Echinochloa P. Beauv. is an important genus because many of its species are weeds infesting most paddy fields, which can reduce the rice grain production by up to 80%. A controversy exists about the taxonomy of the genus due to the high level of morphological variations found in these species. Cyhalofop-butyl, an aryloxyphenoxy-propionate herbicide, is used to control Echinochloa spp. in paddy fields, although differences in susceptibility were found between different Echinochloa species. E. colona was highly susceptible [ED50= 34 g of active ingredient (ai) ha(-1)]; very similar results were obtained with the remaining species. By contrast, E. oryzicola (170 g of ai ha(-1)) was less sensitive, with the herbicide symptoms appearing later. Because of this differential susceptibility, morphological and molecular studies were carried out. A morphological study, using 21 characters both quantitative and qualitative of spikelets and seedlings, was capable of clearly distinguishing closely related E. crus-galli plants (two populations), E. muricata and E. crus-pavonis, and E. oryzicola, E. utilis, and E. colona species. The resolution of Echinochloa species at the molecular level, based on RAPD analyses, was fairly consistent with morphological analysis results. Among the 60 primers screened, 21 primers exhibited polymorphic bands and produced a total of 136 RAPD markers. Of all the amplified fragments, 90 were found to be polymorphic. E. oryzicola and E. colona were clearly separated, and the RAPD analyses showed that both E. crus-galli populations were 100% related and 51% related to E. utilis, whereas E. crus-pavonis and E. muricata (73% similarity) appeared as being clearly separated from this group.  相似文献

Records of length of productive life, from first farrowing to culling, of 16,464 Large White purebred sows from SUISAG were studied using survival analysis. The major aims of the study were to model the risk of culling within parity and to assess the influence of exterior traits, such as the number of teats or feet and leg scores, on culling. Culling was concentrated at the first day after each farrowing or at the first day after weaning. Weaning itself was mostly between 21 and 49 d after farrowing, with an average weaning age of 35 d. Because of the definition of culling date used, there was practically no risk of culling from these periods. The culling rates at different periods suggested a modeling of the baseline hazard function within parity instead of over the entire productive life of the animals. A piecewise Weibull function and a simple graphical method to validate its adequacy were proposed for sow longevity analysis. The risk of culling increased with older parities (P < 0.001) and with decreasing litter size at weaning (P < 0.001). The exterior traits analyzed (number of teats, and feet and leg scores, on a scale from 1 to 7) had a moderate effect on the risk of culling compared with other factors but were still influential on survival, productive life expectancy, and annual replacement rate. Sows with less than 13 good teats had 1.35 times greater risk of being culled than sows with more good teats (P < 0.05). Sows with an X-O rear leg score of 2 had 1.4 times greater risk of being culled than sows with an intermediate score of 4 (P < 0.05). Sows at the optimum score of 4 for the size of inner claws of the rear leg had 0.83 times less risk of being culled (P < 0.01) than sows with scores of 2 and 3. Furthermore, when a phenotypic index for feet and legs was used to group these variables, the effect was highly significant (P < 0.001). Therefore, a means to improve longevity is through phenotypic selection of replacement gilts based on exterior traits: gilts with 13 or less good teats or with extreme feet and leg scores should be culled. From a genetic point of view, sows with the best value in the current index for exterior traits had a lower risk of culling (P < 0.01), and therefore, it is possible to obtain a response for sow longevity via indirect selection for exterior traits. From 1999 to 2003, the trend has been to eliminate extreme animals on exterior traits. This may partly explain the improvement of sow length of productive life longevity from 560 d in 2000 to nearly 710 d in 2003 observed in the data set.  相似文献

