The effectiveness of the neonicotinoid insecticide imidacloprid was evaluated against four psocid pests of stored grain. This research was undertaken because of the growing importance of psocids in stored grain and the need to identify methods for their control. The mortality and reproduction of adults of Liposcelis bostrychophila Badonnel, L. entomophila (Enderlein), L. decolor (Pearman) and L. paeta Pearman in wheat treated with imidacloprid were determined. There were five application rates (0.5, 1, 2, 5 and 10 mg AI kg(-1) grain) and an untreated control. There were significant effects of application rate on both adult mortality and reproduction for all four species, but the effect of imidacloprid was sometimes more pronounced on reproduction. Imidacloprid was most effective against L. bostrychophila, with 100% adult mortality after 7 d at 5 mg AI kg(-1), 14 d at 2 mg AI kg(-1) and 28 d at 0.5 and 1 mg AI kg(-1). No live progeny were produced at 2 mg AI kg(-1). For L. decolor, there was 100% adult mortality after 28 d at 10 mg AI kg(-1) and no live progeny were produced at 2 mg AI kg(-1). For L. entomophila, there was 100% adult mortality after 14 d at 10 mg AI kg(-1) and 28 d at 2 and 5 mg AI kg(-1). No live progeny were produced at 10 mg AI kg(-1). At 10 mg AI kg(-1) there was 100% mortality of L. paeta adults after 28 d exposure and no live progeny developed. Because reproduction at some application rates occurred only in the first 14 d of exposure, it is concluded that the application rate leading to population extinction was 1 mg AI kg(-1) for L. bostrychophila, 2 mg AI kg(-1) for L. decolor and L. entomophila and 5 mg AI kg(-1) for L. paeta. This study shows that imidacloprid has potential as a grain protectant to control all four Liposcelis species in stored grain.  相似文献

A COMMD1(MURR1) deletion has been reported as the cause of copper toxicosis (CT) in Bedlington terriers. Recent studies identified Bedlington terriers with copper accumulation without homozygous COMMD1 deletions. Wilson disease in humans is a copper storage disorder similar to CT caused by mutations in ATP7B, and COMMD1 has been shown to interact with the ATP7B protein. ATP7B may act as a modifier in CT, allowing for copper accumulation in Bedlington terriers with one deletion or other variations in COMMD1. In this study, ATP7B was cloned and sequence analysis conducted in a subset of Bedlington terriers from a pedigree that does not show complete association between the COMMD1 deletion and CT. Eleven polymorphisms, two in the coding region, were identified in the Bedlington terrier ATP7B gene. However, these are not unique to the Bedlington terrier and pedigree analysis suggests that ATP7B is not a modifier of COMMD1 in this subset of dogs.  相似文献

The effect of temperature on the development, growth, survival and settlement of Perna viridis was studied under controlled conditions to provide information needed for the development of commercial hatchery technology for green mussel P. viridis. Total mortality of the larvae occurred after 24 h at temperatures of 33°C and 35°C. At 24°C, larvae took longer to settle than at temperatures of 27°C, 29°C and 31°C. For optimum larval development (8–13 h), growth (17.2±0.84 μm day–1) and survival (55.2±0.84%), a hatchery rearing temperature of 31°C is required. For settlement no significant difference was seen between the percentage settlement at 29°C (49.3±3.34%) and 31°C (45.8±1.76%). However, the process of settlement began and ended earlier at 29°C (from 15 to 18 days) than at 31°C (from 18 to 20 days). Thus for larval settlement a temperature of 29°C is recommended.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of silicon (Si) and phosphorus (P) application on crop productivity, grain quality, water-use efficiency (WUE), and soil enzyme activity in aerobic rice (AR) at Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi, India. Four levels each of Si (0, 40, 80, and 120 kg Si ha–1) and P (0, 30, 60, and 90 kg P2O5 ha–1) were tested in a factorial randomized block design (FRBD) replicated thrice. The growth, yield and quality of AR were enhanced with increasing Si and P application rates and a similar trend was observed for WUE and soil enzyme activity. The highest grain yield of AR was recorded with 120 kg Si and 90 kg P2O5 ha–1 followed by 80 kg Si and 60 kg P2O5 ha–1 and the lowest in control. The grain, straw yield and water productivity increased by 10–40%, 5–30%, and 10.2–39%, respectively in different treatments over control. Though, all studied parameters showed increment with increasing dose of Si and P; however 60 kg P2O5 and 80 kg Si ha–1 were statistically superior to their other respective doses. In conclusion, supplementation of Si and P fertilizers substantially increased the AR productivity in Trans-Gangetic plains of India (Figure 1).  相似文献

