Bird mortality in fishing gear is a global conservation issue and it is recognised that bycatch in industrial longline and trawl fisheries threatens several seabird species. Little is known however about the effects of bycatch in small-scale gillnet fisheries on bird populations. Here we review 30 studies reporting bird bycatch in coastal gillnet fisheries in the Baltic Sea and the North Sea region in order to assess the magnitude of this problem and potential effects on bird populations. All species of diving birds that occur in the study region, including divers (loons), grebes, sea ducks, diving ducks, auks and cormorants, have been reported as dying in fishing nets. The cumulative bycatch estimate extracted from several localized studies providing such information, suggests that about 90,000 birds die in fishing nets annually, a number that is almost certainly a substantial underestimate. We conclude that it is likely that between 100,000 and 200,000 waterbirds are killed per year. Geographic and temporal patterns of bycatch generally matched species distribution and periods of presence. Also, bycatch rates varied depending on species’ foraging technique and were influenced by net parameters and fishing depth. To evaluate effects of additive mortality on bird populations, we applied the Potential Biological Removal (PBR) concept to three species with the most extensive bycatch information. Agreeing with PBR assumptions we conclude that bycatch is a matter of concern for at least two of the three assessed species. We suggest that bycatch research in Europe and beyond should aim at unification of principles for bycatch assessment, setting new standards for the monitoring of waterbird populations so that vital rates and mortality data are recorded, and implementing quantifiable criteria for evaluating effects of fisheries bycatch.  相似文献

The degradation of chitosan by high-intensity ultrasound (HIU) as affected by ultrasound parameters and solution properties was investigated by gel permeation chromatography coupled with static light scattering. The molecular weight, radius of gyration, and polydispersity of chitosan were reduced by ultrasound treatment, whereas chitosan remained in the same random coil conformation and the degree of acetylation did not change after sonication. The results demonstrate that (1) the degradation of chitosan by ultrasound is primarily driven by mechanical forces and the degradation mechanism can be described by a random scission model; (2) the degradation rate is proportional to M w (3); and (3) the degradation rate coefficient is affected by ultrasound intensity, solution temperature, polymer concentration, and ionic strength, whereas acid concentration has little effect. Additionally, the data indicate that the degradation rate coefficient is affected by the degree of acetylation of chitosan and independent of the initial molecular weight.  相似文献

The extent to which secondary forests occupying degraded and abandoned lands provide suitable habitat for forest-adapted species is an important conservation issue in times of vanishing old growth forests. We used ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), a functionally important and diverse group of invertebrates, to investigate the recovery of soil taxa during secondary forest succession in the Atlantic Forest of Southern Brazil. We compared the resilience of epigeic vs. hypogeic ant assemblages. For this purpose we established 27 sites that encompassed a chronosequence from pastures to old growth forests on two contrasting soil types. Our results are based on a collection of 35 508 individuals in 40 genera.Richness and composition of ant assemblages in secondary forests have recovered slowly and have not approached conditions typical of old growth forests. The distribution of genera along the successional stages was arranged in a nested pattern where ant genera of younger successional stages were a subset of genera present in older stages. Edaphic conditions had no influence on the recovery process. Overall, richness of ants was lower at study sites with water-logged soils than at sites where soils did not exhibit hydromorphic properties. The hypogeic ant assemblage recovered more slowly than the epigeic assemblage.Our results show that secondary forests do not act as refuges for many forest-adapted animals which are currently restricted to discontinuous patches of old growth forest in the highly endangered Atlantic Forest of Brazil. Moreover, estimated recovery times of 50 to several hundred years suggest it would take much longer than previously presumed for complete recolonization.  相似文献

Lythrum salicaria extracts showed activity against the phytopathogenic fungus Cladosporium cucumerinum and activity against the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus, Proteus mirabilis and Microccocus luteus. Bioautography on thin-layer chromatograms was used to isolate the two antifungal triterpenoids oleanolic and ursolic acid. The hexahydroxydiphenoyl ester vescalagin was isolated as active principle of the antibacterial activity. Ficus insipida Willd. (Moraceae) is a fast growing tree species of early successional stages in the Amazonian nutrient-rich white-water floodplains (várzea). The species is one of the most economically important low-density wood species in the community-based forest management project in the Mamirauá Sustainable Development Reserve (MSDR) in Central Amazonia, where timber species are managed using a polycyclic selection system with a minimum logging diameter (MLD) of 50 cm and a cutting cycle of 25 years. In this study we analyze the floristic composition, stand structure and forest regeneration of a natural 20 year-old stand at an early successional stage and we model tree growth of diameter, height and volume of F. inspida based on tree-ring analysis to define management criteria. The volume growth model indicates that the preferred period for logging should be at a tree age of 17 years when the current annual volume increment peaks. This age corresponds to a diameter of 55 cm, which would be an appropriate MLD.  相似文献

