In situ and in vivo digestibility experiments were conducted to determine the acceptability, digestibility, and safety of a return chewing gum/packaging (G/P) material mixture when fed to steers. In the in situ experiment, both ruminal and intestinal disappearances were measured. Two ruminally and duodenally cannulated steers, which were given free access to alfalfa hay (AH), were used in this study. Duplicate Dacron bags containing the G/P were incubated in the rumen for 0, 3, 6, 12, 24, and 48 h. After ruminal incubation, the 12-, 24-, and 48-h bags were placed in the duodenum and collected in the feces to determine intestinal disappearance. In situ ruminal DM disappearance was greater than 70% for all substrates tested at 0 h, indicating high solubility of the substrates in water, and began to reach a plateau after 12 h of incubation. Intestinal in situ disappearance was not different (P>.25) from zero. In the digestion trial, four ruminally cannulated steers (337+/-21.3 kg BW; mean +/- SD) were used in a 4x4 Latin square design with the following treatments: 0) 50% corn (C), 50% AH; 10) 45% C, 45% AH, 10% G/P; 20) 40% C, 40% AH, 20% G/P; 30) 35% C, 35% AH, 30% G/P. Steers fed G/P-containing diets had greater (P<.01) DMI than the control steers. Increasing the G/P resulted in a linear (P<.05) increase in DMI. Apparent DM digestibility tended to be higher (P<.10) for the G/P-containing diets than for the control. A quadratic effect (P<.05) on digestible DMI was observed, with greater (P<.01) digestible DMI values for G/P-containing diets (4.8 vs. 5.8 kg/d). Digestible organic matter and total nonstructural carbohydrate intakes followed trends similar to those of DM. Apparent aluminum digestibility of G/P-containing diets was not different (P>.13) from zero. The level of G/P in the diet had no effect (P>.2) on total VFA concentration or ruminal pH. There was a linear decrease (P<.01) in the molar percentage of isobutyrate and isovalerate in addition to a linear increase (P<.01) in butyrate and valerate with increasing levels of G/P. There was a quadratic effect (P<.01) on molar proportions of acetate and propionate and on the acetate:propionate ratio. Results of both experiments suggest that G/P may be fed to safely replace up to 30% of corn-alfalfa hay diets for growing steers with advantages in improving DMI and digestibility. 相似文献

Background
With the advancement of genotyping technologies, whole genome and high-density SNP markers have been widely used for genotyping of mapping populations and for characterization of germplasm lines in many crops. Before conducting SNP data analysis, it is necessary to check the individuals to ensure the integrity of lines for further data analysis.Results
We have developed an R package to conduct a parent-offspring test of individuals which are genotyped with a fixed set of SNP markers for further genetic studies. The program uses monomorphic SNP loci between parents and their progeny genotypes to calculate the similarity between each offspring and their parents. Based on the similarity of parents and individual offspring, the users can determine the threshold level for the individuals to be included for further data analysis. We used an F5-derived soybean population of ‘5601T’ x PI 157440 that was genotyped with 1,536 SNPs to illustrate the procedure and its application.Conclusions
The R package ‘ParentOffspring’ coupled with the available SNP genotyping platforms could be used to detect the possible variants in a specific cross, as well as the potential errors in sample handling and genotyping processes. It can be used in any crop which is genotyped with a fixed set of SNP markers.43.

This study investigated the relationship between follicle size (FS) and developmental competence of calf oocytes. Cumulus-oocyte-complexes (COCs) from follicles>8 (L-COCs; n=19), 4-8 (M-COCs; n=54), and 2-3 mm (S-COCs; n=155) were recovered from non-stimulated 1-4 months old dairy calves post mortem and ex vivo (laparoscopy), and in parallel from slaughtered adult cows from follicles of identical size categories [>8 (n=91); 4-8 (n=138); 2-3 mm (n=193)]. Morphologically intact COCs were subjected to in vitro maturation, fertilization, and embryo culture. Cleavage rate (CR; 46 h post-insemination=p.i.), rate of morulae/blastocysts (M/Bl; day 7 p.i.), and blastocysts (Bl; day 9 p.i.) were recorded. FS had no effect on the CR in calves. However, calf L-COCs yielded the highest rates of M/Bl and Bl compared with the two other size categories (P<0.05). In contrast, calf S- and M-COCs gave similar rates of M/Bl, whereas the proportion of Bl was lowest for S-COCs (P<0.05). This was almost identical to findings in cows, except that the CR was highest for L-COCs and M/Bl yields were lowest for S-COCs (P<0.05). There were no differences between calf and cows with regard to CR for the respective FS categories. L-COCs from calves and cows yielded similar rates of M/Bl and Bl, whereas calf S- and M-COCs yielded lower rates of Bl than S- and M-COCs from cows and a lower rate of M/Bl when S-and M-COCs were analyzed as one group (P<0.05). Whereas the CR was similar in calves and cows, calf COCs yielded lower rates of M/Bl and Bl (P<0.05). In conclusion, the results show that the developmental competence of calf oocytes is higher in those derived from follicles larger than 8 mm, and thus are almost equally as competent as cow oocytes derived from follicles of identical size. This suggests that calf oocytes acquire developmental competence within the large follicle, potentially due to a process similar to prematuration of the oocyte in the adult cow. It is proposed that procedures that facilitate prematuration, such as "coasting" following a preceding superstimulation, might increase the developmental competence of calf oocytes. 相似文献

