Tillage practices may reduce the organic matter content in near-surface soil horizons causing crust formation. Surface conditions may cause an increase in surface run-off, thus enhancing contaminant transfer of heavy metals or an acceleration in nutrient loss. This study examines the effect of applying crop residues to the surface of tilled soils on heavy metal losses by run-off. Losses in iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) were analysed. Run-off and sediment yield were measured on 1 m2 plots using a rainfall simulator with a constant 65 mm/h intensity. Four successive rainfall applications were performed, the first three at 25 mm each and the last at 65 mm. Added corn straw varied between 0 and 4 t/ha in the five studied treatments. After 140 mm cumulative rainfall, total heavy metal losses were as follows: Fe from 137 to 950 mg/L, Mn from 2.3 to 12.83 mg/L, Cu from 0.09 to 0.72 mg/L and Zn from 0.31 to 2.46 mg/L. Dissolved fractions were as follows: Fe from 0.014 to 0.229 mg/L, Mn from 0.034 to 1.45 mg/L, Cu from 0.002 to 0.013 mg/L and Zn from 0.02 to 0.12 mg/L. Total concentrations of the studied elements decreased exponentially due to the effect of corn straw on soil loss. However, dissolved contents of Fe and Cu scarcely varied. Significant positive linear correlations were observed between total heavy metal content and soil and sediment loss by run-off. It is concluded that the addition of straw to a soil of low fertility prevents heavy metal loss. 相似文献
In previous work, a mouse line selected for resistance (R) to fescue toxicosis had higher activities of two hepatic Phase II detoxification enzymes than a mouse line selected for fescue toxicosis susceptibility (S). The primary objective of the present study was to determine whether those same lines also differed in hepatic Phase I enzyme activity, estimated from sleep time (ST) following sodium pentobarbital anesthesia. Additional objectives were to determine whether ST differences between lines were modulated by endophyte-infected fescue in the diet (with or without an enzyme inducer) and whether ST of individual mice was correlated with the effect of a toxin-containing diet on the postweaning growth of those mice. In Exp. I, 24 males from each line were randomly assigned to each of five diets: control (commercial rodent food meal); E+ (50% endophyte-infected fescue seed, 50% control); E+P (the E+ diet supplemented with 1,000 ppm phenobarbital); E- (50% endophyte-free fescue seed, 50% control); and E-P (the E- diet supplemented with 1,000 ppm phenobarbital). After 4 wk on these diets, ST was measured on all the mice. A second ST was recorded on each mouse by randomly sampling one-fourth of the population after 1, 2, 3, or 4 wk on a pelleted rodent food diet. Regardless of diet, R mice had shorter first and second ST than S mice (P < 0.01), suggesting higher hepatic Phase I microsomal enzyme activity. Mice on both phenobarbital-supplemented diets had shorter first ST than mice whose diets did not include that microsomal enzyme inducer (P < 0.01). In Exp. II, ST was measured on male and female R and S mice (n = 280) after they had been fed the E- diet for 2 wk, then the E+ diet for 2 wk, and then a pelleted rodent food diet for 2 wk. Growth response to the E+ diet was the percentage of reduction in gain on the E+ diet compared to gain on the E- diet the previous 2 wk. As in Exp. I, S mice slept longer than R mice (P < 0.01). The residual correlation between ST and gain reduction associated with the E+ diet equaled 0.04. Thus, an animal's apparent Phase I enzyme activity did not predict its growth rate depression on the toxin-containing diet. Based on these and previous studies, divergent selection for toxicosis response in mice was successful partially by causing divergence in activities of hepatic Phase I and II detoxification enzymes. 相似文献
Biological weapons are considered as mass destruction and terror weapons. Terrorism including bioterrorism is the major threat in the future conflicts for our nations. The aim of bioterrorism is more related to the potential disorganisation of the society than to the lethal effects of the agents used. The dramatic consequences cannot be discarded, especially if contagious agents such viral are used. The preparation of specific defence measures is a major challenge for our countries.
The knowledge acquired from the struggle against natural infectious diseases and recent events are essential to improve behaviours to face the biological weapon threats. The defence attitude is based on the anticipation of the threat, the management of the victims, and the restoration of the operational capabilities. This global defence attitude implies six important functions: (i) alert, (ii) detection and diagnosis, (iii) availability of pharmaceutical countermeasures such as vaccine, sera and anti-infectious medicine and products, (iv) medical management of victims, (v) training and information, (vi) research and development.
