Porcine rubulavirus (PoRV), also known as blue eye disease (BED) of swine, causes respiratory and reproductive problems in pigs at several developmental stages. To study the effect of PoRV infection on semen production, five boars were infected with 1 x 10(6) TCID(50)/ml of PoRV strain PAC-3 and evaluated for 59 days post inoculation (DPI). Infected boars developed reproductive tract pathology that included swelling of the testes and epididymides. Analysis of the semen showed that the infection had little effect on semen production in four animals, but semen from one boar showed severe alterations in sperm concentration, motility, and morphology. When motility was analyzed in BTS-diluted semen after 24, 48, or 72 h, alterations were detected in all boars. Furthermore, viral antigen was detected in semen, the seminal plasma fraction, or sperm fraction from all boars. These results showed that PoRV is excreted via semen and, therefore, artificial insemination is a potential route of dissemination. 相似文献

Randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers were used for the identification of two pigeonpea cytoplasmic genic male
sterile (CMS) lines derived from crosses between the wild (Cajanus scarabaeoides & C. sericeus) and the cultivated species of Cajanus cajan. The male sterile (A) line and its maintainer (B) line could be easily differentiated with certain random primers. The two
male sterile (288 A and 67 A)systems are based on C. scarabaeoidesand the other is based on C. sericeus could also be differentiated. Amplification product of 600bp amplified by primer OPC-11 was observed in both the cytoplasmic
male sterile lines (288 A and 67A), which was absent in the maintainer lines (288 B and 67 B) and the putative R-line (TRR
5 and TRR 6). CMS lines, putative R lines, other cultivars and wild species under the study could be easily distinguished
with the help of different primers. Dendrogram constructed based on the similarity index showed that considerable genetic
variation exist sbetween CMS lines, two putative R line and wild species studied.

Banana and plantain are among the most important food crops in developing countries but production is threatened by increasing
virulent forms of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense. Chemical control is not economically effective and,therefore, breeding programs are necessary. Traditional field studies
of new genotype resistance to this disease are time-consuming and destructive. Therefore,we developed a rapid and non-destructive
procedure to differentiate field-grown banana resistant from susceptible clones. This procedure implicates application of
culture filtrates of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense race 1 onto banana leaves. The relationship between duration of the fungal in vitro incubation, and the fungal culture fresh mass, the culture filtrate absorbency, and the Gross Michel (susceptible cultivar)leaf
lesion area (after application of the culture filtrate) were similar and at 24day-incubation the highest values of the recorded
indicators were observed. A comparison between Gross Michel and FHIA-01(resistant) was also performed. The most relevant differences
between cultivars were observed at 48 hours after application of the culture filtrate, and in the middle-aged leaves. The
position of the culture filtrate application in the leaf limb (distal, middle, proximal) was not determinant. A wider comparison
among banana cultivars confirmed previous results informed by other researchers using different systems to study this plant-fungus
interaction. Such a confirmation validates the effectiveness of the procedure described here to select rapid and non-destructively
banana resistance to this disease at field level.

Eighteen clones involving Erianthus, as one of the parents, were evaluated in a randomised block design under sub-tropical conditions of Karnal (Haryana, India).
Fifteen characters, which contribute towards stalk yield and juice-quality, were studied. The growth of these clones was monitored
during peak winter months of December and January. Significant variability existed among the clones for all the traits studied,
except for pol % in juice at 10-month crop age, indicating potentiality of the clones to select desirable types. Nine clones
showed significant increase in stalk length during winter months over the better standard Co 1148. Whereas 6 clones developed
more number of leaves than Co 1148. Both these characters showed high genetic variability, high heritability and hence, high
expected genetic gain. Path analysis revealed that these traits contributed about 16%, 5% and 4% to the total genetic variability
in juice quality traits (pol % and CCS %), stalk yield and CCS yield, respectively. Growth in winter months has resulted in
an increase in stalk yield and CCS yield. This may help in reducing the yield gap between tropical and sub-tropical regions.
Majority of clones showed resistance to red rot disease (major disease of sugarcane in sub-tropical region). Hence, hybridization
of Erianthus with sugarcane has resulted in introgression of genes for cold tolerance and red rot resistance. As Erianthus is known for its hardiness, resistance, of these clones, to other abiotic and biotic stresses is to be ascertained.

