Based on re-measurements (1999 and 2001) of randomly-distributed permanent plots within the city boundaries of Baltimore, Maryland, trees are estimated to have an annual mortality rate of 6.6% with an overall annual net change in the number of live trees of –4.2%. Tree mortality rates were significantly different based on tree size, condition, species, and land use. Morus alba, Ailanthus altissima, and trees in small diameter classes, poor condition, or in transportation or commercial – industrial land uses exhibited relatively high mortality rates. Trees in medium- to low-density residential areas exhibited low mortality rates. The high mortality rate for A. altissima is an artifact of this species distribution among land use types (24% were in the transportation land use). Based on a new tree population projection model that incorporates Baltimore's existing tree population and annual mortality estimates, along with estimates of annual tree growth, Baltimore's urban forest is projected to decline in both number of trees and canopy area over the next century. The measurement of gamma-glutamyl-beta-alanylhistidine isopeptide in the macromolecular fraction of various commercial meat extracts indicated that all of the commercial meat extracts tested contained the isopeptide, in concentrations ranging from 0.04 to 0.87 micromol/g of dry matter. This variation was suggested to be due to the differences between the processes of extraction and the differences in the initial amounts of carnosine. A positive correlation between the content of gamma-glutamyl-beta-alanylhistidine and the color of the macromolecular fraction was observed. These results suggested that gamma-glutamyl-beta-alanylhistidine is widely distributed in meat products and that the content can be used as an index of protein denaturation during the heating process. 相似文献

The wings apart-like (Wapl) protein is required to hold sister chromatids together in mitotic heterochromatin in Drosophila melanogaster. It is localized on the synaptonemal complex (SC), a meiosis-specific structure connecting one pair of sister chromatids to the homologous pair in mouse pachytene spermatocytes. The human Wapl is a cohesin-binding protein that facilitates cohesin's timely release from chromosome arms during prophase. The objective of the present study was to determine the subcellular localization of the mouse Wapl on female meiotic chromosomes at pachynema. The pachytene oocytes were isolated from foetal ovaries at 18.5 dpc and double immunostained with anti-synaptonemal complex protein 2 (SYCP2) and anti-Wapl. In the pachytene oocytes examined, mouse Wapl was colocalized with SYCP2 on the SC. Our results further implicated that Wapl might play a crucial role in meiotic chromosome remodelling at early meiosis. 相似文献

We report herein the presence of a lectin in the scleractinian coral Ctenactis (Fungia) echinata. The lectin bound preferentially to lactose, melibiose, and d-galactose. The purified lectin CecL was composed of several isolectins, and it was found to have a molecular mass of 67.4 kDa
via gel filtration. Glycopeptidase F-treated CecL showed a single band at 32.5 kDa. The mass/charge ratios of the reduced
CecL peaks were equivalent to half those of the native peaks. These results suggest that CecL is composed of two glycosylated
polypeptides linked by interchain disulfide bonds. In a biological activity test using a zooxanthellal culture (Dinoflagellate
Symbiodinium) clonally isolated from Fungia cf. fungites, CecL transformed the flagellated motile form of Symbiodinium into the nonmotile coccoid form, a form equivalent to the symbiotic stage. The activity of CecL on Symbiodinium cells was concentration dependent, and 100 μg/ml CecL arrested Symbiodinium cells in the coccoid form for 5 days. CecL also suppressed the growth of Symbiodinium cells, unlike the octocoral lectin derived from Sinularia lochmodes, which arrests Symbiodinium cells in the coccoid form but does not affect the growth of the coccoid. The effects of the Maillard reaction on the functional properties of dried egg white (DEW) were investigated. Maillard-reacted DEW (M-DEW) was prepared by storing sugar-preserved DEW (SP-DEW) at 55 degrees C and 35% relative humidity for 0-12 days. The M-DEW developed an excellent gelling property, and hydrogen sulfide production from heat-induced M-DEW gels decreased. Surface sulfhydryl (SH) group content of M-DEW increased while total SH group and alpha-helix contents decreased with increasing heating time in the dry state. Breaking strength, breaking strain, water-holding capacity, and hydrogen sulfide of heat-induced M-DEW gels significantly correlated with surface and total SH group contents in M-DEW. SDS-PAGE revealed that M-DEW proteins were polymerized in which covalent bonds were involved. The present study demonstrated that the Maillard reaction partially unfolds and polymerizes proteins of SP-DEW and, consequently, improved gelling property of SP-DEW under certain controlled conditions. 相似文献