Genetic parameters of litter traits and their relationships with farrowing kinetics traits were estimated in a Large White population to examine the impact of selection for litter size on perinatal mortality and one of its main determinants, farrowing kinetics. Data were collected on 2,947 farrowings from 1,267 sows between 1996 and 2004. Litter traits included the number born in total (NBT), number born alive (NBA), and the number (NSB) and proportion (PSB) of stillborn piglets. Four farrowing kinetics traits were considered: farrowing duration (FD), birth interval (BI = FD/NBT), heterogeneity of birth intervals (SDNB = SD of the number of piglets born each one-half hour), and birth assistance (BA) during the farrowing process. Genetic parameters were estimated using restricted maximum likelihood methodology. All traits were analyzed using a mixed linear animal model including year x month and parity as fixed effects; the additive genetic value of each animal and the sow permanent environment were treated as random effects. To normalize their distribution, kinetics traits were Box-Cox-transformed. Low heritability estimates were obtained for litter size and mortality traits, which was in agreement with literature results (i.e., 0.10 +/- 0.02, 0.08 +/- 0.02, 0.19 +/- 0.02, and 0.14 +/- 0.02 for NBT, NBA, NSB, and PSB, respectively). Heritability values were also low for kinetics traits: 0.10 +/- 0.02, 0.08 +/- 0.02, 0.01 +/- 0.01, and 0.05 +/- 0.03 for FD, BI, SDNB, and BA, respectively. The genetic correlation between NBT and NBA was strongly positive (ra = 0.90). On both phenotypic and genetic scales, NBT was positively associated with stillbirth (ra = 0.45 +/- 0.11, rp = 0.38 for NSB; ra = 0.46 +/- 0.13, rp = 0.17 for PSB). Conversely, NBA had low correlations with SB and PSB. Number born in total was moderately correlated to FD (ra = 0.34 +/- 0.15) and BI (ra = -0.37 +/- 0.15). A stronger relationship was found between NBA and BI (ra = -0.49 +/- 0.13), whereas the relationship with FD was lower (ra = 0.16 +/- 0.17). Moreover, FD was strongly correlated with stillbirth (ra = 0.42 +/- 0.12 with NSB), whereas BI was nearly independent of stillbirth. Contrary to selection on NBT, selection on NBA appears to be a good way to limit the negative side effects on stillbirth. Moreover, selection on NBA would lead to a small increase in FD and a faster and more regular birth process than would be obtained by selecting on NBT.  相似文献

The effects of breed and season on performance and feeding behavior were studied during 76 lactations in multiparous Large White (LW; n = 17) and Creole (CR; n = 23) sows reared in a humid tropical climate. The experiment was conducted in Guadeloupe (French West Indies, latitude 16 degrees N, longitude 61 degrees W) between May 2002 and July 2004. Average daily ambient temperature was greater during the hot season than during the warm season (26.0 vs. 23.8 degrees C), but relative humidity was similar in both seasons (85% on average). The daily fluctuations of ambient temperature and relative humidity were similar for both seasons. At farrowing, BW was lower (187 vs. 265 kg) and backfat thickness was greater (40 vs. 22 mm) in CR than in LW sows (P < 0.01). Sows were offered feed ad libitum between the fifth and the 26th day of lactation. There was a breed x season interaction (P < 0.05) for ADFI. During the hot season the reduction of ADFI was more pronounced in LW than in CR sows (-1,100 vs. -300 g/d). Irrespective of breed and season, the daily number of meals was 9.0. The meal size and the rate of feed intake were greater in LW than in CR sows, respectively (555 g and 153 g/min vs. 390 g and 83 g/min; P < 0.01). The diurnal proportion of ADFI was greater in CR than in LW sows (0.60 vs. 0.41; P < 0.01). The reduction in ADFI in LW sows during the hot season was mainly related to a reduction in feed intake during the day rather than during the night (-1.3 vs. -0.2 kg; P < 0.01). Duration of standing was not affected by breed or season, and it averaged 120 min/day. This study confirms the negative effect of the hot season on feeding behavior of lactating sows. It also suggests a better acclimation to daily high temperatures and a greater heat tolerance in CR compared with LW sows, at least for eating behavior.  相似文献

