Fish are a rich source of the n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), particularly the highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA)
eicosapentaenoic (EPA; 20:5n-3) and docosahexaenoic (DHA; 22:6n-3) acids, which are vital constituents for cell membrane structure
and function, but which are also highly susceptible to attack by oxygen and other organic radicals. Resultant damage to PUFA
in membrane phospholipids can have serious consequences for cell membrane structure and function, with potential pathological
effects on cells and tissues. Physiological antioxidant protection involves both endogenous components, such as free-radical-scavenging
enzymes, and exogenous dietary micronutrients including tocopherols and tocotrienols, the vitamin E-type compounds widely
regarded as the primary lipid-soluble antioxidants. The antioxidant activities of tocopherols are imparted by their ability
to donate their phenolic hydrogen atoms to lipid (fatty acid) free radicals, resulting in the stabilization of the latter
and the termination of the lipid peroxidation chain reaction. However, tocopherols can also prevent PUFA peroxidation by acting
as quenchers of singlet oxygen. Recent studies on marine fish have shown correlations between dietary and tissue PUFA/tocopherol
ratios and incidence of lipid peroxidation, as indicated by the levels of thiobarbituric-acid reactive substances (TBARS)
and isoprostanes. These studies also showed that feeding diets containing oxidized oil significantly affected the activities
of liver antioxidant defence enzymes and that dietary tocopherol partially attenuated these effects. However, there is evidence
that dietary tocopherols can affect fatty acid metabolism in other ways. An increase in membrane PUFA was observed in rats
deficient in vitamin E. This was suggested to be due to overproduction of PUFA arising from increased activity of the desaturation/elongation
mechanisms responsible for the synthesis of PUFA. Consistent with this, increased desaturation of 18:3n-3 and 20:5n-3 in hepatocytes
from salmon fed diets deficient in tocopherol and/or astaxanthin has been observed. Although the mechanism is unclear, tocopherols
may influence the biosynthesis of n-3PUFA through alteration of cellular oxidation potential or peroxide tone. 相似文献
Fish fillet quality may be influenced by the antioxidant level in preslaughter diet. Thus, the effects of dietary α‐tocopheryl acetate supplementation and feeding time on the flesh quality of farmed Atlantic halibut Hippoglossus hippoglossus L. were investigated. Halibut of mean initial weight of 312 ± 12.3 g were divided into two groups and fed commercial diets, supplemented with different levels of α‐tocopheryl acetate at the dietary inclusion levels of 189 and 613 mg kg?1 diet. Fish were sampled after 6,9,12 and 24 weeks. Over the experimental period, they reached a final mean weight of 1320 ± 108.4 g. Tissue α‐tocopherol of fillet and liver was significantly affected by the levels of α‐tocopheryl acetate given with the diets (P < 0.001). In storage on ice, fillets of fish fed the diets high in α‐tocopheryl acetate exhibited significantly lower (P < 0.001) levels of lipid oxidation. The colour of fillets in all groups deteriorated slightly, but diet did not affect this process. Halibut fed the supplemented diets for longer periods were better protected against lipid oxidation (P < 0.001) and colour deterioration (P < 0.01) than those fed for shorter periods. However, after 9 days of storage, lipid oxidation levels were still extremely low [< 0.6 µg malondialdehyde (MDA) g?1 fillet], even in fillets of fish fed the low α‐tocopheryl acetate diet for a short period preslaughter. Different slaughtering methods tested at the end of the trial showed that percussive stunning can delay the onset of rigor mortis by 8–12 h compared with bleeding of the fish. These results suggest that halibut fillets have enhanced shelf‐life stability even at low doses of dietary α‐tocopheryl acetate, and that other factors in the antioxidant defence mechanisms of the species might play a major role in the prevention of lipid oxidation. 相似文献
The effects of dietary α‐tocopheryl acetate supplementation and different slaughtering methods were investigated on the flesh quality of farmed market‐size turbot Scophthalmus maximus (L). Turbot were divided into three groups and fed commercial diets, supplemented with different levels of α‐tocopheryl acetate at the following dietary inclusion levels: 72 (100), 547 (500), 969 (1000) (mg of α‐tocopheryl acetate kg?1 diet, analytical values with diet codes in brackets). After 5 months, fish (mean weight 1056 ± 19.7 g) from each dietary treatment were sampled, applying three different slaughtering methods: (A) bleeding in ice water; (B) thermal shock, no bleeding; (C) percussion followed by bleeding in ice water. The time course of rigor mortis was evaluated, using pH, rigor index and mechanical compression tests. The results showed that the three parameters corresponded very well. Percussive stunning resulted in higher initial post‐mortem pH (P < 0.01) and a significantly delayed onset of rigor mortis (P < 0.05). Diet significantly affected shelf‐life, with fillets from fish fed diets 500 and 1000 having lower TBARS (thiobarbituric acid reactive substances) numbers from day 2 (P < 0.001) and less colour deterioration from day 7 of storage on ice onwards (P < 0.05). These results suggest that an increase in dietary α‐tocopheryl acetate before slaughter as well as careful selection of the slaughtering method may greatly enhance the flesh quality of market‐size turbot. 相似文献

