Understanding the suppression of ferroelectricity in perovskite thin films is a fundamental issue that has remained unresolved for decades. We report a synchrotron x-ray study of lead titanate as a function of temperature and film thickness for films as thin as a single unit cell. At room temperature, the ferroelectric phase is stable for thicknesses down to 3 unit cells (1.2 nanometers). Our results imply that no thickness limit is imposed on practical devices by an intrinsic ferroelectric size effect.  相似文献

The Maternal-Effect Sterile (MES) proteins are essential for germline viability in Caenorhabditis elegans. Here, we report that MES-4, a SET-domain protein, binds to the autosomes but not to the X chromosomes. MES-2, MES-3, and MES-6 are required to exclude MES-4 and markers of active chromatin from the X chromosomes. These findings strengthen the emerging view that in the C. elegans germ line, the X chromosomes differ in chromatin state from the autosomes and are generally silenced. We propose that all four MES proteins participate in X-chromosome silencing, and that the role of MES-4 is to exclude repressors from the autosomes, thus enabling efficient repression of the Xs.  相似文献

The structure of BPSL1549, a protein of unknown function from Burkholderia pseudomallei, reveals a similarity to Escherichia coli cytotoxic necrotizing factor 1. We found that BPSL1549 acted as a potent cytotoxin against eukaryotic cells and was lethal when administered to mice. Expression levels of bpsl1549 correlate with conditions expected to promote or suppress pathogenicity. BPSL1549 promotes deamidation of glutamine-339 of the translation initiation factor eIF4A, abolishing its helicase activity and inhibiting translation. We propose to name BPSL1549 Burkholderia lethal factor 1.  相似文献

Carotenoids have potent antioxidant activity as well as therapeutic value, and their formation has been seen to be induced in algae by stress, including high-salt culture conditions. A differential profiling of carotenoids was conducted using a targeted metabolomics approach with accurate mass data generated by liquid chromatography-electrospray-time-of-flight (LC-ESI-TOF) mass spectrometry followed by postacquisition filtering based on isotope patterns and mass defects to detect carotenoids up-regulated in Scenedesmus sp. exposed to high-salt conditions. Algal cultures treated with high concentrations of sodium acetate or sodium chloride were found to cause an increase in various carotenoids. On the basis of differential analysis, astaxanthin and canthaxanthin increased upon salt treatment. Astaxanthin, in its free form and as fatty acid esters, was seen to increase in Scenedesmus sp. using accurate mass MS. A few other carotenoid compounds increased upon salt treatment, including echinenone and adonirubin, involved in the pathway of astaxanthin biosynthesis from β-carotene, as well as isomers of astaxanthin and canthaxanthin. A time course study of acetate treatment was done to observe the time-dependent up-regulation of carotenogenesis.  相似文献

Two known glycosides and a novel trisaccharide fatty acid ester were isolated from the n-butanol-soluble fraction of the fruits of Morinda citrifolia (noni). Structure determination was carried out by spectral techniques such as MS, IR, NMR, and 2D-NMR. The novel trisaccharide fatty acid ester was elucidated as 2, 6-di-O-(beta-D-glucopyranosyl)-1-O-octanoyl-beta-D-glucopyranose. The ultrafine composite fibers consisting of lauric acid (LA) and polyamide 6 (PA6) as form-stable phase change materials (PCMs), were prepared successfully by electrospinning. The effect of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on the structural morphology, phase change behaviors, thermal stability, flammability and thermal conductivity properties of electrospun LA/PA6 composite fibers was investigated by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analyses (TGA), microscale combustion calorimeter (MCC) and melting/freezing times measurements, respectively. SEM observations indicated that the LA/PA6 and LA/PA6/CNTs composite fibers possessed flat and ribbon-shaped morphologies, but the neat PA6 fibers had cylindrical shape with smooth surface; and the average fiber diameters for LA/PA6 composite fibers decreased generally with the addition of CNTs. DSC measurements indicated that the heat enthalpies of the composite fibers were lower that that of neat LA powders, while the amounts of CNTs had no appreciable effect on the phase change temperatures and heat enthalpies of the composite fibers. TGA results showed that the addition of CNTs increased the onset thermal degradation temperature, maximum weight loss temperature and charred residue at 700 °C of the composite fibers, attributed to the improved thermal stability properties. It could be found from MCC tests that there were two-step combustion processes for composite fibers, and corresponded respectively to combustion of LA and polymer chains (PA6) in composite fibers. The addition of CNTs reduced the peak of heat release rate (PHRR) of electrospun composite fibers, contributing to the decreased flammability properties. The improved thermal conductivity performances of LA/PA6/CNTs composite fibers was also confirmed by comparing the melting/freezing times of LA/PA6 composite fibers with that of neat LA powders. The results from the SEM observation showed that the composite fibers had no appreciable variations in shape and diameter after heating/cooling processes.  相似文献