An extract from in vitro cultures of Curculigo orchioides grown as bulbils in shake flasks, afforded two new glucosides of substituted benzylbenzoate - curculigoside C (3) and curculigoside D (4) - together with two known compounds - curculigoside A (1) and curculigoside B (2). Their structures were elucidated on the basis of spectral evidence, in particular by using 2D NMR methods. Their vasoactive properties were assessed in isolated rat aortic rings.  相似文献

The distribution of bisphenol F (4,4'-dihydroxydiphenyl-methane, BPF) was studied in female Sprague-Dawley rats. Pregnant and nonpregnant animals were gavaged with a single dose of 7 or 100 mg/kg [3H]BPF and were kept for 96 h in metabolic cages. The excretion of BPF residues occurred mainly in urine (43-54% of the administered dose), which was found to contain at least six different metabolites, and to a lesser extent in feces (15-20% of the administered dose). Sulfatase treatment and subsequent high-performance liquid chromatography analyses suggest that the major urinary metabolite (more than 50% of the radioactivity present in urine) is a sulfate conjugate of BPF. At 96 h, BPF residues were detectable in all tissues examined with the largest amounts in the liver (0.5% of the dose). In pregnant rats dosed at day 17 of gestation, BPF residues were detected in the uterus, placenta, amniotic fluid, and fetuses (0.9-1.3% of the administered dose). Large amounts of radioactivity (8-10% of the dose) were still located in the digestive tract lumen at the end of the study. After administration of a single oral dose of [3H]BPF, 46% of the distributed radioactivity was excreted in bile over a 6 h period. In rats, BPF and/or its metabolites very likely undergo enterohepatic cycling, which could be responsible for the relatively high amounts of residues still excreted 4 days after BPF administration. This bisphenol is efficiently absorbed and distributed to the reproductive tract in female rats, and its residues pass the placental barrier at a late stage of gestation in rats.  相似文献

The majority of known Toxoplasma gondii isolates from Europe and North America belong to three clonal lines that differ dramatically in their virulence, depending on the host. To identify the responsible genes, we mapped virulence in F(1) progeny derived from crosses between type II and type III strains, which we introduced into mice. Five virulence (VIR) loci were thus identified, and for two of these, genetic complementation showed that a predicted protein kinase (ROP18 and ROP16, respectively) is the key molecule. Both are hypervariable rhoptry proteins that are secreted into the host cell upon invasion. These results suggest that secreted kinases unique to the Apicomplexa are crucial in the host-pathogen interaction.  相似文献

Comparative analysis of the sea urchin genome has broad implications for the primitive state of deuterostome host defense and the genetic underpinnings of immunity in vertebrates. The sea urchin has an unprecedented complexity of innate immune recognition receptors relative to other animal species yet characterized. These receptor genes include a vast repertoire of 222 Toll-like receptors, a superfamily of more than 200 NACHT domain-leucine-rich repeat proteins (similar to nucleotide-binding and oligomerization domain (NOD) and NALP proteins of vertebrates), and a large family of scavenger receptor cysteine-rich proteins. More typical numbers of genes encode other immune recognition factors. Homologs of important immune and hematopoietic regulators, many of which have previously been identified only from chordates, as well as genes that are critical in adaptive immunity of jawed vertebrates, also are present. The findings serve to underscore the dynamic utilization of receptors and the complexity of immune recognition that may be basal for deuterostomes and predicts features of the ancestral bilaterian form.  相似文献

We report the sequence and analysis of the 814-megabase genome of the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus purpuratus, a model for developmental and systems biology. The sequencing strategy combined whole-genome shotgun and bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) sequences. This use of BAC clones, aided by a pooling strategy, overcame difficulties associated with high heterozygosity of the genome. The genome encodes about 23,300 genes, including many previously thought to be vertebrate innovations or known only outside the deuterostomes. This echinoderm genome provides an evolutionary outgroup for the chordates and yields insights into the evolution of deuterostomes.  相似文献