The responses of Pinus sylvestris seedlings grown in organic and mineral soils in the presence of Cd were compared inorder to evaluate the amelioration of Cd toxicity by soil organicmatter. Low levels of ammonium acetate-extractable Cd in organicsoil, compared with mineral soil, indicate a strong affinity ofCd for soil organic matter. Soil organic matter was notfound to ameliorate Cd toxicity in terms of shoot growth,however Cd levels in shoots were lower in seedlings grownin organic soil than those grown in mineral soil. Root Caand Mg concentrations were higher in organic soil. Improvednutrition of the seedlings in organic soil and organiccomplexing might be responsible for reduced Cd accumulationin shoots. Cd increased soluble carbohydrate concentrationand decreased starch concentration in the seedlings grownin organic soil. It has been generally accepted that the method of moments (MoM) variogram, which has been widely applied in soil science, requires about 100 sites at an appropriate interval apart to describe the variation adequately. This sample size is often larger than can be afforded for soil surveys of agricultural fields or contaminated sites. Furthermore, it might be a much larger sample size than is needed where the scale of variation is large. A possible alternative in such situations is the residual maximum likelihood (REML) variogram because fewer data appear to be required. The REML method is parametric and is considered reliable where there is trend in the data because it is based on generalized increments that filter trend out and only the covariance parameters are estimated. Previous research has suggested that fewer data are needed to compute a reliable variogram using a maximum likelihood approach such as REML, however, the results can vary according to the nature of the spatial variation. There remain issues to examine: how many fewer data can be used, how should the sampling sites be distributed over the site of interest, and how do different degrees of spatial variation affect the data requirements? The soil of four field sites of different size, physiography, parent material and soil type was sampled intensively, and MoM and REML variograms were calculated for clay content. The data were then sub-sampled to give different sample sizes and distributions of sites and the variograms were computed again. The model parameters for the sets of variograms for each site were used for cross-validation. Predictions based on REML variograms were generally more accurate than those from MoM variograms with fewer than 100 sampling sites. A sample size of around 50 sites at an appropriate distance apart, possibly determined from variograms of ancillary data, appears adequate to compute REML variograms for kriging soil properties for precision agriculture and contaminated sites. 相似文献
Structure is an important physical feature of the soil that is associated with water movement, the soil atmosphere, microorganism activity and nutrient uptake. A soil without any obvious organisation of its components is known as apedal and this state can have marked effects on several soil processes. Accurate maps of topsoil and subsoil structure are desirable for a wide range of models that aim to predict erosion, solute transport, or flow of water through the soil. Also such maps would be useful to precision farmers when deciding how to apply nutrients and pesticides in a site-specific way, and to target subsoiling and soil structure stabilization procedures.
Typically, soil structure is inferred from bulk density or penetrometer resistance measurements and more recently from soil resistivity and conductivity surveys. To measure the former is both time-consuming and costly, whereas observations made by the latter methods can be made automatically and swiftly using a vehicle-mounted penetrometer or resistivity and conductivity sensors. The results of each of these methods, however, are affected by other soil properties, in particular moisture content at the time of sampling, texture, and the presence of stones. Traditional methods of observing soil structure identify the type of ped and its degree of development. Methods of ranking such observations from good to poor for different soil textures have been developed. Indicator variograms can be computed for each category or rank of structure and these can be summed to give the sum of indicator variograms (SIV).
