Polyploidy in blackberries and ploidy differences between Rubus species are obstacles to the efficient introduction of valuable germplasm, both intra- and interspecific, into blackberry breeding programs. Expansion of the germplasm base would be facilitated by reducing the ploidy level of blackberry cultivars to the diploid level. In this report selection of twin seed, interspecific hybridization, and pollen irradiation were compared as methods in the recovery of dihaploids from tetraploid blackberry cultivars. One dihaploid was obtained through selection of twin seed and several were obtained following interspecific hybridization. The infrequency of twinning and difficulty in detecting twin seed in Rubus reduced the efficiency of this method. The efficiency with which dihaploids could be obtained following interspecific hybridization varied with the pollen parent. Reduced seed set and seed quality following pollinations with respectively R. parvifolius and R. hirsutus could be used to advantage in the recovery of dihaploids from blackberries. Ploidy reduction in several tetraploid blackberry cultivars was obtained following pollinations with 100 and 150 kR gamma irradiated pollen. Most of the seedlings obtained at the 50 kR dosage were aneuploid. Pollen irradiation at 150 kR was the most efficient method of obtaining dihaploids from tetraploid blackberries. Twenty percent of the seedlings obtained following this treatment were dihaploid.  相似文献

Migratory fishes can be threatened by conditions encountered along dispersal pathways that impede access to feeding or breeding grounds. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that amphidromous fishes are equally or more sensitive to conditions along dispersal pathways than conditions in primary residential habitats. We did so by conducting distribution‐wide population surveys of all five amphidromous gobies native to the Hawaiian Islands to assess responses to in‐stream habitat, invasive species and watershed land use. We used Redundancy Analyses to assess whether goby densities varied according to local, downstream or upstream conditions. We found that population densities of the two non‐climbing species (Eleotris sandwicensis, Stenogobius hawaiiensis) varied according to local land use and local habitat conditions. Greater densities of E. sandwicensis also were found in watersheds with greater forest cover upstream of survey sites. Lower densities of two species that migrate farther inland (Awaous stamineus, Sicyopterus stimpsoni) were observed in watersheds with greater anthropogenic land use downstream or at the stream mouth. Population densities of E. sandwicensis and both Sicydiine species (Lentipes concolor, S. stimpsoni) also were lower when non‐native Poeciliids were locally present or present downstream in the watershed. These findings suggest that densities of native Hawaiian amphidromous fishes are equally or more sensitive to conditions along migratory pathways relative to conditions in primary residential habitats. Thus, alleviating pressures by removing invasive species and restoring habitat along dispersal pathways could be effective approaches to increasing densities of amphidromous species, especially those that migrate farther inland to higher elevations.  相似文献

The climate is undergoing rapid changes with rising atmospheric CO2 concentration, increasing temperatures and changes in the hydrological regimes resulting in more frequent and intense drought periods. These three climate change factors will, separately and in combination, affect the biotic and abiotic components of soil communities. This paper reviews the impact of climate change on field communities of enchytraeids with special emphasis on Cognettia sphagnetorum because most relevant studies have involved this species. C. sphagnetorum prefers cold and wet environments and several studies suggest that reductions of soil moisture may have dramatic consequences for C. sphagnetorum and other enchytraeid species. Effects of changing temperatures are less clear partly because thermal conditions influence soil moisture, which complicate the predictions of the outcome from such changes. The predicted increasing annual mean temperature may be stimulating and expand the season for growth and reproduction of enchytraeids; on the other hand, an increased frequency of extreme weather events, with heat waves during summer and bare soil freezes during autumn and spring, may occasionally cause severe mortality. Stimulating effects of increased atmospheric CO2 have been observed, perhaps due to increased food availability via root and litter production. However, effects of CO2 are also influenced by moisture and temperature. Generally, there is a lack of research looking into the complicated interactions between various climate change factors, and little is known about the potential of enchytraeids to adapt to a changing climate. Existing data suggest that C. sphagnetorum is not capable of adapting to a drier climate, thus, a decline in abundance and distribution of this species is possible. Since enchytraeids are of ecological significance in some types of habitats, a reduction may result in serious disruption in the functioning of these decomposer communities.  相似文献

The environmental photochemical kinetics of tylosin, a common veterinary macrolide antibiotic and growth promoter, were investigated under simulated sunlight. An efficient, reversible photoisomerization was characterized using kinetic, mass spectrometry, and proton nuclear magnetic resonance data. The photoisomerization was confirmed to occur by a rotation about the distal alkene of the ketodiene functionality. Concurrent forward (quantum yield = 0.39 +/- 0.09) and back (quantum yield = 0.32 +/- 0.08) reactions lead to a photochemical equilibrium near a tylosin/photoisomer ratio of 50:50, completed in less than 2 min under a spectrum equivalent to noontime, summer sunlight. The activity of the isomer for the inhibition of Escherichia coli DH5alpha growth was observed to be less than that of tylosin. On a longer time scale than that of isomerization, the isomer mixture undergoes photolysis with a quantum yield of (1.4 +/- 0.3) x 10(-3). The observed quantum yields and UV-vis absorbance data allow for the prediction of the photochemical behavior of tylosin in most environmental systems. Indirect photosensitization was not a significant loss process in solutions of Suwannee River fulvic acid with concentrations from 1 to 20 mg L(-1).  相似文献