Prosopis cineraria (L.) Druce, family Fabaceae, is an important multipurpose tree species of the Indian Thar Desert. It is an extremely drought and heat tolerant plant and has ability to survive in highly alkaline and saline environments. Considering the commercial, horticultural and ecological importance of P. cineraria, there is a great need to develop genomic resources in the form of microsatellite markers for the genetic enhancement of this crop. We identified and characterized 10 microsatellite markers in P. cineraria by cross species amplification. Total 18 Simple Sequence Repeat (SSR) primer pairs developed in P. chilensis, P. alba, and P. flexuosa were used to amplify SSR loci in P. cineraria. Out of eighteen SSR markers tested, ten (55.5%) amplified recognizable amplicons. The number of alleles detected at each locus ranged from one to four, a total of 24 with an average of 2.4 alleles. Observed heterozygosity (Ho) and expected heterozygosity (He) values varied from 0.14 to 0.85 and 0.21 to 0.56 with an average of 0.47 and 0.37, respectively. The polymorphic information content (PIC) values ranged from 0.49 to 0.78 with an average of 0.66. Of the nine polymorphic markers, seven were highly informative and polymorphic (PIC > 0.5). These microsatellite markers are characterized for the first time in P. cineraria. All microsatellite markers identified in this study may be useful in comparative genomics and population genetics studies of P. cineraria.  相似文献

Mutton and lamb sales continue to grow globally at a rate of 5% per year. However, sheep farming struggles with low profit margins due to high feed costs and modest carcass yields. Selecting those sheep expected to convert feed efficiently and have high carcass merit, as early as possible in their life cycle, could significantly improve the profitability of sheep farming. Unfortunately, direct measurement of feed conversion efficiency (via residual feed intake [RFI]) and carcass merit is a labor-intensive and expensive procedure. Thus, indirect, marker-assisted evaluation of these traits has been explored as a means of reducing the cost of its direct measurement. One promising and potentially inexpensive route to discover biomarkers of RFI and/or carcass merit is metabolomics. Using quantitative metabolomics, we profiled the blood serum metabolome (i.e., the sum of all measurable metabolites) associated with sheep RFI and carcass merit and identified candidate biomarkers of these traits. The study included 165 crossbred ram-lambs that underwent direct measurement of feed consumption to determine their RFI classification (i.e., low vs. high) using the GrowSafe System over a period 40 d. Carcass merit was evaluated after slaughter using standardized methods. Prior to being sent to slaughter, one blood sample was drawn from each animal, and serum prepared and frozen at −80 °C to limit metabolite degradation. A subset of the serum samples was selected based on divergent RFI and carcass quality for further metabolomic analyses. The analyses were conducted using three analytical methods (nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, liquid chromatography mass spectrometry, and inductively coupled mass spectrometry), which permitted the identification and quantification of 161 unique metabolites. Biomarker analyses identified three significant (P < 0.05) candidate biomarkers of sheep RFI (AUC = 0.80), seven candidate biomarkers of carcass yield grade (AUC = 0.77), and one candidate biomarker of carcass muscle-to-bone ratio (AUC = 0.74). The identified biomarkers appear to have roles in regulating energy metabolism and protein synthesis. These results suggest that serum metabolites could be used to categorize and predict sheep for their RFI and carcass merit. Further validation using a larger (3×) and more diverse cohort of sheep is required to confirm these findings.  相似文献

Present study demonstrates the effect of sucrose and ABA on germination of encapsulated somatic embryos of guava (Psidium guajava L.). Sucrose and ABA at different concentrations were also evaluated for their effects on maturation and germination of somatic embryos. Mature somatic embryos developed on MS medium containing high concentration of sucrose (10%) or ABA (1.0 mg l−1) showed inhibition in germination if they continued to be in same medium for 4 weeks. With increasing concentrations of sucrose (3–9%) or ABA (0.01–1.0 mg l−1) in medium, percent germination of encapsulated somatic embryos decreased significantly. Encapsulated somatic embryos after storage on MS medium supplemented with 9% sucrose or 1 mg l−1 ABA for different duration (0–60 days) germinated when they were transferred to medium containing 3% sucrose. About 20.8% and 37.5% encapsulated somatic embryos germinated after storage on ABA (1 mg l−1) or sucrose (9%) for 60 days, respectively. Temporarily suppression in germination of encapsulated somatic embryos by high concentration of sucrose or ABA may be important for short-term conservation of elite genotype of guava.  相似文献
