Evidence of the glycation and denaturation of LTP1 during the malting and brewing process

The influence of malting and brewing processes on the chemical and structural modifications occurring on LTP1 was investigated by mass spectrometry and circular dichroism. Proteins were first purified from malt, and samples were collected at various steps of beer processing performed on two barley cultivars. The levels of LTP1 found in malt were not significantly different from the amounts in barley seed. However, in malt, both LTP1b, a post-translational form of LTP1, and a third isoform named LTP1c were isolated. Moreover, both of these proteins were found to be heterogeneously glycated but still exhibited an alpha-helix structure. Both glycated LTP1 and LTP1b were recovered during mashing. It was also shown that glycated LTP1 was unfolded during heat treatment of wort boiling, which is in agreement with the denatured form previously isolated from beer.

Human Exposure to Rabid Free‐Ranging Cats: A Continuing Public Health Concern in Pennsylvania

Rabid free‐ranging cats have been a public health concern in Pennsylvania since raccoon variant rabies first was recognized in the state in the early 1980s. Over the last decade, between 1.5 and 2.5% of cats submitted to Pennsylvania's state laboratories for rabies testing have been positive. In this report, we describe the extent of rabies in free‐ranging cats in Pennsylvania. We also present two examples of human exposure to rabid free‐ranging cats that occurred in Pennsylvania during 2010–2011 and the public health actions taken to address rabies exposure in the humans and animals. We then describe the concerns surrounding the unvaccinated and free‐ranging cat population in Pennsylvania and possible options in managing this public and animal health problem.     

Outcome of surgical correction of meconium impactions in 8 foals

Meconium impactions are only rarely refractory to medical therapy. The purpose of this paper is to examine the outcome of 8 foals that required an exploratory celiotomy to correct a meconium impaction. Between 1984 and 1992, 24 foals were referred with a primary diagnosis of meconium impaction. All foals were treated medically prior to and following referral. Of the 24 foals, 8 had impactions requiring surgical intervention. Exploratory celiotomies were performed, and the impaction was reduced manually or by enterotomy. Follow up information was available on 7 foals. All survived surgery and were discharged. Four of the 8 foals matured and raced. Two foals were euthanatized due to extensive serosal adhesions and one foal was euthanatized due to an unrelated orthopedic condition. Our results support the decision for an exploratory surgery only after aggressive medical therapy has failed. Several treatment options have been developed in recent years that have reduced the number of foals that may require surgery.
