Larval growth and survival of marine finfish in mass seed production are affected by the nutritional value of live feeds such as rotifers and Artemia. Thus far, many studies have been conducted to develop effective methods for the enrichment of live feeds with essential fatty acids and vitamins. In this study, a practical method for enrichment of rotifers with zinc was investigated. Changes in the concentrations of other minerals when zinc was added to the rotifer-enrichment tanks were also studied. The mineral composition of rotifers and Chlorella after zinc enrichment revealed that the direct addition of zinc to the culture media was not effective because rotifers cannot efficiently accumulate waterborne zinc. The ability of Chlorella to absorb waterborne zinc is much higher than that of rotifers, and hence, zinc was pre-accumulated in Chlorella, which was then fed to the rotifers. The maximum zinc content of the rotifers was 585.0 μg g? 1 (dry matter) when the rotifers were enriched with zinc alone. This zinc concentration is comparable to that found in natural zooplankton. In rotifers simultaneously enriched with zinc and n?3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFAs), the zinc content increased, but the n?3 HUFA content did not. Therefore, separate enrichment with zinc and fatty acids was adopted. The zinc content of rotifers fed zinc-enriched Chlorella was significantly higher than that of rotifers fed unenriched Chlorella. After zinc enrichment, rotifers were enriched with fatty acids, and the docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and n?3 HUFA levels in rotifers were higher than the levels obtained after simultaneous enrichment with zinc and fatty acids. With regard to the concentration of other minerals in rotifers after zinc enrichment, the manganese content tended to decrease when the zinc content increased.The results of this study demonstrated that zinc enrichment of rotifers was successfully performed by using microalgae that had accumulated zinc, and the enrichment of rotifers with fatty acids was also achieved after the completion of zinc enrichment and before feeding the larvae. This method could be utilized for the enrichment of zooplankton with other minerals as well.  相似文献

Non-faecal phosphorus (P) was determined for large yellowtail to estimate a minimum available P requirement (Experiment  1) and to justify inorganic P supplementation in a fish meal-based diet (Experiment 2). In Experiment 1, purified diets with incremental P concentrations were fed to yellowtail (mean weight 917 g) at a feeding rate of 1.5% of body weight. The peaks of non-faecal P excretion appeared 5–6 h after feeding in fish fed more than 4.5 g available P kg−1 dry diet. Broken-line analysis indicated that the minimum available P requirement was 4.4 g kg−1 dry diet. In Experiment 2, a purified diet (PR) containing 6.5 g available P kg−1 and a fish meal-based diet with (F1) and without (F0) additional phosphorus were fed to yellowtail (mean weight 1.1 kg) at 1.5% (PR) and 2% (F0 and F1) feeding rates respectively. There was no significant difference in P excretion between fish fed the F0 (5.5 g soluble P kg−1 dry diet) and the PR diet. However, significantly higher (34.5%) amounts of non-faecal P excretions (7.4 g soluble P kg−1 dry diet) were found in fish fed F1 compared with the F0 diet. This suggested that there was an excess of dietary P in the F1 diet and that supplementation is not needed in fish meal-based diets for large yellowtail.  相似文献

ABSTRACT:   The feeding habits of albacore Thunnus alalunga (fork length: 48.9–76.2 cm, n  = 132) were examined from late spring to early autumn in relation to its northward migration in the transition region between the subtropical and subarctic fronts in the central North Pacific. Samples were collected at night using surface gill nets or during daytime pole-and-line surveys in 2001 and 2002. During May and June, albacore fed mainly on Japanese anchovy Engraulis japonicus , which accounted for 27.2%, 67.0%, and 45.5% of the total stomach contents by number ( Cn ), wet weight ( WW ), and frequency of occurrence ( F ), respectively, and secondarily on the subarctic gonatid squid Gonatopsis borealis ( Cn , 15.8%; WW , 10.8%; F , 28.8%). From July to September, albacore continued to depend on Japanese anchovy ( Cn , 48.2–52.8%; WW , 79.9–95.2%; F , 27.8–85.4%). These results corresponded well with the remarkable rebound of the Japanese anchovy stock since the 1990s. Gonatopsis borealis , the main squid prey from May to June, almost disappeared from the stomachs of albacore from July to September, probably due to the northward migration of this squid to subarctic waters in summer. The feeding impact of albacore on the Japanese anchovy stock in the transition region was conservatively estimated to be from 1400 to 2100 tons per day from late spring to early autumn.  相似文献

In fish culture, cannibalism, which induces critical damage, is separated into two types: type I, which occurs in early larval stages when size heterogeneity is low; and type II, which starts in later larval and/or early juvenile stages following type I when size heterogeneity is high. In type II, the cannibal's maximum prey size is limited by its gape size relative to the prey fish body size. Ratios of prey to cannibal body size changes are associated with allometric factors and feeding behaviour with growth. In a previous study on grouper, the maximal prey size was estimated morphologically (i.e., the relationship between gape size and body height). This method is very simple and useful; however, it does not consider allometric factors and feeding behaviour changes; therefore, it probably causes a large estimation error. To overcome this, we present a new method for estimating maximal prey size to determine the size ranges for size grading of longtooth grouper, Epinephelus bruneus, juveniles using predation experiments. It is shown that grouper type II cannibalism is affected by two factors; in early juvenile stages by morphology and in later (TL over 50 mm) by prey size selectivity.  相似文献

Eastern little tuna (ELT, Euthynnus affinis) is expected to see use as a novel aquaculture species due to its rapid growth and high economic value. In this study, closing of the complete life cycle of ELT in land‐based tanks was successfully carried out. Seed production of a first generation (F1) derived from wild‐caught ELT broodstock was conducted in 2010, 2011 and 2012. Survival percentages of F1 ELT at 365 days post hatching for the 2010, 2011 and 2012 year classes were 0.9%, 0.4% and 6.3% respectively. On average, F1 ELT were approximately 40 cm in total length and weighed 1500 g by the time they reached 1 year of age. Successful artificial induction of spawning was achieved in 1‐year‐old F1 ELT using a gonadotropin‐releasing hormone analogue (GnRHa). Induction of spawning was successful at the first administration of GnRHa in the 2010, 2011 and 2012 year classes. First spawning was observed at 4 or 5 days post implantation, which indicated that oogenesis and spermatogenesis progressed within 1 year of rearing in land‐based tanks. During spawning periods, the average number of fertilized eggs and the average number of hatched larvae per spawning event in the 2010, 2011 and 2012 year classes were 20,480 eggs day?1 and 177 larvae day?1, 39,423 eggs day?1 and 9347 larvae day?1, and 819,555 eggs day?1 and 674,445 larvae day?1 respectively. Therefore, it was concluded that both male and female ELT reared in land‐based tanks were capable of reproduction at 1 year of age.  相似文献
