The effects of sheep grazing on the development and production of heather swards were studied over a period of 3 years in an experiment in which sheep numbers were adjusted to remove 0, 40% or 80% by weight of the current season's shoots in summer and in autumn. The number of shoots grazed increased with the level of grazing but not in direct proportion. The length of shoot grazed was greater at the 80% level of grazing. Heavy autumn grazing was associated with frequent uprooting and breaking off of shoots and with a high incidence of shoots grazed down to the previous season's wood. The siting of new season's shoots was influenced by the amount of shoot length grazed in the previous season. Grazing behaviour of sheep within a plot was affected by variation in heather cover with the sheep showing a tendency to graze near bare areas. After 3 years of grazing, standing crop was reduced by both levels of grazing whether in summer or autumn. New shoot production was unaffected on plots which had had the 40% level of shoot removal but was reduced by half on plots which had had the 80% level of shoot removal whether in summer or autumn. A clipping experiment was also carried out where 0, 40% or 80% of the length of current shoots was removed in May, early July and Septeinber. Standing crop was unaffected by May clipping but was reduced on plants with a history of 80% shoot removal in July or September. New shoot production was only reduced on clipped plants which had been subjected to 80% removal in September. The role of overwintering green shoots and carbohydrate reserves in the support of new shoot growth was considered. The implications of the results in relation to heather management are discussed.  相似文献

Perennial ryegrass/white clover pastures grazed by sheep and receiving either no fertilizer N (No) or 120 kg N ha?1 year?1 (N0) were maintained with surface heights of 2·5, 3·5 and 5·0 cm for over four years. The treatments were replicated. The white clover (WC) population was greatest in the N0treatment, and declined during the study. Between-year variation in WC was negatively related to rainfall and positively related to temperature, WC as a proportion of the total plant population decreased during the summer in the Nl treatment. The perennial ryegrass (PRG) population was greater in the Nl treatment, declined during the study and both within and between years was positively related to temperature. The population density of the unsown grasses was highest in the N-fertilized treatment and in the swards maintained at the lowest heights (these treatments also had the highest stocking rate); it increased during the study, within-years being positively related to temperature and between-years being positively related to rainfall. The WC stolon extension rate was largely unaffected by N fertilizer application and was greatest in the taller swards. Leaf appearance rate was unaffected by N fertilizer application and sward height; it was positively related to temperature and negatively related to rainfall. Branching rate was greater in the N0 treatment with significant sward height effects confined to a negative relationship with local sward height within treatment plots on one occasion; it was negatively related to rainfall. The ground level red:far red light ratio was negatively related to local sward height. The total live weight of sheep carried in the No treatments was 0·7 of that in the N1 treatments. Expected photomorphogenic responses by we were confined to stolon extension. It was concluded that on the poorly drained clay-loam soil used in this study the effects of sheep, in interaction with climatic factors, had an overriding effect on clover branching rate and the ultimate species composition.  相似文献

Measurements of sward surface height and of the ratio of light at 660 and 730 nm reflected from a pasture canopy were correlated with measurements of leaf area index (LAI) and herbage mass of two ryegrass dominant swards. Both pastures were continuously stocked by sheep to maintain a range of sward heights from 2 to 6 cm corresponding approximately to LAI 2 to 5.
Sward height appeared to be linearly related to both LAI and herbage mass, whereas 660/730 reflectance displayed a non-linear relationship with both parameters. The accuracy of prediction by the two methods over the range LAI 1 to 3 or herbage mass 700 to 1800 kg DM ha-1 was very similar. However, reflectance measurements could not be used above about LAI 3–4 and to this extent were less useful. Nevertheless, reflectance measurements have a potential advantage in their ability to sample large areas of pasture very quickly.  相似文献

The effects of sheep grazing, with or without a 7-week rest period before ear emergence, on species balance in four perennial ryegrass/white clover swards were assessed.
Swards of an early (Aurora) or a late (Melle) flowering ryegrass were grown with either a small-leaved (Kent) or a medium-leaved (Milkanova) clover.
The clover lamina, expressed as a proportion of the total lamina mass, was greater with Kent than Milkanova. This proportion was not changed by resting the Aurora (earlier rest) swards, but was increased by resting the Melle (later rest) swards. A greater proportion of the clover lamina mass was near the top of the canopy in the Milkanova than in the Kent swards, and during the summer than in spring or autumn. The densities of clover growing points were greater in the Kent than the Milkanova swards and were increased by the late rest period. This effect persisted over the winter.
Stocking density was higher on the Kent than the Milkanova swards. The effects of the two rest periods, and the variety combinations, on pasture composition are interpreted as being principally a result of the differences in temperature between the earlier and later rest periods and of the different relationships between temperature and the growth of ryegrass and clover. Varietal characteristics, such as the vertical distribution of laminae, were also shown to be important.  相似文献

A simulation model (AUSPIG) was used to predict the effect of an increase in piglet deaths, and a reduction in growth rate and an increase in feed conversion ratio of grower pigs on the profitability of two herds representative of the Australian pig industry caused by the introduction of transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGE) into those herds. For each herd, mortality rates for piglets under 1 week of age of 50% and 95% were assumed to represent a 'moderate' and a 'severe' outbreak, respectively. A reduction in net revenue of 70% was predicted to occur in the 6 months after a 'moderate' outbreak of TGE (100% for a 'severe' outbreak). This represents a total loss of between $260 and $330 per breeding sow in the 12 months after infection with the TGE virus. The likely financial impact of an outbreak of TGE on an Australian piggery is substantial and should be considered when addressing quarantine issues.  相似文献

Analyses of fossil mammal faunas from 2945 localities in the United States demonstrate that the geographic ranges of individual species shifted at different times, in different directions, and at different rates in response to late Quaternary environmental fluctuations. The geographic pattern of faunal provinces was similar for the late Pleistocene and late Holocene, but differing environmental gradients resulted in dissimilar species composition for these biogeographic regions. Modern community patterns emerged only in the last few thousand years, and many late Pleistocene communities do not have modern analogs. Faunal heterogeneity was greater in the late Pleistocene.  相似文献