Growth‐related changes in the histochemical properties and collagen architecture of the Musculus pectoralis were compared among Silky, layer‐type and meat‐type cockerels. Histochemical and immunohistochemical methods were used and collagen architecture was studied using scanning electron microscopy. The total amount of collagen present was also measured. The diameter of type IIB myofibers was similar or rather larger in the layer‐type birds compared with the meat‐type. The collagen content was generally low for 5–10 weeks across the breeds and then increased in the other breeds except for Silky. In the perimysium, the collagen bundles gradually increased in size and the density of the fibrils also increased during growth. At 30 weeks of age, the layer‐type birds showed compact collagen bundles while the meat‐type had loose bundles. The endomysial collagen network appeared relatively denser in the meat‐type chicks compared to the others at week 1. At 30 weeks of age, compact and felt‐like structure of endomysium was shown by Silky and layer‐type chickens, while the meat‐type showed a relatively loose arrangement of tissue in the endomysial collagen. From these results, it appears that the meat‐type chicken can produce a large M. pectoralis with many, relatively thinner myofibers and a relatively undeveloped form of intramuscular collagen structure. 相似文献

Cellular oncogenes of genomic DNA in 6 canine primary mammary tumors were screened by Southern blot analysis, using 7 oncogene probes. A canine genomic oncogene related to the human c-yes-1 oncogene was detected as abnormal bands in solid carcinoma genomic DNA digested with EcoRI, HindIII, HindIII-EcoRI, or HindIII-BamHI. Comparison was made between other tumor specimens and control specimens obtained from 4 clinically normal dogs--1 mixed breed and 3 Shiba Inu dogs (the same breed as the dog from which the solid carcinoma was obtained). These abnormal bands were 0.1 to 1 kilobase shorter than the normal gene. However, digestion of genomic DNA obtained from normal WBC of this dog also produced all of the abnormal bands as observed in digested DNA from the solid carcinoma tissue. Therefore, in this dog, the genomic DNA of all somatic cells from the ontogenic stage still had the abnormal sequences related to the human c-yes-1 oncogene, and it is possible that this abnormal structure may have some role (eg, as an initiator) in tumorigenesis or the progression of this tumor. 相似文献

The cathelicidin family is one of the several families of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs). A bovine myeloid antimicrobial peptide (BMAP‐28) belongs to this family. Recently, the emergence of drug‐resistant bacteria such as methicillin‐resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has become a big problem. AMPs are expected to be leading compounds of new antibiotics against drug‐resistant bacteria. In this study, we focused on the activity of BMAP‐28 against bacterial cell surfaces. First, we observed morphological change of MRSA caused by BMAP‐28 using a scanning probe microscope. We also studied activities of BMAP‐28 against adherence of S. aureus to fibronectin, collagen type I, collagen type IV. We confirmed whether BMAP‐28 can bind to lipoteichoic acid (LTA) of S. aureus. BMAP‐28 was indicated as damaging the cell surface of MRSA. In a particular range of concentrations, BMAP‐28 promoted adherence of S. aureus against fibronectin and collagens. It was revealed that BMAP‐28 and LTA of S. aureus bound with each other. Our study showed the potential of BMAP‐28 which can damage MRSA and interact with LTA of S. aureus but promote its adherence in some concentrations. This study provides new points of which to take notice when we use AMPs as medicines. 相似文献
