r(2) >/= 0.95) related to appressorial populations prior to this treatment and was greatest following periods of continuous wetness. Production of secondary conidia and appressoria of C. acutatum on symptomless strawberry leaves under a range of environmental conditions suggests that these processes also occur under field conditions and contribute to inoculum availability during the growing season. 相似文献

Fasciolosis, caused by Fasciola gigantica, presents major disease and production problems, particularly in the rice producing areas of South and South-East Asia. In Nepal, buffaloes are commonly stall-fed and the most usual fodder is rice straw, which is produced in large quantities in the area. Here we describe a relatively simple way of controlling fasciolosis in these animals. We demonstrate that infectious metacercariae of F. gigantica are concentrated in the bottom part of the rice straw and that infection can be controlled by cutting the rice straw in half, and then feeding the parasite free top half of the straw first. The bottom part of the rice straw should ideally be stored for at least 4 months after harvest to allow the parasites to die before it is used as fodder. 相似文献

1. Based on records of all (n = 59 171 843) broiler chickens slaughtered over three years at one processing plant, the overall mortality of birds in transit was 0.126%. 2. There was a pronounced seasonal effect with increased mortality in the summer months, particularly June, July and August. Mortality increased when the maximum daily temperature (measured in the shade) rose above about 17 degrees C at the start of the summer. 3. Between 17.0 and 19.9 degrees C, mortality was 30% higher than at lower temperatures. Between 20.0 and 22.9 degrees C it increased 2.6-fold, and at temperatures of above 23 degrees C 6.6-fold. There was no evidence of birds dying from hypothermia at very low ambient temperatures (down to -1 degrees C). 4. Old breaks of the keel and furculum were identified by palpation in 500 end-of-lay hens from 10 flocks housed in free-range and barn systems, and the results were compared with the results obtained by a full dissection and inspection. The method was considered to be sufficiently precise to be used as a diagnostic tool although people using it would need to be trained. Coherent short-pulse laser excitation has been used to control the approximate energy and relative proximity of two valence electrons within the same alkaline-earth atom, thereby providing insight into the dynamical evolution of a three-body Coulomb system. Our time-domain experiments enable direct experimental study of the electron dynamics at the classical limit of a two-electron atom. As an example, we look at the mechanism of autoionization for one two-electron configuration class and find that the doubly excited atom decays through a single violent electron-electron collision rather than a gradual exchange of energy between the electrons. 相似文献

ABSTRACT Greasy spot, caused by Mycosphaerella citri, is a serious disease of citrus in the Caribbean basin. M. citri is a loculoascomycete and produces pseudothecia in decomposing leaves after intermittent wetting and drying. A new in vitro mating technique was developed for production of pseudothecia on sterilized leaf disks in petri dishes. Of the single-ascospore cultures that were recovered from individual asci, four were one mating type and four were a second mating type (tentatively designated mat+ and mat-), indicating that M. citri probably is heterothallic and bipolar like most other loculoascomycetes. Most populations of ascospores recovered from individual leaves or from leaves from groves of different citrus species and various locations had a 1:1 ratio of mating types consistent with random mating. Cytological studies demonstrated that the ontogeny of pseudothecial development was similar to other loculoascomycetes. The formation of mature pseudothecia required 30 to 45 cycles of wetting and drying of infected, dead leaves which required approximately 60 to 90 days. The in vitro system for pseudothecial production and the knowledge of the mating system in M. citri will facilitate genetic studies of this important pathogen. 相似文献

The impact of tick control on the productivity of indigenous cattle was investigated in three herds of East African shorthorn Zebu and Zebu×Ankole (Nganda) breeds, maintained under three tick management systems practised under ranch conditions: twice-a-week dipping, once-a-month dipping, and no tick control. The milk production and the growth rates of pre-weaned and post-weaned calves were monitored once a month over a period of 34 months. Milk offtake was 23% higher during the heavy rainy seasons than in the long dry seasons. Twice-a-week dipping increased the milk offtake by 21% in the second year of study and prolonged the duration of lactation in cows. Similarly, twice-a-week dipping increased the pre-weaning growth rate by 39% in the second year of study, but had no significant effect on the post-weaning growth rate. Generally, the growth rate of calves were greatest during the heavy rainy seasons and least during the long dry seasons. These results provide a basis for assessing the losses under different tick management systems in the various production systems. 相似文献
