Broad scale ecological edge-effects are most likely common in urbanized landscapes prone to wildfire, but most edge-effect studies have focused on fine scale processes such as shade tolerance and seed dispersal. Evidence has suggested a shift from pine dominated to oak dominated forests at the interface of developed land and natural areas in the Pinelands of New Jersey with the presence of a large edge-effect due to fire suppression. The goal of this study was to assess the location, magnitude and mechanism of the shift from pine to oak cover focusing on distance to human-altered land as the driver of fire suppression and forest composition changes. Overall, fire frequency and upland pine cover decreased sharply closer to human-altered land and affected up to 420 m of adjacent upland forest. Other factors, such as prescribed fire and wetlands configurations may play a role in the interior forest dynamics, but trends toward lower upland pine forest cover and higher upland oak cover near human altered were dominant. The areal summations of distance from altered land and the use of percent change thresholds for determining the scale and magnitude of large scale ecological edge-effects could be useful to managers attempting to maintain or restore forest types in areas of high wildland–urban interface.  相似文献

The use of salicylate rich willow bark is necessary for the economic fabrication of herbal drugs in the pharmaceutical industry. Natural derived salicylates can be used to medicate fever, rheumatic disturbances or headache. Clones from three willow species Salix daphnoides, Salix pentandra, and Salix purpurea were analysed for their salicylate content. All species showed a distinct salicylate profile. The major salicylate of S.?daphnoides and S.?purpurea was salicortin, whereas the main compound of S.?pentandra was 2′-O-acetylsalicortin. Clones of S.?daphnoides showed the highest mean salicylate content, followed by S.?purpurea and S.?pentandra. The variability within salicylates among species was higher than the clone variability. Also the seasonality of salicylates in willow bark was studied. The analysis revealed that after a peak concentration of salicylates in spring the content decreased during the vegatative season from March to August 2007. The lowest concentration was found August 2007. An increase of the salicylate concentration could be observed from August to October 2007. Specific clone selections and the determination of the optimal harvest time to gain highest salicylate contents are important for the economic fabrication of herbal drugs.  相似文献

The chronic impact of ring nematode (Mesocriconema xenoplax) feeding on grapevine (Vitis vinifera) was studied under controlled conditions. ‘Pinot noir’ grapevines were exposed to ring nematode or kept nematode-free for three growing seasons and vines were either grown in full sunlight, 15% of full sun, or partially defoliated to manipulate vine carbohydrate status. Whole plants were destructively sampled to assess the impact of ring nematode on whole plant biomass, carbohydrate, and mineral nutrient accumulation. Vine shoot growth and total biomass was unaffected by ring nematode in the first growing season, although reserves of nonstructural carbohydrates (NSC), P, K, and Ca in the roots and wood were reduced in all canopy management treatments. Vine shoot growth and total biomass were reduced by ring nematode in Year 2, and greater declines in reserve NSC and most mineral nutrients had occurred. Reserves of NSC were affected more than biomass or nutrients during the second year. During the third year of exposure to ring nematode, vines in the 15% sun treatment were dying (prompting an earlier destructive harvest), even though these vines had similar biomass and NSC reserves as the partially defoliated vines at the end of the second year. The demise of the 15% sun vines was associated with higher ring nematodes per unit of root mass, as compared to either full sun or defoliated vines. Therefore, predicting plant response to this nematode requires an understanding of nematode density per quantity of roots, not nematodes per unit of soil which is how plant parasitic nematodes are currently enumerated.  相似文献

Mixtures of peat and substrate clays are commonly used as growth media for horticultural plant production. A quality protocol for substrate clays defines a threshold value of active manganese (Mnact = sum of exchangeable and easily reducible Mn) in substrate clays of < 500 mg kg–1 to prevent toxic reactions of plants. This threshold value was tested in experiments with peat‐clay blends under various growth conditions, and nutrient solution experiments were additionally conducted to investigate the effects of silicic acid and dissolved organic matter on the occurrence of Mn toxicity. Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) and hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla) plants were cultivated in different peat‐clay substrates and in peat under different moisture and pH levels. The clays varied in their Mnact content from 4–2354 mg kg–1. The results of the substrate experiments reveal that a threshold value for Mn in substrate clays is not justified, as plants grown in all peat‐clay substrates did not develop any Mn toxicity even at high substrate moisture or low pH conditions which are known to increase the Mn availability. The extraction of active Mn did not well reflect the Mn concentrations in plant dry matter and substrate solution. As plants tolerated high Mn concentrations in the substrate solution compared to the nutrient solution without toxicity symptoms, the influence of silicic acid and dissolved organic matter (DOM) on Mn toxicity was characterized in a nutrient‐solution experiment. Manganese toxicity was clearly diminished by silicic acid application, but not by DOM. The former effect probably explains the tolerance of bean plants in peat substrates where high silicon concentrations in the substrate solution were observed. Peat‐clay blends even provided up to five times more silicon to plants than pure peat.  相似文献

Contamination of food and water by microorganisms from animal manure has become an important issue in public health. Escherichia coli O157:H7 is one of several emerging pathogens of concern. In this research, we studied how the self-heating, thermophilic phase of composting influenced laboratory-grown vs. bovine-derived E. coli O157:H7 mortality, specifically the relationship between temperature, time at temperature, and pathogen survival. Composting experiments were conducted in laboratory-scale bioreactors operated in three temperature ranges: 40°C to 50°C, 50°C to 60°C, and greater than 60°C. We measured the effects of temperature and composting time on E. coli O157:H7 mortality. Laboratory-grown E. coli O157:H7, inoculated into the initial compost material, were not detected after approximately 300 degree days of heating. In several experiments where compost temperatures did not rise above 50°C, an initial decline of E. coli O157:H7 with subsequent regrowth was observed. E. coli O157:H7 in compost materials from infected cattle were not detected after approximately 180 degree days of heating. Numbers of total coliform bacteria declined with temperature similarly to those of E. coli O157: H7. The results of this research provide information for reducing or eliminating E. coli O157:H7 in animal wastes.  相似文献

