Summer water stress is the main limiting factor for Pinus pinaster growth under Mediterranean climate, but no information on limiting physiographic and climatic factors under Atlantic conditions is available for this species. We hypothesize that water availability during the active period limits P. pinaster growth, with stands nearby the Atlantic–Mediterranean boundary being more sensitive to summer drought stress. We analyzed the inter- and intra-annual climatic response of this species at ten monospecific stands in a transitional area between the Atlantic and Mediterranean biogeographical regions in Galicia, NW Spain. Mean sensitivity of radial growth consistently decreased with increasing elevation, and growth variation was quite similar for the earlywood, latewood or total ring widths, suggesting a strong intra-annual coherency of radial growth. Growth patterns were site dependent and geographically structured, with three groups of stands showing different climatic responses. As expected for sites suffering from summer drought stress, water availability enhances growth in western and southern Galicia, showing negative responses to maximum temperatures and positive to water availability. In northern Galicia, away from the Atlantic-Mediterranean boundary, water surplus in the rainy seasons negatively influenced growth. This was probably due to the combined effects of seasonal water-logging stress and the reduction of solar radiation associated with cloudiness, which would limit photosynthetic rates in winter and spring. Local variations of water availability strongly controlled the physiological processes that determine growth dynamics of P. pinaster in NW Spain, contributing to its geographical structure and contrasting sensitivity.  相似文献

Species for restoration forestry on degraded lands in the tropics are often restricted to a few well-known exotic timber species. This selection frequently leads to failed projects, as local people expect trees to cover a number of uses, not only timber. We studied local knowledge of the usefulness, scarcity and importance for wildlife of native tree species in central Veracruz, Mexico, a region with mainly secondary vegetation and remnants of tropical dry forest. Data were obtained from several workshops, in depth interviews of 40 key informants, field walks with informants, and botanical collections. Analysis included indices for cultural importance, scarcity and wildlife relevance. We documented 76 species in one or more of the categories, from primary, secondary, agroforestry and riparian habitats. Fabaceae was the most important family. All of the species were useful for humans, mainly for rural construction, food, fence posts and fuel. Two-thirds of the species were considered scarce though they were not necessarily rare??some were highly useful, overexploited species with populations insufficient for demand; this category included five of the ten most important species culturally. Also, two-thirds of the tree taxa were considered important for wildlife, especially species of Moraceae. The study shows that the local population is highly aware of the varying functions of trees in the landscape. However, few of the important species are available from regional nurseries. We propose a number of species for restoration forestry, agroforestry systems and enrichment plantings that would be valued by landowners.  相似文献

  • ? The vertical structure of Pinus sylvestris L. stands in Central Spain was analysed in order to evaluate their structural diversity. A comparison between two forests with similar ecological conditions but managed under different silvicultural systems was conducted in order to analyse changes in diversity at different stages of stand development. Height diversity was quantified using two non-spatially explicit indices (Shannon’s index and STVI) as well as two spatially explicit indices (Gadow’s differentiation index and the Structure complexity index). A new diversity index was then proposed, based on the sum of square roots of height differences (SQRI).
  • ? Correlations between all vertical structure indices were highly significant. All indices showed that height diversity was greater in the forest with the longer regeneration period and where less intensive thinnings were applied throughout the rotation. Diversity was highest in uneven-aged stands and in the period between the regeneration stage and the first thinning. Thinning from below accounted for the decrease in vertical structure complexity throughout the rotation in even-aged stands.

    Whereas the range size of endangered species is undoubtfuly useful to predict risk of extinction, the role of their life-history characteristics is much less clear, and their effects may depend on the nature of the threatening factors. Such factors, for instance, are known to be different on islands and on the mainland. We used phylogenetically based statistical analyses to study the relationships among conservation status, insularity, range size, and life-history traits in a clade of Western Palaearctic lacertids including insular and continental species. These lizards are ecologically similar, but they show wide variation in life-history traits and vulnerability to extinction. Insular species of a given size had smaller clutches than mainland ones. Degree of threat was best predicted by a logistic regression including range size, insularity, clutch size, and the insularity × clutch size interaction. On the mainland, but not on islands, threatened species had smaller clutches than non-threatened ones. On islands, small clutch size is probably an adaptive trait, and it might predispose certain species to extinction, but the intrinsic characteristics of such species remain unclear. However, small clutch size was a good predictor of extinction risk on the mainland, having evolved most frequently in late maturing species from montane habitats in which climatic conditions limit their reproductive output and increase their vulnerability to stochastic hazards or habitat fragmentation.  相似文献

