Ranking possible carcinogenic hazards   总被引:9,自引:0,他引:9  
This review discusses reasons why animal cancer tests cannot be used to predict absolute human risks. Such tests, however, may be used to indicate that some chemicals might be of greater concern than others. Possible hazards to humans from a variety of rodent carcinogens are ranked by an index that relates the potency of each carcinogen in rodents to the exposure in humans. This ranking suggests that carcinogenic hazards from current levels of pesticide residues or water pollution are likely to be of minimal concern relative to the background levels of natural substances, though one cannot say whether these natural exposures are likely to be of major or minor importance.  相似文献

Five Canadian oat genotypes were grown at six environments in Manitoba to assess the effects of genotype, environment, and genotype‐by‐environment interaction on oat starch properties and end‐product quality. Genotypic variation was significant for total starch, amylose content, starch swelling volume (SSV), Rapid Visco Analyser (RVA) pasting viscosities, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) thermal properties, and starch gel texture as well as the quality of flakes and cooked oatmeal made by laboratory‐scale methodologies. Environment was the dominant factor contributing to the total variation of starch content, RVA pasting viscosities, SSV, and DSC thermal properties. Most measurements of starch gel and oatmeal texture were not affected by growing environment. Cross‐over analysis revealed that changes in the ranking of genotypes across environments occurred for starch RVA hot paste, breakdown and shear thinning viscosities, work of gel compression, flake hydration capacity, and the proportion of large flakes, indicating that breeding for these traits would require multiple testing sites. Trends were observed between oatmeal texture and several flake and starch gel properties, warranting further study. Results of this study indicated that there is a potential to breed Canadian oat cultivars with improved functional end‐product quality for use in the milling and food manufacturing industries.  相似文献

Solutions of commercial soybean lipoxygenase (100 microgram/ML in 0.2 M citrate-phosphate and 0.2 M Tris buffer were subjected to pressures of 0.1, 200, 400, and 600 MPa for 20 mm. The enzyme was stable at atmospheric pressure (0.1 MPa) over a wide pH range (5-9). In citrate phosphate buffer, the enzyme had maximum stability over the pH range 58 in untreated samples and after treatment at 200 MPa, but with increasing pressure, the pH stability range become narrower and centered around pH 78. The enzyme was more sensitive to acid than alkali, and at pH 9, it lost virtually all activity after pressurization at 600 MPa for 20 mm in both buffers. The activity of the crude enzyme extracted from tomatoes treated at 200 and 300 MPa for 10 mm was not significantly different from that of the untreated tomatoes, while a pressure of 400 MPa for 10 mm caused a significant decrease in activity and treatment at 600 MPa led to complete and irreversible activity loss. Compared to unpressurized tomatoes, treatment at 600 MPa gave significantly reduced levels of hexanal, cis-3-hexenal, and trans-2-hexenal, which are important contributors to "fresh" tomato flavor, and this was attributed to the inactivation of lipoxygenase.  相似文献

Cold conditions resulting from a combination of temperature, wind, and wetness result in increased energy required for maintenance. Constant levels of intake reduce energy available for production. Direct effects of cold include reduced rate and efficiency of growth and milk production. Indirect effects on measures of reproductive efficiency are well documented. Impacts on health and longevity are perhaps less obvious but are no doubt affected. Energy supplementation is an obvious need for cold-stressed animals. For maximum effectiveness, efforts should incorporate a systems approach and integrate the expertise of many disciplines into a logical decision-making process. The entire spectrum of animal response, not just short-term acute response, must be included in environmental management.  相似文献

Aluminum and iron were measured in daily samples collected at urban and rural sites near Ft. Myers, Florida, in 1995–1996 using a dichotomous sampler. Al and Fe concentrations were low during most of the year but they increased dramatically duringsummer when African dust was advected into Florida. The ratioof fine (less than 2.5 m diameter) to coarse (2.5–10 m) Al and Fe is relatively constant in African dust events with the fine accounting for a third to a half of the total. Also the mass ratio of Al-to-Fe is relatively constant at 1.8, a value similar to average crustal material. In contrast, in non-African dust the fine-to-coarse and Al-to-Fe ratios are extremely variable and generally much lower than those duringAfrican events when dust concentrations ranged up to 86 g m-3. The timing and magnitude of the Ft. Myers dust peaks closely matched those measured concurrently in Miami, 200 km to the southeast. Large areas of the eastern United States are frequently impacted by African dust every summer. Although dustconcentrations can reach very high values it seems unlikely that African dust events alone will cause a violation of the Environmental Protection Agency's standards for PM 2.5 or PM 10. However, African dust in conjunction with emissions from local and regional sources could conceivably present a problemwith compliance. The probability of such an occurrence is heightened by the fact that dust concentrations are highest in the summer when pollution levels are often at a maximum in theeastern states.  相似文献
