OBJECTIVE: To determine the durations of the local anesthetic effect and plasma procaine concentrations associated with 5- and 10-mg doses of procaine hydrochloride (with or without 100 microg of epinephrine) administered SC over the lateral palmar digital nerves of horses. ANIMALS: 6 healthy adult horses. PROCEDURES: The hoof withdrawal reflex latency (HWRL) period was determined by use of a focused heat lamp before and after administration of procaine with and without epinephrine. Blood samples were collected immediately before determination of each HWRL period to assess plasma concentrations of procaine via liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry-mass spectrometry (LC-MS-MS). RESULTS: 10 but not 5 mg of procaine alone and 5 and 10 mg of procaine administered with epinephrine significantly prolonged the HWRL period (mean durations of effect, 5, 120 and 180 minutes, respectively), compared with baseline values. Plasma procaine concentrations did not correlate well with local anesthetic activity; for example, although the HWRL was prolonged to the maximum permitted duration of 20 seconds at 60 to 180 minutes following administration of the 5-mg dose of procaine with epinephrine in certain horses, plasma procaine concentrations were less than the limit of quantitation of the LC-MS-MS assay. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Small doses of procaine coadministered with epinephrine provided long-lasting local analgesia and resulted in plasma procaine concentrations that were not always detectable via LC-MS-MS. On the basis of these results, the use of regulatory limits or thresholds for procaine concentration in equine plasma samples obtained after racing should be seriously reconsidered.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Adult dogs with degenerative myelopathy (DM) have progressive ataxia and paresis of the pelvic limbs, leading to paraplegia and euthanasia. Although most commonly reported in German Shepherd dogs, high disease prevalence exists in other breeds. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was the clinical and histopathologic characterization of familial degenerative myelopathy (FDM) in Pembroke Welsh Corgi (PWC) dogs. ANIMALS: Twenty-one PWCs were prospectively studied from initial diagnosis until euthanasia. METHODS: Neurologic examination, blood tests, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis, electrodiagnostic testing, and spinal imaging were performed. Concentrations of 8-iso-prostaglandin F2alpha (8-isoprostane) were measured in CSF. Routine histochemistry was used for neuropathology. Deoxyribonucleic acid and pedigrees were collected from 110 dogs. RESULTS: Median duration of clinical signs before euthanasia was 19 months. Median age at euthanasia was 13 years. All dogs were nonambulatory paraparetic or paraplegic, and 15 dogs had thoracic limb weakness at euthanasia. Electrodiagnostic testing and spinal imaging were consistent with noncompressive myelopathy. No significant difference was detected in 8-isoprostane concentrations between normal and FDM-affected dogs. Axonal and myelin degeneration of the spinal cord was most severe in the dorsal portion of the lateral funiculus. Pedigree analysis suggested a familial disease. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: Clinical progression of FDM in PWC dogs was similar to that observed in other breeds but characterized by a longer duration. Spinal cord pathology predominates as noninflammatory axonal degeneration. Oxidative stress injury associated with 8-isoprostane production is not involved in the pathogenesis of FDM-affected PWC dogs. A familial disease is suspected.  相似文献

BackgroundReduced pelvic limb reflexes in dogs with spinal cord injury typically suggests a lesion of the L4‐S3 spinal cord segments. However, pelvic limb reflexes might also be reduced in dogs with a T3‐L3 myelopathy and concurrent spinal shock.Hypothesis/ObjectivesWe hypothesized that statistical models could be used to identify clinical variables associated with spinal shock in dogs with spinal cord injuries.AnimalsCohort of 59 dogs with T3‐L3 myelopathies and spinal shock and 13 dogs with L4‐S3 myelopathies.MethodsData used for this study were prospectively entered by partner institutions into the International Canine Spinal Cord Injury observational registry between October 2016 and July 2019. Univariable logistic regression analyses were performed to assess the association between independent variables and the presence of spinal shock. Independent variables were selected for inclusion in a multivariable logistic regression model if they had a significant effect (P ≤ .1) on the odds of spinal shock in univariable logistic regression.ResultsThe final multivariable model included the natural log of weight (kg), the natural log of duration of clinical signs (hours), severity (paresis vs paraplegia), and pelvic limb tone (normal vs decreased/absent). The odds of spinal shock decreased with increasing weight (odds ratio [OR] = 0.28, P = .09; confidence interval [CI] 0.07‐1.2), increasing duration (OR = 0.44, P = .02; CI 0.21‐0.9), decreased pelvic limb tone (OR = 0.04, P = .003; CI 0.01‐0.36), and increased in the presence of paraplegia (OR = 7.87, P = .04; CI 1.1‐56.62).Conclusions and Clinical ImportanceA formula, as developed by the present study and after external validation, could be useful for assisting clinicians in determining the likelihood of spinal shock in various clinical scenarios and aid in diagnostic planning.  相似文献