Based on a recently discovered property of chloroacetamide herbicides—the inhibition of the incorporation of oleic acid into sporopollenin of Scenedesmus acutus—a rapid quantitative test was developed for chloroacetamide-type herbicidal activity. In this test, algal cells are incubated for 3 h with [14C]oleic acid, saponified and the lipids (including non-saponifiable ones) extracted and discarded. The radioactivity incorporated into the residual non-lipid fraction is determined, and inhibition of this incorporation is used as a marker of chloroacetamide-type activity. Twenty-two agrochemical compounds were screened in this assay, which was found to be very sensitive, a 50% inhibition being reached with submicromolar herbicide concentrations. It is specific to chloroacetamides and related amides, since all these herbicides tested were potent inhibitors, while other herbicides were not. Highest inhibition was shown by cafenstrole followed by butachlor, fluthiamid, metazachlor, alachlor, dimethenamid, metolachlor and mefenacet. For these herbicides (with the exception of butachlor) sensitivity in the test was positively correlated (r=0·984) with their phytotoxic effect on the alga. © 1998 SCI  相似文献

Context

Many connectivity metrics have been used to measure the connectivity of a landscape and to evaluate the effects of land-use changes and potential mitigation measures. However, there are still gaps in our understanding of how to accurately quantify landscape connectivity.

Objectives

A number of metrics only measure between-patch connectivity, i.e. the connectivity between different habitat patches, which can produce misleading results. This paper demonstrates that the inclusion of within-patch connectivity is important for accurate results.

Methods

The behavior of two metrics is compared: the Connectance Index (CONNECT), which measures only between-patch connectivity, and the effective mesh size (meff), which includes both within-patch and between-patch connectivity. The connectivity values of both metrics were calculated on a set of simulated landscapes. Twenty cities were then added to these landscapes to calculate the resulting changes in connectivity.

Results

We found that when using CONNECT counter-intuitive results occurred due to not including within-patch connectivity, such as scenarios where connectivity increased with increasing habitat loss and fragmentation. These counter-intuitive results were resolved when using meff. For example, landscapes with low habitat amount may be particularly sensitive to urban development, but this is not reflected by CONNECT.

Conclusions

Applying misleading results from metrics like CONNECT can have detrimental effects on natural ecosystems, because reductions in within-patch connectivity by human activities are neglected. Therefore, this paper provides evidence for the crucial need to consider the balance between within-patch connectivity and between-patch connectivity when calculating the connectivity of landscapes.

Nutrient mobilisation in the rhizosphere is driven by soil microorganisms and controlled by the release of available C compounds from roots. It is not known how the quality of release influences this process in situ. Therefore, the present study was conducted to investigate the amount and turnover of rhizodeposition, in this study defined as root-derived C or N present in the soil after removal of roots and root fragments, released at different growth stages of peas (Pisum sativum L.) and oats (Avena sativa L.). Plants were grown in soil columns placed in a raised bed under outdoor conditions and simultaneously pulse labelled in situ with a 13C-glucose-15N-urea solution using a stem feeding method. After harvest, 13C and 15N was recovered in plant parts and soil pools, including the microbial biomass. Net rhizodeposition of C and N as a percentage of total plant C and N was higher in peas than in oats. Moreover, the C-to-N ratio of the rhizodeposits was lower in peas, and a higher proportion of the microbial biomass and inorganic N was derived from rhizodeposition. These results suggest a positive plant-soil feedback shaping nutrient mobilisation. This process is driven by the C and N supply of roots, which has a higher availability in peas than in oats.  相似文献

Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae, the etiological agent of swine enzootic pneumonia, is an important pathogen in the swine industry worldwide. Investigations on pathogenicity mechanisms as well as current serological detection methods and the development of new recombinant subunit vaccines are hampered by the lack of known and well characterized, species-specific M. hyopneumoniae antigens. As a first step to solve these problems membrane and membrane-associated proteins were enriched from M. hyopneumoniae cells by Triton X-114 fractionation and further analyzed by 2D gel electrophoresis and Western blot analyses using convalescent sera. Two previously unknown immunogenic proteins were identified by quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry and database analyses as the conserved putative lipoproteins, Mhp378 and Mhp651. Both proteins were expressed as recombinant GST fusion proteins and reacted with sera from convalescent pigs. Coated as solid-phase antigen, Mhp651 showed a distinct cross-reaction only with Mycoplasma flocculare specific rabbit hyperimmune serum, whereas Mhp378 was only recognized by the positive control serum directed against M. hyopneumoniae, thereby indicating its species specificity.  相似文献
