The objective of the present study was to determine the dynamics of infestation of cattle and pasture by gastrointestinal nematodes in a mild humid environment in northwestern Spain. For this, infestation of pasture by free-living stages (L3), dynamics of faecal egg output, blood pepsinogen levels and worm burden in slaughtered animals were quantified. The results showed a high degree of annual variability, which was dependent on weather conditions. The seasons were clearly defined in the study area, with mild humid winters and relatively dry summers registered throughout the years of the study. Infestation of pasture by larvae varied from year to year, peaking during August in the first year, between August and December in the second year, and during October in the third year. The annual variation was mainly due to weather conditions, particularly the amount of rain in summer. The patterns of faecal egg output were similar in the first and third grazing seasons, with maximum levels observed in May/June; however, in the second year, the peak was reached in October. Blood pepsinogen levels increased from pasture turnout (March/April) until the end of the grazing season (November/December), reaching maximum values from August/September onwards. The nematode parasite species identified at necropsy were Ostertagia osteragi, O. lyrata, Cooperia oncophora, C. macmasteri, C. punctata and Trichuris ovis, with O. ostertagi and C. oncophora predominating. In faecal cultures, the following genera were also identified: Haemonchus, Trichostrongylus, Nematodirus, Bunostomum, Oesophagostomum and Strongyloides. There was a significant correlation (r=0.97, P<0.01) between worm burden (Ostertagia spp.) and pasture infestation (Ostertagia L3) 3 weeks prior to slaughter of the calves, and also between blood pepsinogen levels and pasture infestation by Ostertagia L3 (r=0.33, P<0.02). Correlations between worm burden and faecal egg output and between blood pepsinogen level and faecal egg output were not significant. The results obtained in the present study confirm that there is annual variability in the time-course of nematodosis in cattle, and demonstrate the importance of weather, particularly summer rainfall, in an Atlantic temperate environment. 相似文献

Purpose
Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum L.) is a medicinal plant with antidiabetic effects. Chromium has been related to better glucose tolerance in humans. The objective of this study was to determine whether tannery sludge could be used for Cr biofortification of fenugreek.Materials and methods
Soil was mixed with tannery sludge containing 6.03 g Cr kg?1. All Cr was in the form of Cr(III). Three treatments were disposed: control without sludge, and two treatments with 10 and 20 g sludge kg?1, respectively. Control and the 10 g sludge kg?1 treatments received NPK fertilizer to adjust the concentrations of major mineral nutrients to similar levels in all treatments. Soils were potted and planted with fenugreek. Plants harvested at the initial flowering stage were analysed for total Cr, Fe, Zn and Pb. Sequential soil extraction was applied to obtain operationally defined soil Cr fractions. Results and discussion
Total Cr in all treatments was below or within the allowable range for agricultural soils (100–150 mg kg?1). In control soils, most Cr was in the residual fraction (HF/HClO4 digest). Tannery sludge-amended soils incorporated most Cr into the moderately reducible fraction (oxalic acid/ammonium oxalate extract). In fenugreek shoots, Cr concentrations reached 3.2 mg Cr kg?1, a higher concentration than that reported for other leafy vegetables. Lead concentrations in plant shoots from this treatment were enhanced but hardly exceeded 1 mg Pb kg?1.Conclusions
Tannery sludge-amended soils containing Cr within the range of permissible concentrations can increase shoot Cr in fenugreek. Only sludge with low Pb concentrations should be used for Cr biofortification of fenugreek. 相似文献53.

• We studied the differences in branch characteristics along the stems of six different genetic entries of 20 year old Scots
pines (Pinus sylvestris L.) grown at different spacing (current stand density range 2000–4000 trees ha−1) in central Finland. Furthermore, we studied the phenotypic correlations between yield, wood density traits and branch characteristics.
All the genetic entries had Kanerva pine (plus tree S1101) as a father tree, whereas the mother tree represented Finnish plus
trees from southern, central and northern Finland. 相似文献

Setting the optimal length to be scanned in rows of vines by using mobile terrestrial laser scanners
Mapping the leaf area index (LAI) by using mobile terrestrial laser scanners (MTLS) is of significance for viticulture. LAI is related to plant vigour and foliar development being an important parameter for many agricultural practices. Since it may present spatial variability within vineyards, it is very interesting monitoring it in an objective repeatable way. Considering the possibility of using on-the-go sensors such as MTLS within an agricultural plot, it is necessary to set a proper length of the row to be scanned at each sample point for a reliable operation of the scanner. Three different row length sections of 0.5, 1, and 2 m have been tested. Data analysis has shown that models required to estimate LAI differ significantly depending on the scanned length of the row; the model required to estimate LAI for short sections (0.5 m) is different from that required for longer sections (1 and 2 m). Of the two models obtained, we recommend using MTLS for scanning row length sections of 1 m because the practical use of the sensor in the field is simplified without compromising the results (there is little variation in the model when the row length section changes from 1 to 2 m). In addition, a sufficient number of sampling points is obtained to support a map of the LAI. Linear regression models using as explanatory variable the tree area index, obtained from the data provided by the scanner, are used to estimate the LAI. 相似文献

