For the last decades, the fate of lignins in soil was analyzed mainly with cupric oxide (CuO) oxidation, which is traditionally used to quantify soil lignin content and characterize its state of degradation. This method presents limitations due to incomplete depolymerization of the lignin structure. In this study, we used a physicochemical soil lignin isolation procedure, which permits recovery of a milled wall enzymatic lignin (MWEL) fraction. Elemental composition and chemical structure of MWEL isolated from plants and soil were characterized. Its incorporation rate into an agricultural loamy soil was studied using stable isotope analyses of MWEL isolated from soils after 0 to 9 years of maize cultivation after wheat. Comparison of MWEL isolated from maize tissues and soil provided information on evolution of the lignin structure once incorporated into soil. We observed aromatic–aliphatic complex formation, which could lead to its sequestration in soil evidenced by increasing MWEL content after 9 years of maize cultivation. The 13C natural abundance of isolated MWEL showed faster incorporation of MWEL (17.4 % of renewed lignins after 9 years) compared to total soil organic matter (9 % of total soil organic carbon (SOC) was renewed). This faster incorporation rate of MWEL compared to bulk soil organic matter is in agreement with lignin turnover observed by CuO oxidation. Radiocarbon dating of MWEL suggested a mean age of around 50 years. We conclude that lignin isolation allows (1) access to a different fraction compared to CuO oxidation and (2) a detailed characterization of lignin transformation in soil. We suggest that interaction with aliphatic compounds could be one possible pathway of lignin preservation in soil.  相似文献

Background

Liming agricultural land is essential to optimise crop yield and soil nutrients. Despite the importance of pH management in agricultural soils, liming applications have been decreasing in the United Kingdom for decades. There is no comparison of contemporary and historical liming requirement (LR) methods for Northern European, temperate climate mineral soils high in organic matter (OM).

Aims

The aims of this research were to thoroughly comparatively analyse current methodologies and to ascertain which soil characteristics contribute to LR reactions.

Methods

Analysis compared methods for determining liming values common in the United Kingdom (Scottish Agricultural College [SAC] look-up chart, RothLime model), Europe and the United States (Shoemaker–McLean–Pratt, Sikora, Modified Mehlich buffers), and the 30-min calcium hydroxide titration developed by the University of Georgia.

Results

RothLime and SAC highly underestimated the LR value in acidic soils. The buffers highly over or underestimated LRs. The UGA titration method is a cheap, easy and accurate method which could be utilised for high OM soils but requires further calculation development. The characteristics most associated with soil–lime reactions in this experiment were measures of exchangeability (cation exchange capacity and loss on ignition, and by proxy, lime buffering capacity).

Conclusions

There is an opportunity to create buffer calculators and titration equations adapted to high OM soils. These are suggested for further development, through a larger diversity of UK soil types grouped by buffering capacity ranges. Including soil exchangeability factors in lime management calculations may contribute to more accurate values and therefore better resource management. Increasing LR accuracy for site-specific soil pH management, used in precision agriculture technologies, is a necessary tool for the conservation of natural resources like limestone, managing resource use efficiency, and for optimising yields.  相似文献

From October through April the growth of spat of Ostrea edulis, Crassostrea gigas and Venerupis semidecussata in an onshore nursery was recorded as a function of water temperature and food level.The results of this study indicate that even very eutrophic water, such as that of the Sluice Dock at Ostend, Belgium, does not provide enough microalgae to sustain growth of bivalve spat during winter, irrespective of whether the water is heated or not. It is necessary to supply additional food (cultured live algae). Food shortage for three months at higher temperature induced a stress situation resulting in high mortality rates, even after transferring all the spat into an optimal combination of temperature and food availability.  相似文献