Relationships between climatic factors and C, N pools in particle-size fractions of steppe soils, Russia Many soils of the Russian steppe are characterized by high soil organic matter contents and similar parent material. Thus, they are suitable for investigations of a climatic impact on C and N pools. We sampled 10 topsoils of the zonal Russian steppe at 0–10 and about 50–60 cm depth intervals. After particle-size fractionation into clay (<2 μm), silt (2–20 μm), fine sand (20–250 μm) organic C and N concentrations were determined in bulk soils and fractions. The results suggest that especially the older organic matter of the subsoil (in the silt fraction) is correlated with climatic factors. Topsoils show less evidence for climatic influences on C and N pools. As the ratio of mean annual precipitation to potential evaporation (=N/V) increases, C/N ratios decrease in all fractions and, thus, in the bulk subsoil. Obviously the degree of soil organic matter alteration was more pronounced in the order Greyzem (N/V = 1.0) > Chernozem, Phaeozem (N/V = 0.89) > Haplic Kastanozem (N/V = 0.6) > Calcic (N/V = 0.34), and Gypsic Kastanozem (N/V = 0.32). The organic carbon contents of the bulk subsoil are highest in the subsoil of the Chernozem and Phaeozem, and decrease with increasing N/V ratio (i.e., increasing heat input and dryness) to the Calcic Kastanozem. This is accompanied by an increasing enrichment of organic carbon in the silt fractions (r = ?0.99 for the correlation of the C enrichment in silt with N/V).  相似文献

Fucoidans are algal polysaccharides that exhibit protective properties against oxidative stress. The aim of this study was to investigate different fucoidans from brown seaweeds for their ability to protect against iron-dependent oxidative stress (ferroptosis), a main hallmark of retinal and brain diseases, including hemorrhage. We investigated five new high-molecular weight fucoidan extracts from Fucus vesiculosus, F. serratus, and F. distichus subsp. evanescens, a previously published Laminaria hyperborean extract, and commercially available extracts from F. vesiculosus and Undaria pinnatifida. We induced oxidative stress by glutathione depletion (erastin) and H2O2 in four retinal and neuronal cell lines as well as primary cortical neurons. Only extracts from F. serratus, F. distichus subsp. evanescens, and Laminaria hyperborea were partially protective against erastin-induced cell death in ARPE-19 and OMM-1 cells, while none of the extracts showed beneficial effects in neuronal cells. Protective fucoidans also attenuated the decrease in protein levels of the antioxidant enzyme GPX4, a key regulator of ferroptosis. This comprehensive analysis demonstrates that the antioxidant abilities of fucoidans may be cell type-specific, besides depending on the algal species and extraction method. Future studies are needed to further characterize the health-benefiting effects of fucoidans and to determine the exact mechanism underlying their antioxidative abilities.  相似文献

The present study examined the morphological and physiological effects of amorphous diatomaceous earth against the stored product pestsS. granarius, T. molitor andT. confusum. Diatomaceous earth, namely Fossil Shield? and Dryacide? increased the mortality rate of this insects. After contact with Fossil Shield? the individuals ofS. granarius had significant lost of weight and reduced their water content respectively. This showed that silica dusts break the water barrier of the cuticle. However, it increases the transpiration rate of water across the cuticle and the insect died past several times through dehydration. As well, an addition of food affected the effectiveness of dusts against insects. A lot of stored product beetles will be able to produce metabolic water of feed substrates. This ability protects and weaves contrary to the loss of water. Diatomaceous earth’s can be effective primarily through the sorptive properties of the hygroscopic particles. One day after dust treatment a significant weight loss ofT. molitor pupae was recorded. The exposure to the silica dust Fossil Shield? caused partly an incomplete metamorphosis and death of the individuals. Pupae dipped in Fossil Shield? or abrasive aluminium dust and rolled for further five minutes, reduced not significant higher their weight as unrolled exuvial stages. The morphological analyses of treated insects under the Scanning Electron Microscope showed, that the dust covered the hole integument. Partly, the silica particles sunk into the cuticle. After application of Fossil Shield? at the cuticle of adults,T. molitor, did not show any wax layer. Also it could not be found once blocked by stigma of the mealworm. The dust particles accumulated around the respiration openings and they partly overgrew.  相似文献

Cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) is essential for the development of highly adapted and uniform hybrid varieties of carrot and other crops. The most widely used type of CMS in carrot is petaloidy, in which the stamens are replaced by petals or bract-like structures. We have developed a series of mitochondria-specific PCR markers to distinguish cytoplasms inducing petaloidy (Sp) and male-fertility (N). The markers target the atp1,atp6, atp9, orfB (atp8), nad6 and cob loci from the mitochondrial genomes of a diverse collection of male fertile and petaloid carrots. We report 14 primer pairs that amplify marker fragments from either Sp or N cytoplasms and three primer pairs that amplify fragments with length polymorphism. The amplification products span sites of insertions, deletions or recombinations adjacent to or within the coding regions of the targeted genes. The markers reported here are useful tools to identify the type of cytoplasm in cultivated carrot and to evaluate variation in the mitochondrial genomes within the genus Daucus.
