Commercial tilapia production is dependent on monosex culture, commonly obtained through the inclusion of an androgen in the diet for a brief period soon after hatch. To determine a minimum effective dose and identify the problems associated with over‐dosing, Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus fry were fed diets containing methyltestosterone (MT) at rates up to 1200 mg kg?1 of diet for 28 days. The minimum effective dose for ≥95% males was 14 mg MT kg?1 diet. Percent phenotypic males increased as the rate increased from 3.75 (80%) to 30 mg kg?1 MT (99%). Methyltestosterone given at rates of 120 mg kg?1 or more reduced efficacy but did not result in a reduced frequency of males relative to that of non‐treated fish. The term ‘paradoxical feminization’ does not adequately describe the observed sex ratios, where no fish were feminized but the efficacy of MT at high doses to masculinize females was reduced. At 1200 mg MT kg?1, the frequency of females (48 ± 1%) was not different from that in the non‐treated population. The mechanism for the reduced efficacy is not clear and is not adequately explained as an aromatization of androgen to oestrogen response.  相似文献

Propanil-resistant barnyardgrass populations, previously verified in Arkansas rice fields and in greenhouse tests, were examined in the laboratory to ascertain if the resistance mechanism in this weed biotype was herbicide metabolism. Propanil-resistant barnyardgrass was controlled >95% in the greenhouse when carbaryl (an aryl acylamidase inhibitor) was applied two days prior to propanil. Laboratory studies with 14C-radiolabelled propanil indicated that the herbicide was hydrolysed in propanil-resistant barnyardgrass and rice to form 3,4-dichloroaniline, but no detectable hydrolysis occurred in susceptible barnyardgrass. Two additional polar metabolites were detected in propanil-resistant barnyardgrass and rice and tentatively identified by thin layer chromatography. Overall, metabolites in the resistant barnyardgrass had Rf values similar to those in rice, indicating similar metabolism for both species. These data, coupled with data from a previous report on the resistant biotype showing no differential absorption/translocation or molecular modification of the herbicide binding site in the resistant biotype, indicate that the resistance mechanism is metabolic degradation of propanil. © of SCI.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of extrusion processing on apparent digestibility coefficients (ADCs) of dry matter, crude protein, crude fat, energy and minerals in soya bean meal (SBM), barley, corn gluten meal and whole wheat, using rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss as the test species. In addition, availabilities of amino acids were also determined in SBM. Feed ingredients were preconditioned at 89–93 °C and then extruded using a Wenger X‐85 extruder. Nonextruded ingredients were used as is, meaning that they were not preconditioned. The extruded and nonextruded ingredients were mixed with a casein–gelatin reference diet at 3 : 7 ratio prior to determination of ADC values. A total of 135 trout (initial mean body weight 223.4 ± 12.7 g) were stocked into nine 140‐L fibreglass digestibility tanks with 15 fish per tank. Individual tanks were assigned randomly to each of eight diets made from the four ingredients (extruded and nonextruded) plus the reference diet. After faeces were collected in the first week, the diets were switched among tanks, and faeces were collected again after 5‐day acclimation period in the second week. Yttrium oxide was used as the inert marker. Results showed that extrusion processing significantly improved ADCs of dry matter, crude fat and gross energy, and reduced ADCs of crude protein, phosphorus, copper, iron and zinc. Results also showed that the effects of extrusion processing on chemical composition and ADCs of nutrients depended on the ingredients. It is recommended that trace minerals such as copper, iron and zinc be supplemented by an additional 10–20% when rainbow trout diets are extruded because of their reduced bioavailability in plant meal‐based feed ingredients.  相似文献

Diminishing sources of new pure water supplies, increasing demand for sport and commercial fishes, and developing governmental pollution abatement requirements in the U.S.A. led to a study by the authors' firm for a group of agencies. It was found that a properly designed water reconditioning-reuse system, under conditions set forth, can provide necessary pollution abatement and increase a hatchery's fish carrying capacity tenfold as compared to a single-pass system. Requirements for removal of ammonia, nitrite and solids are discussed.  相似文献