Striga is an important parasitic weed causing substantial economic losses in cereal and legume crop production in sub-Saharan Africa. Integrated Striga management approaches such as a combined use of Striga resistant varieties and Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. strigae (FOS), a biocontrol agent of Striga, are an option to control the parasite and to boost sorghum productivity. Understanding host gene action influencing Striga resistance, with or without FOS treatment, is key to developing improved sorghum varieties with durable resistance and high yield. The objective of this study was to determine the gene action and inheritance of Striga resistance using genetically diverse populations of sorghum involving FOS treatment. Twelve sorghum parents selected for Striga resistance, FOS compatibility or superior agronomic performances were crossed using a bi-parental mating scheme. The selected male and female parents and their F1 progenies, backcross derivatives and the F2 segregants were field evaluated at three locations in Tanzania known for their severe Striga infestations using a lattice experimental design with two replications. The following data were collected and subjected to generation mean analysis (GMA): days-to-50% flowering (DFL), seed yield per plant (SYP) and number of Striga per plant (SN). GMA showed the preponderance of additive genetic action contributing to the total genetic variation in the evaluated sorghum populations. The additive genetic effect for DFL, SYP and SN, with and without FOS treatments, ranged from 72.02 to 86.65% and 41.49 to 95.44%, 75.62 to 91.42% and 71.83 to 91.89%, and 77.35 to 93.56% and 72.86 to 95.84%, in that order. The contribution of non-additive genetic effects was minimal and varied among generations. FOS application reduced DFL and SN and improved SYP in most of the tested sorghum populations. DFL of sorghum populations was reduced by a mean of 8 days under FOS treatment compared to the untreated control in families such as 675 × 654, AS435 × AS426 and 1563 × AS436. FOS treatment improved SYP with a mean of 6.44 g plant?1 in 3424 × 3993 and 3984 × 672. The numbers of Striga plants were reduced with a mean of 16 plants due to FOS treatment in the crosses of 675 × 654, 1563 × AS436, 4567 × AS424, and 3984 × 672. The study demonstrated that additive genes were predominantly responsible for the inheritance of Striga resistance in sorghum. Pure line cultivar development targeting reduced DFL, SN and high SYP in the selected populations may provide enhanced response to selection for integrated Striga management (ISM) programme. 相似文献

from seven selected cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp) parents. Twenty-one hybrids were generated from diallel crosses excluding reciprocals. Hybrids along with seven
parents were studied for combining ability and phenotypic correlations for seed yield and eight yield components. The result
indicated that the general combining ability (gca) and specific combining ability (sca) were significant for most characters indicating the importance of both additive and non-additive genetic components. Additive
gene action was important for eight characters except pod number, whereas non-additive gene action was not important for nodule
number and grain yield. Parental lines IT86D-716 and IT81D-985 were found to be good general combiners for grain yield and
other traits. The most promising specific combiners for yield and yield components were from crosses including IT87D-697-2 × IT86D-716,
IT88D-867-11 × IT86D-716, IT93K-624 × IT87D-697-2, and IT87D-697-2 × IT92KD-405-1. Significant positive phenotypic correlations
were observed between seed yield with pod length (POL), number of pods per plant (PON), and number of seeds per pod (SPD).
POL, pod number per plant, SPD, and grain yield were identified as the best selection criteria that could be used in cowpea

Indigenous crops also known as orphan crops are key contributors to food security, which is becoming increasingly vulnerable with the current trend of population growth and climate change. They have the major advantage that they fit well into the general socio-economic and ecological context of developing world agriculture. However, most indigenous crops did not benefit from the Green Revolution, which dramatically increased the yield of major crops such as wheat and rice. Here, we describe the Tef Improvement Project, which employs both conventional- and molecular-breeding techniques to improve tef—an orphan crop important to the food security in the Horn of Africa, a region of the world with recurring devastating famines. We have established an efficient pipeline to bring improved tef lines from the laboratory to the farmers of Ethiopia. Of critical importance to the long-term success of this project is the cooperation among participants in Ethiopia and Switzerland, including donors, policy makers, research institutions, and farmers. Together, European and African scientists have developed a pipeline using breeding and genomic tools to improve the orphan crop tef and bring new cultivars to the farmers in Ethiopia. We highlight a new variety, Tesfa, developed in this pipeline and possessing a novel and desirable combination of traits. Tesfa’s recent approval for release illustrates the success of the project and marks a milestone as it is the first variety (of many in the pipeline) to be released. 相似文献

Rice is the world’s second most produced staple cereal crop after wheat. Currently, rice production and consumption have steadily increased in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). To date, rice is the largest imported commodity crop in the region. The low productivity is due to a number of biotic and abiotic stresses, and socio-economic constraints. Among the biotic constraints, rice yellow mottle virus (RYMV) is the most important constraint to rice in SSA. In SSA, RYMV causes yield losses ranging from 20% to 100%. Various control strategies (host resistance, cultural practices and chemicals) have been recommended to manage RYMV epidemics. RYMV disease management through generic crop protection chemicals is not economic nor is it successful due to the presence of a large number of vector species disseminating the virus. In addition, cultural practices are ineffective against RYMV because the virus is spread by several agents, including insect vectors. The use of RYMV resistant cultivars remains the most effective, economic and environmentally friendly method for resource poor farmers. However, RYMV resistant varieties have not yet been developed and deployed in SSA. The aim of this review was to present the main components in the development of rice cultivars with RYMV disease resistance. The paper provides a comprehensive review on the genetic variability of the RYMV, its epidemiology and control measures, and the gene action responsible for RYMV resistance.
The review also summarises complementary genomic tools useful in RYMV disease resistance breeding.
Successful breeding of rice for RYMV resistance depends on the availability of genes for stable resistance, knowledge of the genetics of the host and, the availability of efficient phenotyping and pathotyping methods, and understanding of the genes involved and their pattern of inheritance. Information presented in the review can serve as a reference guide for rice breeding emphasising RYMV resistance, high yields and farmers-preferred traits. 相似文献
