OBJECTIVE: To investigate the feasibility of using multivariate cluster analysis to meta-analyze pharmacokinetic data obtained from studies of pharmacokinetics of ampicillin trihydrate in cattle and identify factors that could account for variability in pharmacokinetic parameters among studies. SAMPLE POPULATION: Data from original studies of the pharmacokinetics of ampicillin trihydrate in cattle in the database of the Food Animal Residue Avoidance Databank. PROCEDURE: Mean plasma or serum ampicillin concentration versus time data and potential factors that may have affected the pharmacokinetics of ampicillin trihydrate were obtained from each study. Noncompartmental pharmacokinetic analyses were performed, and values of pharmacokinetic parameters were clustered by use of multivariate cluster analysis. Practical importance of the clusters was evaluated by comparing the frequency of factors that may have affected the pharmacokinetics of ampicillin trihydrate among clusters. RESULTS: A single cluster with lower mean values for clearance and volume of distribution of ampicillin trihydrate administered PO, compared with other clusters, was identified. This cluster included studies that used preruminant calves in which feeding was withheld overnight and calves to which probenecid had been administered concurrently. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Meta-analysis was successful in detecting a potential subpopulation of cattle for which factors that explained differences in pharmacokinetic parameters could be identified. Accurate estimates of pharmacokinetic parameters are important for the calculation of dosages and extended withdrawal intervals after extralabel drug administration. 相似文献

Asia contributes more than 90% to the world's aquaculture production. Like other farming systems, aquaculture is plagued with disease problems resulting from its intensification and commercialization. This paper describes the various factors, providing specific examples, which have contributed to the current disease problems faced by what is now the fastest growing food-producing sector globally. These include increased globalization of trade and markets; the intensification of fish-farming practices through the movement of broodstock, postlarvae, fry and fingerlings; the introduction of new species for aquaculture development; the expansion of the ornamental fish trade; the enhancement of marine and coastal areas through the stocking of aquatic animals raised in hatcheries; the unanticipated interactions between cultured and wild populations of aquatic animals; poor or lack of effective biosecurity measures; slow awareness on emerging diseases; the misunderstanding and misuse of specific pathogen free (SPF) stocks; climate change; other human-mediated movements of aquaculture commodities. Data on the socio-economic impacts of aquatic animal diseases are also presented, including estimates of losses in production, direct and indirect income and employment, market access or share of investment, and consumer confidence; food availability; industry failures. Examples of costs of investment in aquatic animal health-related activities, including national strategies, research, surveillance, control and other health management programmes are also provided. Finally, the strategies currently being implemented in the Asian region to deal with transboundary diseases affecting the aquaculture sector are highlighted. These include compliance with international codes, and development and implementation of regional guidelines and national aquatic animal health strategies; new diagnostic and therapeutic techniques and new information technology; new biosecurity measures including risk analysis, epidemiology, surveillance, reporting and planning for emergency response to epizootics; targeted research; institutional strengthening and manpower development (education, training and extension research and diagnostic services). 相似文献

Rapid depigmentation of brown eggs is an infrequent but startling event in the commercial egg industry that can result in significant economic losses. Loss of shell pigment in brown-shelled eggs is caused by various factors. In many cases, the exact cause of flock-wide pigment loss remains undetermined. A rapid decline in shell pigmentation was observed in 2 flocks of Hyline brown layers. The lack of evidence of an infectious disease process suggested a feed or management problem. On the basis of a small-scale, "in-house" feeding trial, the feed was identified as the cause of depigmentation. Feed analysis by liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry confirmed the presence of 4,4'-dinitrocarbanilide, a major component of nicarbazin (NCZ). There was no evidence of increased mortality, and only a slight but transient drop in the egg production was observed. Depigmentation effects were rapidly reversed after replacing the feed with NCZ-free feed. 相似文献

