Primitive and exotic accessions of cotton are potential sources of favorable alleles for genetic improvement, enriching diversity in the genetically constricted gene pool of elite cultivars. Three exotic accessions of cotton (MDN101, MDN063 and MDN257), collected from different parts of Central America and converted to day-neutral flowering; and four elite cultivars (PD94042, DES56, PMHS200 and Acala Maxxa) representing the US cotton gene pool were used as parents to create experimental populations. The corresponding F2 and F2:3 progenies of these populations were grown in two successive years (i.e., some in 2011–2012, some in 2012–2013) and phenotypes were scored in both F2 and F2:3 progenies in all 3 years (2011–2012–2013). These populations were screened with 113 polymorphic microsatellite markers selected from “hotspots” for fiber quality quantitative trait loci in the cotton genome and single marker analyses were performed to identify significant associations of the markers with six fiber quality traits. A total of 134 nominal marker-trait associations were identified, among which 15 were significant after Bonferroni correction for multiple comparisons. In 67 of 134 nominal associations and 4 of 15 significant associations, the exotic parents contributed favorable alleles to multiple backgrounds and for multiple traits, in addition to the traits for which they were selected. These results indicate that utilization of exotic and wild accessions of cotton is useful in introducing favorable alleles into the cultivated cotton gene pool for genetic improvement. 相似文献

Selected tropical Acacia species are used extensively for short-rotation plantation forestry in many parts of Asia and, to a limited degree, in Australia. We explored leaf-level photosynthetic activity and leaf water potential (Ψleaf) of three field-grown Acacia tree species (aged between 7 and 18 months) in contrasting wet–dry tropical plantations in southern Vietnam and northern Australia. Light-saturated photosynthetic rate (A1500) declined throughout the morning and early afternoon in the dry season; in the wet season, levels remained high and relatively constant throughout most of the day. Maximum daily A1500 at 09:00 ranged from 22.2 μmol?m?2?s?1 in the wet to 10.4 μmol?m?2?s?1 in the dry season. At both locations, trees were able to extract soil water such that pre-dawn leaf water potential (Ψpd) remained>?1.5?MPa even at the end of the dry season. Stomatal conductance to water vapour (gs) did not respond to decreasing Ψleaf during the wet season but was sensitive to changes in Ψleaf in the dry season. Species comparisons of the relationships between A1500 and Ψleaf revealed different strategies to balance carbon uptake and water loss in a wet–dry environment. Acacia crassicarpa and A. mangium regulated Ψleaf to a greater extent than the A. mangium×A. auriculiformis hybrid such that ?Ψleaf (determined as Ψpd?midday Ψleaf) was unaffected by season. This result suggests that the hydraulic regulation of tree water status varies amongst young tropical Acacia species. From a management perspective, for Acacia species that tend to strongly regulate water loss in environments with an extended dry season, overall productivity at the end of a rotation may be less than for species that prioritise carbon gain. 相似文献

Fire management for biodiversity conservation: Key research questions and our capacity to answer them 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Knowing how species respond to fire regimes is essential for ecologically sustainable management. This axiom raises two important questions: (1) what knowledge is the most important to develop and (2) to what extent can current research methods deliver that knowledge? We identify three areas of required knowledge: (i) a mechanistic understanding of species’ responses to fire regimes; (ii) knowledge of how the spatial and temporal arrangement of fires influences the biota; and (iii) an understanding of interactions of fire regimes with other processes. We review the capacity of empirical research to address these knowledge gaps, and reveal many limitations. Manipulative experiments are limited by the number and scope of treatments that can be applied, natural experiments are limited by treatment availability and confounding factors, and longitudinal studies are difficult to maintain, particularly due to unplanned disturbance events. Simulation modelling is limited by the quality of the underlying empirical data and by uncertainty in how well model structure represents reality. Due to the constraints on large-scale, long-term research, the potential for management experiments to inform adaptive management is limited. Rather than simply recommending adaptive management, we define a research agenda to maximise the rate of learning in this difficult field. This includes measuring responses at a species level, building capacity to implement natural experiments, undertaking simulation modelling, and judicious application of experimental approaches. Developing ecologically sustainable fire management practices will require sustained research effort and a sophisticated research agenda based on carefully targeting appropriate methods to address critical management questions. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To examine the angioarchitecture of the ciliary body in the West Indian manatee (Trichechus manatus), through the use of three-dimensional reconstruction. PROCEDURE: Specimens from West Indian manatee were preserved in 10% buffered formalin, embedded in paraffin, serial sectioned and stained by Masson trichrome for light microscopic three-dimensional reconstruction and evaluation. RESULTS: The network of blood vessels in the ciliary processes of the West Indian manatee is fed by the major arterial circle that lies mostly near the base of the iris. The branching arterioles give rise to a capillary-sinusoidal bed that extends internally along each process, emptying into two sets of veins, one being elevated. The elevated and nonelevated veins join posteriorly before emptying into the choroidal venous system. CONCLUSIONS: The angioarchitecture of the ciliary body of the West Indian manatee is clearly unique when compared to those previously examined in land mammals. Three-dimensional reconstruction of paraffin sections is an effective means to evaluate vascular patterns in ocular specimens, especially those unavailable for corrosion casting. 相似文献