ABSTRACT In the international business literature location behavior has traditionally been analyzed using Dunning's (1977 ) OLI framework, which focuses on the nature, role, and behavior of multinational enterprise (MNE). In this paper it is argued that this approach is now no longer appropriate for discussing the spatial behavior of MNEs, because of the fundamental changes which have taken place either in MNE organization or in the global and institutional environment for foreign direct investment (FDI). At the same time, the paper argues that current location theory from regional economics and economic geography is also largely unsuitable for discussing these issues, such that the spatial behavior of the MNE provides a set of difficult challenges to location analysts. There appears to have been some response to these issues from the international business and management literature, most notably the Porter literature on clusters. However, it is also argued here that this literature provides few, if any, real answers to the problems set by the geographical behavior of the MNE. It is concluded that a fusion of traditional economic geography approaches with a focus on the information and organizational aspects of the firm and the region under consideration may be a way forward for both theory and empirical analysis. 相似文献

Plants collected in thirteen wild populations of Capsicum annuum from Northwest Mexico were tested for resistance to the pepper huasteco begomovirus (formerly subgroup III) (PHV) that is
transmitted by the white fly Bemisia tabaci Genadius. Plants were inoculated using both grafting and biolistic methods. Presence of viral DNA was detected by dot blot
hybridization and densitometry. Populations varied in their resistance to PHV. Plants of only two of the populations either
did not develop disease symptoms or showed very light symptoms after inoculation. In some cases, symptoms appeared several
days after inoculation. In plants of these populations viral DNA was detected by dot-blot hybridization assays but they appear
to be a good source of resistance (symptomless) for use in breeding programmes.

Improving the level and stability of grain yield is the primary objective of wheat breeding programs in the Eastern Gangetic
Plains (EGP) of South Asia. A regional wheat trial, the Eastern Gangetic Plains Yield Trial (EGPYT), was initiated by CIMMYT
in collaboration with national wheat research programs in Bangladesh, Nepal, and India in 1999–2000 to identify wheat genotypes
with high and stable grain yield, disease resistance, and superior agronomic traits for the EGP region. A set of 21 wheat
experimental genotypes selected from a regional wheat screening nursery in South Asia, three improved widely grown cultivars
(Kanchan, PBW343 and Bhrikuti), and one long-term cultivar (Sonalika) were tested at 9–11 sites in six wheat growing seasons
(2000–2005) in the EGP. The 21 experimental genotypes were different in each year, whereas the four check cultivars were common.
In each year, one or more of the experimental genotypes showed high and stable grain yield and acceptable maturity, plant
height, and disease resistance compared to the check cultivars. Three improved cultivars have already been commercially released
in the region through EGPYT and many germplasm lines have been used in the breeding programs as parents. Identification of
wheat genotypes with high-grain yield in individual sites and high and stable yield across the EGP region underlines their
value for regional wheat breeding programs attempting to improve grain yield and agronomic performance. 相似文献

Summary Esterase isozymes were studied in seed extracts of Cajanus cajan and six Atylosia species by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and isoelectrofocusing. The isozyme patterns were stable and accession specific. Within the accessions of the Atylosia species, A. albicans and A. scarabaeoides showed three common bands indicating that they are more closely related to each other than to the other species. Of the accessions of Atylosia only A. cajanifolia shares the esterase isozyme of C. cajan and hence seems to be the closest wild relative of C. cajan. 相似文献

Summary A preliminary evaluation for resistance to chili thrips, Scirtothrips dorsalis Hood of 41 and 194 pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) germplasms during 1987 and 1988, respectively, indicated chili accessions may be a promising source of resistance. In contrast, all sweet pepper accessions tested were highly susceptible. A number of chili accessions produced a moderate yield, in spite of a high thrips infestation indicating tolerance to S. dorsalis. Rating for thrips damage was more reliable and efficient than estimating thrips numbers in screening pepper accessions for resistance to thrips. Highly significant, positive correlation between ratings at the seedling stage and final rating for thrips damage indicated the feasibility of screening pepper accessions at the seedling stage. Comparing the similarities in rating among accessions resulted in 40 distinct groups. The variance-covariance matrix of the data from these 40 groups was subjected to principal component analysis. This accounted for 56 and 18 per cent of the variation across the two principal axes, respectively. Projection of chili and sweet pepper accessions along these two axes revealed three distinct clusters. About 80 per cent of chili accessions formed the first cluster, 58 per cent of the sweet pepper accessions formed the second cluster and a third cluster exhibited intermediate ratings for thrips damage. The significance of these findings in relation to geographical divergence and resistance to thrips among pepper accessions is discussed. 相似文献