Observations of the topsoil and subsoil structure were made at four field sites where the soil had developed on different parent materials. The observations were ranked by four methods and indicator and the sum of indicator variograms were computed and modelled for each method of ranking. The individual indicators were then kriged with the parameters of the appropriate indicator variogram model to map the probability of encountering soil with the structure represented by that indicator. The model parameters of the SIVs for each ranking system were used with the data to krige the soil structure classes, and the results are compared with those for the individual indicators. The relations between maps of soil structure and selected wavebands from aerial photographs are examined as basis for planning surveys of soil structure. 相似文献
Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) juveniles were fed either 100% fish oil (FO), 75% vegetable oil (VO), or 100% VO throughout their life cycle to harvest weight followed by a finishing diet period when all groups were fed 100% FO. The two experimental VO diets were tested at two different locations (Scotland and Norway) against the same control diet (100% FO). The VO blend was composed of rapeseed oil, palm oil, and linseed oil using capelin oil as a control for fatty acid class compositions. Flesh fatty acid profiles were measured regularly throughout the experiment, with the times of sampling determined by changes in pellet size/lipid content and fish life stage. Growth and mortality rates were not significantly affected by dietary fatty acid compositions throughout the life cycle, except during the seawater winter period in Norway when both growth and protein utilization were increased in salmon fed 100% VO compared to 100% FO. Flesh fatty acid composition was highly influenced by that of the diet, and after the finishing diet period the weekly intake recommendations of very long chain n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (VLCn-3 PUFA) for human health were 80 and 56% satisfied by a 200 g meal of 75% VO and 100% VO flesh, respectively. No effect on flesh astaxanthin levels was observed in relation to changing dietary oil sources. Sensory evaluation showed only minor differences between salmon flesh from the dietary groups, although prior to the finishing diet period, flesh from 100% VO had less rancid and marine characteristics and was preferred over flesh from the other dietary groups by a trained taste panel. After the finishing diet period, the levels of typical vegetable oil fatty acids in flesh were reduced, whereas those of VLCn-3 PUFA increased to levels comparable with a 100% FO fed salmon. No differences in any of the sensory characteristics were observed between dietary groups. By blending VOs to provide balanced levels of dietary fatty acids, up to 100% of the fish oil can be replaced by the VO blend without compromising growth or flesh quality. At the same time, 75% of the dietary fish oil can be replaced without compromising flesh VLCn-3 PUFA content, thereby providing a beneficial nutritional profile for human consumption. 相似文献
There is growing concern that air pollution may have adverse impacts on crops in developing countries, yet this has been little studied. This paper addresses this issue, for a major leguminous crop of the Indian sub continent, examining the effect of air pollution in and around an Indian city. A field study was conducted using a gradient approach to elucidate the impact of air pollutants on selected production characteristics of Vigna radiata L. cv. Malviya Jyoti (mung bean) plants grown from germination to maturity at locations with differing concentrations of air pollutants around peri-urban and rural areas of Varanasi. The 6 -h daily mean SO2, NO2 and O3 concentrations varied from 8.05 to 32.2 ppb, 11.7 to 80.1 ppb and 9.7 to 58.5 ppb, respectively, between the sites. Microclimatic conditions did not vary significantly between the sites. Changes in plant performance at different sites were evaluated with reference to ambient air quality status. Reductions in biomass accumulation and seed yields were highest at the site experiencing highest concentrations of all three gaseous pollutants. The magnitude of response indicated that at peri-urban sites SO2, NO2 and O3 were all contributing to these effects, whereas at rural sites NO2 and O3 combinations appeared to have more influence. The quality of seed was also found to be negatively influenced by the ambient levels of pollutants. It is concluded that the air pollution regime of Varanasi City causes a major threat to mung bean plants, both in terms of yield and crop quality, with serious implications for the nutrition of the urban poor. 相似文献