Agroforestry systems are widely practiced in tropical forests to recover degraded and deforested areas and also to balance the global carbon budget. However, our understanding of difference in soil respiration rates between agroforestry and natural forest systems is very limited. This study compared the seasonal variations in soil respiration rates in relation to fine root biomass, microbial biomass, and soil organic carbon between a secondary forest and two agroforestry systems dominated by Gmelina arborea and Dipterocarps in the Philippines during the dry and the wet seasons. The secondary forest had significantly higher (p < 0.05) soil respiration rate, fine root biomass and soil organic matter than the agroforestry systems in the dry season. However, in the wet season, soil respiration and soil organic matter in the G. arborea dominated agroforestry system were as high as in the secondary forest. Whereas soil respiration was generally higher in the wet than in the dry season, there were no differences in fine root biomass, microbial biomass and soil organic matter between the two seasons. Soil respiration rate correlated positively and significantly with fine root biomass, microbial biomass, and soil organic C in all three sites. The results of this study indicate, to some degree, that different land use management practices have different effects on fine root biomass, microbial biomass and soil organic C which may affect soil respiration as well. Context
Edge effects due to habitat loss and fragmentation have pervasive impacts on many natural ecosystems worldwide.Objective
We aimed to explore whether, in tandem with the resource-based model of edge effects, species feeding-guild and flight-capacity can help explain species responses to an edge.Methods
We used a two-sided edge gradient that extended from 1000 m into native Eucalyptus forest to 316 m into an exotic pine plantation. We used generalised additive models to examine the continuous responses of beetle species, feeding-guild species richness and flight-capable group species richness to the edge gradient and environmental covariates.Results
Phytophagous species richness was directly related to variation in vegetation along the edge gradient. There were more flight-capable species in Eucalyptus forest and more flightless species in exotic pine plantation. Many individual species exhibited multiple-peaked edge-profiles.Conclusions
The resource based model for edge effects can be used in tandem with traits such as feeding-guild and flight-capacity to understand drivers of large scale edge responses. Some trait-groups can show generalisable responses that can be linked with drivers such as vegetation richness and habitat structure. Many trait-group responses, however, are less generalisable and not explained by easily measured habitat variables. Difficulties in linking traits with resources along the edge could be due to unmeasured variation and indirect effects. Some species’ responses reached the limits of the edge gradient demonstrating the need to examine edge effects at large scales, such as kilometres.109.

In a crossover study, 5 calves were made acidotic by intermittent intravenous infusion of isotonic hydrochloric acid (HCl) over approximately 24 h. This was followed by rapid (4 h) or slow (24 h) correction of blood pH with isotonic sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO(3)) to determine if rapid correction of acidemia produced paradoxical cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) acidosis. Infusion of HCl produced a marked metabolic acidosis with respiratory compensation. Venous blood pH (mean ± S(x)) was 7.362 ± 0.021 and 7.116 ± 0.032, partial pressure of carbon dioxide (Pco(2), torr) 48.8 ± 1.3 and 34.8 ± 1.4, and bicarbonate (mmol/L), 27.2 ± 1.27 and 11 ± 0.96; CSF pH was 7.344 ± 0.031 and 7.240 ± 0.039, Pco(2) 42.8 ± 2.9 and 34.5 ± 1.4, and bicarbonate 23.5 ± 0.91 and 14.2 ± 1.09 for the period before the infusion of hydrochloric acid and immediately before the start of sodium bicarbonate correction, respectively. In calves treated with rapid infusion of sodium bicarbonate, correction of venous acidemia was significantly more rapid and increases in Pco(2) and bicarbonate in CSF were also more rapid. However, there was no significant difference in CSF pH. After 4 h of correction, CSF pH was 7.238 ± 0.040 and 7.256 ± 0.050, Pco(2) 44.4 ± 2.2 and 34.2 ± 2.1, and bicarbonate 17.8 ± 1.02 and 14.6 ± 1.4 for rapid and slow correction, respectively.