  1. Accurately mapping the extent and status of biogenic reefs formed by polychaete worms of the genus Sabellaria is of conservation importance given their protected status across Europe.
  2. Traditionally, side‐scan sonar (SSS) combined with ground‐truthing in the form of seabed photography and videography has been widely accepted as the most suitable approach for mapping these reefs in the subtidal zone. In highly turbid environments visibility at the seabed can be near zero, however, rendering optical‐based ground‐truthing redundant. Consequently, the true distribution and status of Sabellaria reefs in some shallow subtidal areas around the UK remains unclear despite their designation as Annex‐I features of several Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) under the Habitats Directive.
  3. Acoustic camera imagery (ACI) collected using acoustic cameras in two deployment configurations matched well with the backscatter signatures of seabed features in corresponding SSS data. The ACI was of suitable resolution for visualizing Sabellaria colony structures, allowing for their Annex‐I ‘reef’ defining attributes (extent, patchiness, and elevation) to be assessed. Colony formation ‘type’ was also distinguishable in the ACI, although confidence in differentiating between low‐lying Sabellaria formations and surrounding substrates was low, particularly when using a pole‐mounted configuration.
  4. This study provides a proof of concept for using acoustic cameras as tools for ground‐truthing SSS interpretation and assessing the status of Sabellaria bioconstructions in low‐visibility environments. Further development of this approach and incorporating it into statutory monitoring programmes could improve the management of the reef habitats in subtidal areas of the Severn Estuary and other highly turbid environments.

Progressive myelomalacia (PMM) is a fatal sequela of acute thoracolumbar intervertebral disc extrusion in dogs, with unpredictable onset in the days after the inciting injury. No single reliable diagnostic test is currently available. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features such as T2-weighted spinal cord hyperintensity and loss of subarachnoid signal in a half-Fourier single-shot turbo spin echo (HASTE) sequence have been associated with PMM, but are sometimes present in other dogs with severe deficits. Magnetic resonance imaging findings in 22 dogs with a clinical or histopathologic diagnosis of PMM and 38 deep pain-negative paraplegic dogs were compared in a retrospective case-control study. Length of T2-weighted hyperintense spinal cord change and HASTE signal loss were significantly associated with clinically evident PMM (P = .0019 and P = .0085), however, there were no significant differences between groups when analysis was restricted to dogs not yet showing clinical signs of PMM. The PMM group also had significantly shorter compressive lesions than the control group (P = 0.026), suggesting a possible role of more severe focal pressure at the extrusion site. A segment of total loss of contrast enhancement in the venous sinuses and meninges, a feature not previously described, was more common in the PMM group and the difference approached significance (P = 0.054). Findings show that MRI features can support the diagnosis in dogs with clinical evidence of PMM, and absence of these features supports absence of PMM at time of imaging. However, their absence does not reliably differentiate dogs with imminent progressive myelomalacia from other dogs with severe deficits following intervertebral disc extrusion.  相似文献

Congenital cerebellar disorders can be caused by in utero or neonatal infections, genetic aberrations causing malformations, and neurodegenerative processes. Most congenital cerebellar disorders are diagnosed definitively with histopathology. However, antemortem diagnosis of cerebellar malformations can be made by imaging the brain. This paper describes the antemortem appearance of a congenital cerebellar malformation in a Boston Terrier puppy on ultrasound images. This appearance was compared with the postmortem findings that were comparable to Dandy Walker Syndrome in humans. A previous report of this syndrome in Boston Terriers suggests the problem may be inherited in this breed.  相似文献