Proximal intertarsal or tarsometatarsal arthrodesis was performed in four dogs using either 2.0/2.7-mm or 2.7/3.5-mm hybrid dynamic compression plates. Mean radiographic follow-up time was 30.5 weeks (range, 15 to 60 weeks). Mean owner follow-up time was 40.5 weeks (range, 27 to 60 weeks). All cases went on to form stable, healed arthrodeses. Owners reported no noticeable lameness problems long term. Complications occurred in one case and included pressure sores and fracture of the calcaneus. Artificial neural networks were used to quantify the distribution of macroinvertebrate functional feeding groups (FFGs) in
relation to physical variables and to land-cover in the Adour–Garonne stream system (SW France; 116,000 km2). The relative abundances of 5 FFGs were calculated from macroinvertebrate data recorded at 165 sampling sites. Each site
was characterized using 5 physical variables (elevation, stream order, stream width, distance from the source, slope) and
3 land-cover variables (% forested, % urban areas, % agricultural areas). The sites were first classified using the Self-Organizing
Map algorithm (SOM), according to the physical and land-cover variables. Two major clusters of sites corresponded to anthropogenically
modified and natural areas, respectively. Anthropogenically modified areas were clearly divided into agricultural and urban
landscapes. Each major cluster was divided into 3–4 subsets of sites according to a topographic gradient of physical variables.
To examine the variability of the communities, FFG proportions at the 165 sites were examined on the SOM trained with physical
and land-cover variables. When the riverine landscape was natural, FFG patterns responded to the upstream–downstream gradient
in physical variables. When the landscape was altered by agriculture or urbanization, the effects of land-cover on FFGs overcame
the influence of the physical variables. The categorization of the landscape into forested, agricultural, and urban areas
was relevant to detect changes in FFG patterns. In light of increasing development along riparian zones, the use of SOMs to
detect responses of FFGs to landscape alterations at regional scales exemplifies an effective technique for assessing river

Several atypical Phytophthora strains, isolated from a range of horticultural hosts, were tentatively identified as P. cactorum. Numerous abortive oospores were observed in these strains and isozyme analysis showed all were heterozygous for the dimeric malic enzyme (MDHP). More detailed comparisons indicated that their MDHP alleles matched those of both P. cactorum and P. hedraiandra. Cloning and sequencing of the nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions of the atypical P. cactorum strains demonstrated the presence of sequences characteristic for both P. cactorum and P. hedraiandra. It was concluded that the atypical strains represented hybrids between the resident P. cactorum and the apparently recently introduced P. hedraiandra. Most strains had the mitochondrially inherited cytochrome oxidase I (Cox I) gene typical of one putative parent P. hedraiandra, while one single strain had that of the other putative parent, consistent with the hybrid hypothesis. Our data also suggest that the hybrids are evolving. The hybrids have proliferated on multiple new hosts in the Netherlands. 相似文献

Genetic parameters for carcass traits of 1774 field progeny (1281 steers and 493 heifers), and their genetic relationships with feed efficiency traits of their sire population (740 bulls) were estimated with REML. Feed efficiency traits included feed conversion ratio (FCR) and residual feed intake (RFI). RFI was calculated by the residual of phenotypic (RFIphe) and genetic (RFIgen) regression from the multivariate analysis of feed intake on metabolic weight and daily gain. Progeny traits were carcass weight (CWT), rib eye area (REA), rib thickness (RBT), subcutaneous fat, yield estimate (YEM), marbling score (MSR), meat quality grade, meat color, fat color, meat firmness and meat texture. The estimated heritability for CWT (0.70) was high and heritabilities for all the other traits were moderate (ranged from 0.32 to 0.47), except for meat and fat color and meat texture which were low (ranged from 0.02 to 0.25). The high genetic correlation (0.62) between YEM and MSR suggests that simultaneous improvement of high carcass yield and beef marbling is possible. Estimated genetic correlations of RFI (RFIphe and RFIgen) of sires with CWT (− 0.60 and − 0.53) and MSR (− 0.62 and − 0.50) of their progeny were favorably negative indicating that the selection against RFI of sires may have contributed to produce heavier carcass and increase in beef marbling. The correlated responses in CWT, REA and RBT of progeny were higher to selection against RFI than those to selection against FCR of sires. This study provides evidence that selection against RFI is preferred over selection against FCR in sire population for getting better correlated responses in carcass traits of their progeny. 相似文献