Predicting the performance of biofilters is an engineering challenge that is critical to both designers and managers. The task is complicated by the wide variety of water quality expectations and environmental conditions displayed by a recirculating aquaculture system (RAS). A myriad of biofilters designs have been generated reflecting approaches of engineers attempting to maximize specific surface area and oxygen transfer within the context of a biofilm management strategy. A rating strategy is presented for biofilters to facilitate the identification of appropriate matches between biofiltration formats and RAS applications. As a foundation, a previously proposed RAS classification system based upon salinity, temperature and trophic levels is upgraded to create 17 systems classifications. A biofilter classification system identifies seven combinations of trophic level and pH which should be sufficient to serve the RAS demands. Temperature and salinity are neglected as a means of simplifying the approach. An experimental methodology based upon chemical feeds is proposed to represent the steady-state RAS performance of the biofilters. Data is summarized by linear analysis of filter performance for concentration ranges below 1.0 g TAN m−3 and simple averaging is proposed for higher trophic levels. Input from the aquacultural engineering community and RAS aquaculturists is required to further refine the approach prior to endorsement.  相似文献

This study evaluated the efficiency of the drainage system during the larviculture of Lophiosilurus alexandri. Moreover, we assessed the best feeding rate after feed training for juvenile production. The study was performed in three phases over 87 days. In phase 1 (40 days), larvae were fed live food and posteriorly submitted to feed training in two drainage systems: water drained on the surface (DS), and water drained into a tank column (DI). In the second phase (30 days), using only the DS system juveniles were fed a formulated diet at feeding rates, 2, 4, 6 and 8% of body wet weight. In the third phase (17 days), the fish from the second phase were fed until apparent satiation. At the first phase, the animals in the DS system exhibited greater survival rates and growth. The best feeding rate for daily weight gain, specific growth rate (SGR) and mean body weights were similar: 5.57, 5.13 and 5.68% respectively. In the third phase, an increased SGR was observed in the treatment groups that received lower feeding rates in the second phase (2 and 4%), which could indicate a possible compensatory growth rate.  相似文献

Enhanced degradation of the fungicide vinclozolin was stimulated by multiple successive applications to a soil without any history of previous pesticide input. A vinclozolin-degrading bacterium isolated from this soil was identified as a strain of Pseudomonas putida. This organism metabolised vinclozolin as a source of carbon, but it would neither grow with nor transform any other closely related dicarboximide fungicides nor the degradation product, 3,5-DCA. The degradation of vinclozolin by cultures of P. putida St-1 was investigated under various culture conditions; biodegradation was optimal at 23°C, pH 6·5 and inoculum densities of 107 cells ml−1 but cultures would grow from as little as 100 cells ml−1. Amendments of the vinclozolin-degrading isolate to soil previously untreated with the fungicide caused rapid degradation of applied vinclozolin, whereas amendments of boiled cells, or viable cells grown in the absence of vinclozolin, produced no discernible effect on the rate of vinclozolin degradation.  相似文献

To quantify the efficacy and cost of different soya protein ingredients, heated soya beans (HSB) and underprocessed (SB) full‐fat soya beans (FFSB), soya protein concentrate (SPC) and trim waste from Pacific whiting (Merluccius productus) were incorporated into feeds for the cold water marine sablefish (Anoplopoma fimbria). Feed ingredients for this study were processed using an experimental heated ball mill with demonstrated potential as an affordable process for rural or small‐scale feed production. The three feed treatments were formulated with equal amounts of soya protein and Pacific whiting process trim. The three feed treatments contained 46% protein and 18% lipid as dry matter. Three 480‐L tanks of 10 fish were used to evaluate each of the three feed treatments. Fish were fed to satiation every 2 days for 8 weeks. Weight gain of the treatment groups ranged between 56% and 105% over the course of the study. Fish growth was significantly better among fish receiving the feeds containing HSB and SPC than a feed containing SB. At the conclusion of the study, histomorphologic evaluations of the distal intestines of final fish were conducted. Varying levels of inflammation were measured for all three treatments. Fisher's exact test showed a significant reduction in mononuclear cell infiltration among fish fed heat‐treated full‐fat soya beans vs those receiving underprocessed full‐fat soya beans. Fish receiving HSB feed had significantly lower intestinal inflammation than SB fish. Based on our results, cost savings of $ 0.253/kg were calculated for the HSB feed over the SPC feed.  相似文献