Quantifying the sensitivity of soil organic matter decomposition (SOM) to global warming is critical for predict future impacts of climate change on soil organic carbon stocks (SOC) and soil respiration, especially in semi‐arid regions such as north‐eastern Brazil, where SOC stocks are naturally small. In this study, the responses of the labile and recalcitrant carbon components and soil respiration dynamics were evaluated in three different soil types and land use systems (native vegetation, cropland and pasture) of the Brazilian semi‐arid region, when submitted to temperature increase. After 169 days of incubation, the results showed that an increase of 5°C generated an average increase in CO2 emission of 12.0%, but which could reach 28.1%. Overall, the labile carbon (LC) in areas of native vegetation showed greater sensitivity to temperature than in cropland areas. It was also observed that recalcitrant carbon (RC) was more sensitive to warming than LC. Our results indicate that Brazil's semi‐arid region presents a substantial vulnerability to global warming, and that the sensitivity of RC and of LC in areas of native vegetation to warming can enhance SOC losses, contributing to positive feedback on climate change, and compromising the productive systems of the region. However, further studies evaluating other types of soil and texture and management systems should be carried out to consolidate the results obtained and to improve the understanding about SOM decomposition in the Brazilian semi‐arid region.  相似文献

We have combined published data on ecology and conservation status with phylogenetic information for all native British angiosperms. We use this information to explore patterns of threat with regard to taxonomy, ecology and life history.Threat status is significantly clumped among orders. However among genera, we identify only Limonium (sea lavenders) and Sorbus (whitebeams) as containing more threatened species than expected under a hypergeometric model, and we discuss the artefactual reasons for this finding. We present a table of Britain's 10 most threatened families according to this statistic.Threat status is also strongly clumped across habitat types using two published schemes. In an analysis excluding artificially influential genera, we identify the `arable and horticultural', `montane', `inland rock', and `supra-littoral sediment' habitats as containing more threatened species than would be expected under a hypergeometric model and discuss these results.Finally, we use phylogenetically independent contrasts to show that threat status is correlated with small size, low fecundity, and insect rather than wind pollination for the native British flora.  相似文献

Axonal trauma leads to a series of pathologic events that can culminate in neuronal death. Although the precise mechanisms of retinal ganglion cell death after optic nerve crush in the rat model have not been elucidated, glutamate antagonists can protect retinal ganglion cells after optic nerve axotomy. We therefore explored whether a glutamate congener was toxic if applied directly within the optic nerve, or if toxicity depended upon an interaction at the cell body level. NMDA reduced retinal ganglion cell survival when applied directly into the rat optic nerve. Glutamate can be toxic if administered within the optic nerve; a direct effect at the cell body is not necessary. Future work will help to additionally unravel the steps by which axotomy induces excitotoxic damage to ganglion cells, and perhaps indicate protective interventions.  相似文献

Northern pike (Esox lucius) are opportunistic predators that can switch to alternative prey species after preferred prey have declined. This trophic adaptability allows invasive pike to have negative effects on aquatic food webs. In Southcentral Alaska, invasive pike are a substantial concern because they have spread to important spawning and rearing habitat for salmonids and are hypothesised to be responsible for recent salmonid declines. We described the relative importance of salmonids and other prey species to pike diets in the Deshka River and Alexander Creek in Southcentral Alaska. Salmonids were once abundant in both rivers, but they are now rare in Alexander Creek. In the Deshka River, we found that juvenile Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) and coho salmon (O. kisutch) dominated pike diets and that small pike consumed more of these salmonids than large pike. In Alexander Creek, pike diets reflected the distribution of spawning salmonids, which decrease with distance upstream. Although salmonids dominated pike diets in the lowest reach of the stream, Arctic lamprey (Lampetra camtschatica) and slimy sculpin (Cottus cognatus) dominated pike diets in the middle and upper reaches. In both rivers, pike density did not influence diet and pike consumed smaller prey items than predicted by their gape‐width. Our data suggest that (1) juvenile salmonids are a dominant prey item for pike, (2) small pike are the primary consumers of juvenile salmonids and (3) pike consume other native fish species when juvenile salmonids are less abundant. Implications of this trophic adaptability are that invasive pike can continue to increase while driving multiple species to low abundance.  相似文献
