This research examined the effect of initial stocking density and feeding regime on larval growth and survival of Japanese flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus. Larval rearing trials were conducted in nine 50‐L tanks with different initial stocking densities combined with different feed rations (20 larvae/L with standard feed ration [LD], 80 larvae/L with standard feed ration [HD], and 80 larvae/L with four times the standard feed ration [HD+]). Larvae were stocked on 0 days posthatch (DPH) following hatching of the fertilized embryos. Larval total length (TL), survival rates, and final densities were observed on larval settlement (32 DPH) to evaluate larval rearing performance. At 32 DPH, there were no significant differences (p > .05) in TL or survival rates between the LD (46.5 ± 17.0%) and HD+ (40.3 ± 9.4%). The TL and survival rate of HD (23.1 ± 3.5%) were significantly lower than that of LD and HD+ (p < .05). However, the larval density of HD was significantly higher than that of LD (p < .05). HD+ achieved the best larvae production (32.27 ± 7.51 larvae/L), supported by sufficient food source, high water exchange, and proper water quality management (routine siphoning, surface skimming). The larval‐rearing protocols and larval development from hatching to metamorphosis is described in detail, with corresponding photographs taken during the experiment.  相似文献

This paper investigates how Food Security (FS) is enacted in a southern region of Italy, characterized by high rates of mafias-related activity, arguing for the inclusion in the research of socio-cultural features and power relationships to explain how Alternative Food Networks (AFNs) can facilitate individual empowerment and community resilience. In fact, while FS entails legality and social justice, AFNs are intended as ‘instrumental value’ to reach the ‘terminal value’ of FS within an urban community in Sicily, as well as the space where citizens can act their individual and collective political food choices. Building on the social psychology literature and on ecologic-psychopolitical models (Christens and Perkins in J Commun Psychol 36(2):214–231, 2008), we discuss the case of Addiopizzo, a citizen project promoting the legality of their AFNs through the rejection of the payment of the pizzo (the protection money asked by racket) in the local food chain. The aim is to problematize the extent to which FS is able to re-localize ‘legal’ food in the market. This was done by reconnecting citizens to their space and territory in a socio-cultural context at risk where agro-food producers, retailers and consumers are not free to fully enact their citizenship agency because of a widespread illegal structure. The research findings show that Addiopizzo project enables citizens to act their social power: agro-food producers and retailers by subscribing to formal requirements based on values that reject racket; consumers by purchasing Addiopizzo labelled products; individuals and groups by participating further open-to-the-public activities that promote everyday politically oriented behaviour. The citizen empowerment and community resilience can be exerted within AFNs as they are interconnected paths of reflexivity and social learning within social adaptation. The paper concludes by advocating the role of urban communities as a pivotal agent to maintain positive social adaptations, where AFNs work as a socio-cultural synthesis of traditional and alternative producer–consumer ways of interaction, which are embodied in the FS value.  相似文献

Landscape ecology has provided valuable insights in the relations between spatial structure and the functioning of landscapes. However, in most global scale environmental assessments the representation of landscapes is reduced to the dominant land cover within a 0.5 degree pixel, disregarding the insights about the role of structure, pattern and composition for the functioning of the landscape. This paper discusses the contributions landscape ecology can make to global scale environmental assessments. It proposes new directions for representing landscape characteristics at broad spatial scales. A contribution of landscape ecologists to the representation of landscape characteristics in global scale assessments will foster improved information and assessments for the design of sustainable earth system governance strategies.  相似文献

Wounds on the limbs of horses are notoriously difficult to heal, with over production of TGFβ1 thought to be responsible for excessive scarring; in contrast, wounds in the oral cavity heal rapidly with minimal scarring. This experiment aimed to determine the effect of TGFβ1 on the production of mRNA and proteins for various extracellular matrix components by two equine fibroblast cell lines isolated from the oral mucosa and distal limb. Fibronectin mRNA was up-regulated by TGFβ1 in the limb but not the oral cells. TGFβ1 increased the ratio of mRNA for collagen types I-III for the oral cells only. mRNA expression for TGFβ receptors-I and -II was significantly lower in limb fibroblasts, and treatment of either cell line with TGFβ1 down-regulated mRNA expression for both receptors. These differences may account for the improved healing seen in oral wounds compared to the excessive scarring seen in limb wounds.  相似文献

  • ? Nitrogen (N) exists in the soil in a variety of different forms and thus plants may avoid competition by taking up N as different chemical forms.

This study examined the uptake of nitrate, ammonium and glycine by three co-occurring species of Eucalyptus (E. obliqua, E. radiata and E. rubida) from dry sclerophyll forest in south-eastern Australia. Species preference for N forms was determined by measuring uptake of glycine, nitrate and ammonium from 15N-labelled solutions containing equimolar 100 μmol L? concentrations of all three N forms. KCl extracts were used to assess the relative abundance of the different forms of N in the soil’s exchangeable pool.
  • ? KCl extracts of soil indicated that amino acids comprised 30–40% of the soluble non-protein N, while ammonium varied from 10–70% and nitrate from 5–70%. In all species, ammonium was the preferred source of nitrogen and was taken up 2.5–4.5 times faster than glycine, and 30–50 times faster than nitrate. Species did not differ in preference for N-forms (species*N-form interaction, not significant).
  • ? This study indicates that nitrate, ammonium and amino acids are all present in soil, and thus there is the potential for niche differentiation based on chemical forms of N.