    Without effective pain relief, rubber ring castration of lambs is acutely painful and can also produce chronic pain. The potential of novel, smaller rubber rings to reduce this pain substantially has been investigated. Three groups of eight 2-3 day old lambs, were castrated either with conventional rubber rings (cRR), or novel smaller rubber rings without (nRR) and with local anaesthetic treatment (nRR+La). Behavioural responses and chronic lesions indicative of pain were compared. No major reductions in behavioural responses were produced by castration with nRRs compared with cRRs, but injection of local anaesthetic did reduce these responses significantly. Lambs in all groups developed chronic inflammatory lesions but behavioural evidence of chronic pain was rarely seen. After 28 days, 6/8 necrotic scrotums had been shed by nRR+La; 4/8 by nRR and 2/8 by cRR lambs. The dimensions of rubber rings on necrotic scrotums, suggest that cRRs contracted to their un-stretched size before being shed, whereas nRRs did not. It is concluded that neither of these rubber rings exerted sufficient pressure on trapped nerves to produce anaesthesia rapidly and this may be explained by the physical properties of the tissues at the neck of the scrotum which support the ring.  相似文献

    ObjectiveTo compare the effects of xylazine on mechanical nociceptive thresholds in donkeys and horses.Study designRandomized, controlled, crossover, Latin-square, operator-blinded design.AnimalsSix 3.1 ± 0.89 year old standard donkeys weighing 145.0 ± 30.5 kg and six 9.6 ± 4.4 year old Thoroughbred horses weighing 456.0 ± 69.0 kg.MethodsEach animal received one of four doses of xylazine (0.5, 0.7, 0.9, and 1.1 mg kg?1), or acepromazine (0.05 mg kg?1) or saline solution (0.9%) intravenously and mechanical nociceptive thresholds were assessed over 90 minutes. The areas under the threshold change versus time curve values for 60 minutes (AUC0-60) post-drug administration were used to compare the effect of treatment. A 1-week interval was allowed between successive trials on each animal.ResultsAll doses of xylazine, but not acepromazine or saline, increased mechanical thresholds for up to 60 minutes. Xylazine-induced hypoalgesia was dose-dependent and corresponding AUC0-60 values for each treatment were not significantly different between donkeys and horses (p≥ 0.0697).ConclusionThe hypoalgesic effects of xylazine at four different doses were not different between donkeys and horses.Clinical relevanceXylazine induced a similar degree of mechanical hypoalgesia in donkeys and horses suggesting that similar doses are needed for both species with regard to analgesia.  相似文献

    Repeated prescribed burning is frequently used as a forest management tool and can influence soil microbial diversity and activity. Soil fungi play key roles in carbon and nutrient cycling processes and soil fungal community structure has been shown to alter with increasing burning frequency. Such changes are accompanied by changes to soil carbon and nitrogen pools, however, we know little regarding how repeated prescribed burning alters functional diversity in soil fungal communities. We amended soil with 13C-cellulose and used RNA stable isotope probing to investigate the effect of biennial repeated prescribed burning over a 34-year period on cellulolytic soil fungi. Results indicated that repeated burning altered fungal community structure. Moreover, fungal community structure and diversity in 12C and 13C fractions from the unburned soil were not significantly different from each other, while those from the biennial burned soils differed from each other. The data indicate that fewer active fungi in the biennially burned soil incorporated 13C from the labelled cellulose and that repeated prescribed burning had a significant impact on the diversity of an important functional group of soil fungi (cellulolytic fungi) that are key drivers of forest soil decomposition and carbon cycling processes.  相似文献