The N contribution of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) to the succeeding corn (Zea mays L.) crop (FYC) is widely recognized. However, there is less information regarding the optimum N fertilization rates (ONR) for a second-year corn (SYC) following alfalfa. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the response of SYC after alfalfa to N fertilization under irrigated semiarid conditions. Three field experiments of SYC following alfalfa were conducted between 2007 and 2009 in Northeast Spain. Treatments included the combination of six N rates applied to FYC (0, 50, 100, 150, 200, and 300 kg N ha−1) with four N rates applied to SYC (0, 100, 200, and 300 kg N ha−1). In one of the three fields, high SYC yields (16.8 Mg ha−1) were obtained in plots that remained unfertilized during two consecutive years after alfalfa. On the other two fields, 81-100% of the maximum corn yields were obtained with application of 200 kg N ha−1 to SYC. Results suggest that the typical N fertilizer rates applied to SYC after alfalfa in irrigated semiarid areas (300 kg N ha−1) could be reduced by at least 100 kg N ha−1, with small or no economic penalties and important reductions in N losses. 相似文献

Morphological development and forage quality changes in crimson clover (Trifolium incarnatum L.) 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The development of efficient forage management and utilization is facilitated by a knowledge of the changes in nutritive value and patterns of dry matter (DM) distribution within plants. The objectives of this experiment were to determine the patterns of DM accumulation and the change in nutritive value during maturation of crimson clover ( Trifolium incarnatum L.), a cool-season annual forage legume adapted to mild winter areas and acid soils. Crimson clover was established on a Dystric Eurocrept soil with pH 5·4 in Galicia, north-western Spain, during three consecutive years (1990–92). Shoot samples were taken at approximately biweekly intervals in the spring and summer after autumn sowing, and were separated into stems, leaves and seed pods. DM accumulation, crude protein (CP) and acid-detergent fibre (ADF) concentrations and in vitro organic matter digestibility (IVOMD) were determined for each plant part at each stage. Average annual DM production at initial flowering was 4·2 t ha

An outbreak of paralytic poliomyelitis occurred in the Dominican Republic (13 confirmed cases) and Haiti (8 confirmed cases, including 2 fatal cases) during 2000-2001. All but one of the patients were either unvaccinated or incompletely vaccinated children, and cases occurred in communities with very low (7 to 40%) rates of coverage with oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV). The outbreak was associated with the circulation of a derivative of the type 1 OPV strain, probably originating from a single OPV dose given in 1998-1999. The vaccine-derived poliovirus associated with the outbreak had biological properties indistinguishable from those of wild poliovirus. 相似文献

PurposeMining activities generate large amounts of wastes that may contain potentially toxic elements (PTE), which, if released into the environment, may cause air, water and soil pollution long after mining operations have ceased. This paper describes the environmental relevance of efflorescences, topsoils and surface waters from the abandoned mine of Sierra Minera of Cartagena-La Unión, SE Spain. The exposure of the population to arsenic and the associated risk were also assessed.Materials and methodsA total of 10 topsoils and surface waters and 11 efflorescences affected at varying degrees by mining activities were studied. The total potentially toxic element content (As, Cd, Cu, Fe, Pb and Zn) was determined in all samples. In addition, the mineralogical composition of solid samples was determined by X-ray diffraction and some efflorescences were also analysed using a scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer. Finally, an arsenic-intake risk assessment was carried out, both as regards carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic effects and considering the total and the bioaccesible As content. Results and discussionThe study area is heavily polluted as a result of historical mining and processing activities, during which time great amounts of wastes were produced, characterised by a high PTE content, acidic pH and minerals resulting from supergene alteration. The supergene mineralogical assemblages include soluble metal salts, mainly sulphates, iron hydroxysulphates and iron oxyhydroxides, all of which form ochreous precipitates. Topsoil samples showed risk values and hazard quotients higher than the reference levels, particularly for children. In the efflorescences, these values were lower but still unacceptable.ConclusionsThe efflorescences are of significance for monitoring purposes because they are involved in cycles of retention release of hydrogen ions, sulphate and potentially toxic elements. In addition, in a semi-arid climate, such as the study area, these minerals contribute to our understanding of the response of the system to episodic rainfall events. In general, it was observed that the arsenic in collected samples represent a potential risk for human health through ingestion. |