Passive and active immunoprevention and immuntherapy belong to the approaches discussed in the context of bioterrorism countermeasures. Further researches might be focused on these topics. 相似文献
AIM: To describe the gross and histological lesions of a neurological disease in Borderdale sheep characterised clinically by blindness and circling, as a basis to its classification. METHODS: Formalin-fixed tissues were processed into paraffin wax and epoxy resin for light and electron microscopy of variously stained sections. RESULTS: Lesions were those of a lysosomal storage disease with severe neurodegeneration of the cerebral cortex. The staining reactions, autofluorescence and ultrastructure of storage material allowed the diagnosis of neuronal ceroid-lipofuscinosis associated with the accumulation of subunit-c of mitochondrial ATP synthase. CONCLUSIONS: The severity of neurodegeneration and minor differences in the ultrastructure of storage material implied that this was a different disease from other forms of ovine ceroid-lipofuscinosis that accumulate subunit-c of mitochondrial ATP synthase. An autosomal recessive mode of inheritance is considered probable. Although of only minor economic importance, this disease may be important to research into the group of ceroid-lipofuscinoses as a whole. 相似文献
Principal component analysis (PCA) was applied to the gas chromatographic data obtained from 23 different greenhouse trials. This was used to establish which factors, including application technique (very small, small, medium and large drop-size), crop characteristics (short/tall, thin/dense) and pattern application of the operator (walking towards or away from the treated area) are relevant to the dermal exposure levels of greenhouse applicators. The results showed that the highest exposure by pesticides during field applications in greenhouses, in the climatic conditions and in the crop conditions typical of a southern European country, occurs on the lower legs and front thighs of the applicators. Similar results were obtained by hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA). Drop-size seems to be very important in determining total exposure, while height and density of crops have little influence on total exposure under the conditions of the present study. No pesticide type is a major factor in total exposure. The application of multiple regression analysis (MRA) allowed assessment of the relationships between the pesticide exposure of the less affected parts of the body with the most affected parts. 相似文献
Land–water interactions were examined in three regions in the Virginian Biogeographic Province; the southern shore of Cape
Cod, Massachusetts; the Hudson/Raritan region of New York; and the eastern shore of the Delmarva (Delaware/Maryland/Virginia)
Peninsula. Cumulative distribution functions were used to evaluate similarity in environmental condition among estuaries.
Spatial-setting variables (location in a river, coastal lagoon, or in open waters) were associated with variation for some
measures of estuarine condition. Patterns of coastal urban and agriculture gradients were measured and their relationship
with indicators of estuarine condition was modeled statistically. When estuaries were pooled, the highest variation explained
by spatial-setting variables was found for dissolved oxygen (DO, R2 = 0.44) and salinity (R2 = 0.58), with DO decreasing in river locations and salinity decreasing with rainfall and sampling locations near rivers.
The explanatory power for the other indicator variables was low and varied from 6% to 27%. Rainfall explained some of the
variation (R2 = 0.23) in total suspended solids. Moderate (0.4 < | r | < 0.7) to strong (| r | ≥ 0.7) linear associations were found between total urban area and measures of estuarine condition. Within regions, total
urban area was positively associated with Silver (r = 0.59), Cadmium (r = 0.65), and Mercury (r = 0.47) in Cape Cod, and inversely related to DO (r = −0.65) in the Hudson/Raritan region. No associations were found in the Delmarva Peninsula study area. Total area of agriculture
showed a moderate association with Arsenic in Cape Cod, but no other associations were found in the other two regions. Our
analyses show a measurable impact of urban land use on coastal ecosystem condition over large areas of the northeastern United
States. This pattern was most evident when many different landscapes were considered simultaneously. The relationship between
urban development and estuarine condition were weaker within the individual regions studied. The use of land use/cover models
for predicting estuarine condition is a challenging task that warrants enhancements in the type, quantity, and quality of
data to improve our ability to discern relationships between anthropogenic activities on land and the condition of coastal
environments. 相似文献
Wood in streams functions as fish habitat, but relationships between fish abundance (or size) and large wood in streams are not consistent. One possible reason for variable relationships between fish and wood in streams is that the association of fish with wood habitat may depend on ecological context such as large‐scale geomorphology. We studied the relationship between salmonid assemblages and large wood jams (LWJ) in four settings that differed geomorphically at the scale of the stream corridor along a tributary to Lake Superior in old‐growth conifer–hardwood forest in northern Michigan. The focal fish species of this study were brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis), which were wild in the stream. Relocation efforts for coaster brook trout (an adfluvial life history variant of brook trout) were ongoing in the study stream. We measured fish abundance and length in pairs of pools of similar size and substrate, but varying in the presence of LWJ; this allowed us to evaluate associations of fish simply with the presence of LWJ rather than with other channel or flow‐shaping functions of LWJ. The length of Oncorhynchus spp. and young introduced brook trout was not strongly correlated with LWJ presence; however, the presence of LWJ in pools was positively correlated with larger wild brook trout. We also found that the correspondence of LWJ with the abundance of salmonids appears to be moderated by the presence of alternative habitat in this relatively natural, old‐growth forest stream. 相似文献