  1. In the context of the River Rhône restoration programme, the objective of this study was to assess the dispersal and population connectivity of the European chub, Squalius cephalus (Linnaeus, 1758) in a section of the natural, free-flowing part of the lower River Rhône.
  2. The elemental water signatures for Sr:Ca and Ba:Ca were measured at seven stations within the river section, including its tributaries and backwaters, to determine whether they could be differentiated by microchemistry. From August to October the signatures differed among three sectors of the study reach: the Rhône; the Ardèche; and the backwaters.
  3. The elemental signatures of the otoliths of 178 young-of-the-year (YOY) chub from the stations were measured to assess spawning areas and identify early migratory life histories. Analyses of otolith microchemistry identified the natal origin of 95% of the fish. Sr:Ca signatures of otoliths showed early downstream migration for 30.4% of the YOY chub; however, 70% of the fish recruited relatively close to their spawning origin suggesting a potential inshore retention of fish.
  4. The results showed (i) a non-negligible contribution of the tributaries and backwaters in the recruitment of fish into the main channel; and (ii) the ability of chub to migrate over several kilometres during their first few months of life.
  5. This study shows that the combination of water and otolith microchemistry analyses of fish growth increases the understanding of fish life history. Moreover, the study revealed that half of the YOY fish from this river section came from the tributaries and the other half came from reproduction in the River Rhône (despite its high anthropization).
  6. These methods offer promising future applications of otolith microchemistry for river management in the context of ecological rehabilitation, especially to assess the effectiveness of measures applied in the restoration of floodplain connectivity for riverine fish population conservation.

This paper presents a case of planting and management of natural regeneration of shihuahuaco (Dipteryx spp.) by recent migrants in a Peruvian Amazonian logging frontier. We interviewed residents of three communities of smallholders in Irazola District, Province of Padre Abad, Region of Ucayali, located within the historic and actual boundaries of an active logging concession, and conducted growth studies of shihuahuaco trees planted in two mixed-species agroforestry fields, over a period of 3 years. We found that the majority of landholders were managing the natural regeneration of valuable hardwood timber trees, and planting seedlings on their lands. Growth of shihuahuaco trees in agroforestry fields was comparable to growth rates in managed silvicultural plantations, which suggests the potential for local smallholders activities to contribute to conservation of genetic stock and eventual renewal of populations depleted by logging. We recommend greater recognition and inclusion of local people, with their innovative and productive silvicultural practices, in efforts to remediate the impacts of selective logging of high-value timber species.  相似文献

Microbial amino acid metabolism may lead to substantial amounts of biogenic amines in either spontaneously fermented or spoiled foods. For products manufactured with starter cultures, it has been suggested that certain strains may produce higher amounts of such amines than others; however, to support efforts of food manufacturers in mitigating amine formation, reliable methods for amine quantitation are needed. Using 10 isotopically labeled biogenic amines as the internal standards, stable isotope dilution assays were developed for the quantitation of 12 biogenic amines and of the 2 polyamines, spermine and spermidine, in one LC-MS/MS run. Application of the method to several foods revealed high concentrations of, for example, tyramine and putrescine in salami and fermented cabbage, whereas histamine was highest in Parmesan cheese and fermented cabbage. On the other hand, ethanolamine was highest in red wine and Parmesan cheese. The results suggest that different amino acid decarboxylases are active in the respective foods depending on the microorganisms present. The polyamine spermine was highest in salami and tuna.  相似文献

Reducing the sodium content in foods is complex because of their multidimensional sensory characteristics and the multifunctionality of sodium chloride. The aim of this study was to elucidate how food composition may influence in-mouth sodium release and saltiness perception. Lipoprotein matrices (LPM) were produced using milk constituents and characterized by means of rheological measurements, texture, and taste sensory profiles. Texture and taste perceptions were affected differently by variations in the salt level, dry matter, and fat contents. Composition and textural changes also modified temporal sodium release and saltiness perception recorded in five subjects, but the effects varied as a function of the salt content. The water content mainly appeared to influence the amount of sodium released, whereas saltiness perception was mainly related to fat content. Elasticity, coating, and granularity were found to be correlated with temporal sodium release and/or saltiness parameters.  相似文献

This study aimed to investigate the relationships between sodium release, saltiness, and oral parameters during the eating of lipoprotein matrices (LPM). Sodium release and saltiness relative to 10 LPM were recorded during normal mastication by five subjects with differing oral parameters (chewing efficiency and salivary flow rate). The LPM samples varied in composition (dry matter, fat, salt, and pH levels) and represented a broad range of hardness. Mastication was recorded using electromyography simultaneously with sensory assessment. Differences in chewing behavior could explain most of the variability in sodium release and saltiness among subjects. Subjects with a higher chewing force and lower salivary flow rate experienced higher levels of sodium release and saltiness. In terms of the LPM, sodium release and saltiness were affected by either chewing behavior or food composition.  相似文献
