Context

Corridors are usually delineated as areas of minimum cumulative resistance to movement through a resistance surface and characterized by their effective distance (accumulated resistance along the least-cost path). The results of these assessments depend on resistance values, which are typically derived from the inverse of habitat suitability models or from presence data of individuals within their home ranges, rather than from data on dispersal or exploratory movements.

Objective

Evaluate the extent to which corridor delineation and effective distance estimates may vary depending on whether home range locations or dispersal data are used to characterize species habitat selection and landscape resistance to movement.

Methods

We analyzed a large telemetry dataset (GPS collars) for the endangered Iberian lynx. We modeled corridors and effective distances three ways: (1) considering only GPS locations within home ranges, (2) considering only locations in dispersal or exploratory movements outside home ranges, and (3) considering all locations together.

Results

Delineated least-cost corridors followed similar trajectories and sometimes overlapped in the three models. The estimated effective distances were 42 % lower in the dispersal-based model than in the model based solely on home range use.

Conclusions

Models derived exclusively from locations within home ranges may provide lower connectivity estimates than models derived from dispersal locations, affecting estimates of resistance to move between habitat areas, even when the most likely movement routes are similar. Although dispersal data are costly to gather, they potentially provide more realistic assessments of the actual isolation of populations in heterogeneous landscapes.

The aim of the present work has been to study the possibility of obtaining modified gliadin films with improved water resistance and mechanical properties by means of promoting intermolecular covalent bonds between polypeptide chains. Prior to casting films, formaldehyde, glutaraldehyde, and glyoxal were used to cross-link proteins at concentrations ranging from 1% to 4% (grams per 100 g of protein). Mechanical properties (tensile strength and elongation at break), water vapor permeability, moisture sorption isotherms, and optical properties of the films produced were evaluated as a function of the cross-linker used. Experimental results showed that some properties of gliadin films were considerably modified. Cross-linking improved the water resistance of films, avoiding their disintegration. Their water barrier properties were also enhanced, but their moisture sorption properties remained unchanged. Formaldehyde imparted greater mechanical strength to films than glutaraldehyde or glyoxal, increasing tensile strength values 10-fold. Addition of the cross-linkers at concentrations in excess of 2.5% did not further improve the mechanical or barrier properties. However, modification with glutaraldehyde or glyoxal imparted an increasingly yellowish tint to the films.  相似文献

Ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH) films containing green tea extract were successfully produced by extrusion. The films were brown and translucent, and the addition of the extract increased the water and oxygen barrier at low relative humidity but increased the water sensitivity, the glass transition temperature, and the crystallinity of the films and improved their thermal resistance. An analysis by HPLC revealed that the antioxidant components of the extract suffered partial degradation during extrusion, reducing the content of catechin gallates and increasing the concentration of free gallic acid. Exposure of the films to various food simulants showed that the liquid simulants increased their capacity to reduce DPPH(?) and ABTS(?+) radicals. The release of green tea extract components into the simulant monitored by HPLC showed that all compounds present in the green tea extract were partially released, although the extent and kinetics of release were dependent on the type of food. In aqueous food simulants, gallic acid was the main antioxidant component released with partition coefficient values ca. 200. In 95% ethanol (fatty food simulant) the K value for gallic acid decreased to 8 and there was a substantial contribution of catechins (K in the 1000 range) to a greatly increased antioxidant efficiency. Kinetically, gallic acid was released more quickly than catechins, owing to its faster diffusivity in the polymer matrix as a consequence of its smaller molecular size, although the most relevant effect is the plasticization of the matrix by alcohol, increasing the diffusion coefficient >10-fold. Therefore, the materials here developed with the combination of antioxidant substances that constitute the green tea extract could be used in the design of antioxidant active packaging for all type of foods, from aqueous to fatty products, the compounds responsible for the protection being those with the higher compatibility with the packaged product.  相似文献

An antimicrobial active package has been developed to improve the safety and quality of wild strawberries, as well as extending their shelf life. The fruits were packed in equilibrium-modified atmosphere packaging (EMAP), and the effect on Botrytis cinerea growth and on the quality parameters of the fruit by the addition of different amounts of 2-nonanone, an antifungal volatile compound naturally present in strawberries, was investigated during storage at 10 and 22 degrees C. The temperature of 10 degrees C was chosen as the temperature used at points of sale, and 22 degrees C was chosen as the control temperature. Fungal growth was inhibited in all cases, possibly due to the synergistic effect of high CO2 partial pressures and the presence of the antifungal compound. Weight, soluble solids, titrable acidity, and anthocyanin losses were retarded by the presence of 2-nonanone. This effect was more pronounced as the 2-nonanone concentration was increased at both temperatures. Therefore, an active package that releases 2-nonanone inhibits fungal decay and delays the senescence of highly perishable wild strawberry fruit.  相似文献

Soil organic matter (SOM) is a key indicator of soil quality although, usually, detailed data for a given area is difficult to obtain at low cost. This study was conducted to evaluate the usefulness of soil apparent electrical conductivity (ECa), measured with an electromagnetic induction sensor, to improve the spatial estimation of SOM for site-specific soil management purposes. Apparent electrical conductivity was measured in a 10-ha prairie in NW Spain in November 2011. The ECa measurements were used to design a sampling scheme of 80 locations, at which soil samples were collected from 0 to 20 cm depth and from 20 cm to the boundary of the A horizon (ranging from 25 to 48 cm). The SOM values determined at the two depths considered were weighted to obtain the results for the entire A Horizon. SOM distribution maps were obtained by inverse distance weighting and geostatistical techniques: ordinary kriging (OK), cokriging (COK), regression kriging either with linear models (LM-RK) or with random forest (RF-RK). SOM ranged from 46.3 to 78.0 g kg?1, whereas ECa varied from 6.7 to 14.7 mS m?1. These two variables were significantly correlated (r = ?0.6, p < 0.05); hence, ECa was used as an ancillary variable for interpolating SOM. A strong spatial dependence was found for both SOM and ECa. The maps obtained exhibited a similar spatial pattern for SOM; COK maps did not show a significant improvement from OK predictions. However, RF-RK maps provided more accurate spatial estimates of SOM (error of predictions was between four and five times less than the other interpolators). This information is helpful for site-specific management purposes at this field.  相似文献

Mass transport of six food aroma components, D-limonene, n-decane, ethyl caproate, phenylethanol, 1-hexanol, and hexanal, through three sealable polymer films suitable for direct food contact, ultra-low-density polyethylene (ULDPE), ionomer (ION), and modified polyester (mPET), was analyzed by permeation experiments. Transport was characterized by the permeability coefficient and its two contributing factors, the diffusion coefficient (related to kinetics) and the solubility coefficient (related to equilibrium). The results show that ULDPE is more permeable to aromas that ION, which is more so than mPET. Differences in diffusivity are mainly responsible for barrier improvement. With aromas, nonpolar compounds permeate faster than polar ones through ULDPE. The effect of sorbed oil on the behavior of these materials as food aroma barriers was investigated. The sorption of oil apparently resulted in polymer swelling, increasing the solubility of aromas into the polymer matrixes. Little or no effect was found on the values of the diffusion coefficient. The permeability coefficient was affected as a consequence of changes in solubility. When aromas were compared, the transport of nonpolar penetrants showed a considerable increase while permeability values for the polar ones were either unaffected or even reduced. This behavior has been discussed in terms of polymer/oil/aroma compatibility.  相似文献
