REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Most racehorses are trained regularly from about age 18 months; therefore, little information is available on the effect of training in Thoroughbred foals. HYPOTHESIS: Well-controlled exercise could improve muscle potential ability for endurance running. METHODS: Thoroughbred foals at age 2 months were separated into control and training (treadmill exercise) groups and samples obtained from the middle gluteal muscle at 2 and 12 months post partum. Muscle fibre compositions were determined by histochemical and electrophoretical techniques and succinic dehydrogenase (SDH) activity was analysed in each fibre type. RESULTS: All fibre types were hypertrophied with growth and type I and IIA fibres were significantly larger in the training than the control group at age 12 months. A significant increase of SDH activity was found in type IIX muscle fibres in the training group. CONCLUSIONS: Training in young Thoroughbred horses can facilitate muscle fibre hypertrophy and increase the oxidative capacity of type IIX fibres, which could potentially enhance stamina at high speeds. POTENTIAL RELEVANCE: To apply this result to practical training, further studies are needed to determine more effective and safe intensities of controlled exercise. 相似文献

A ring-opening polymerization of cyclic esters -caprolactone (CL) and/or l-lactide (LACD) was carried out in the presence of methyl--d-glucoside (m-Glc) as an activated substrate and tin(II) 2-ethylhexanoate (SnEht2) as a catalyst. This led to successful synthesis of an armed polyester polyol with m-Glc as the core. These polyols were characterized through gel permeation chromatography, hydroxyl value assessment, differential scanning calorimetry, and viscosity measurements. It was clarified that the thermal properties and tractability of the synthesized polyols are closely related to the structural characteristics of the side chain polyesters, such as their length and chemical composition. Polyurethane foams were also prepared by mixing an appropriate amount of the polyols with diphenyl methane diisocyanate, a foaming agent (water), and other additives, and their mechanical properties were examined. Two polyurethane foams manufactured from polycaprolactone-polyols that were synthesized at a CL/m-Glc ratio of 2 or 5, were used in a biodegradation test in a closed system of activated sludge suspension. Based on the model–data comparison at the eddy-covariance observation sites from CarboEastAsia datasets, we report the current status of the terrestrial carbon cycle modeling in monsoon Asia. In order to assess the modeling performance and discuss future requirements for both modeling and observation efforts in Asia, we ran eight terrestrial biosphere models at 24 sites from 1901 to 2010. By analyzing the modeled carbon fluxes against the CarboEastAsia datasets, the strengths and weaknesses of terrestrial biosphere modeling over Asia were evaluated. In terms of pattern and magnitude, the carbon fluxes (i.e., gross primary productivity, ecosystem respiration, and net ecosystem exchange) at the temperate and boreal forest sites were simulated best, whereas the simulation results from the tropical forest, cropland, and disturbed sites were poor. The multi-model ensemble mean values showed lower root mean square errors and higher correlations, suggesting that composition of multiple terrestrial biosphere models would be preferable for terrestrial carbon budget assessments in Asia. These results indicate that the current model-based estimation of terrestrial carbon budget has large uncertainties, and future research should further refine the models to permit re-evaluation of the terrestrial carbon budget. 相似文献

This study reports on a CYP4 gene possibly involved in methidathion resistance in Amblyseius womersleyi Schicha. This is the first report on a CYP4 gene from a phytoseiid mite. Four different CYP4 genes (CYP4-a, CYP4-b, CYP4-c, and CYP4-d) were detected in this predaceous mites. No differences in CYP4 expression levels were detected for the strains Ishigaki S, Kanaya S (methidathion susceptible strains) and Kanaya R (methidathion resistant strain), using RT-PCR method for CYP4-a, CYP4-b, and CYP4-c. In the case of CYP4-d, the expression level in Kanaya R was significantly higher than in susceptible strains. Studies using RT-PCR indicated that CYP4-d gene is expressed in all stages of A. womersleyi, with a little higher expression in protonymph, deutonymph and adult, in comparison to egg and larva. Significant correlation between CYP4-d expression and monooxygenase activity was observed for the different strains and life stages of A. womersleyi. 相似文献

The permethrin resistant strain (TR-strain) of the beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua (Hübner), has 92.5-fold resistance to permethrin (at LD50 level) compared to the permethrin susceptible strain (TS-strain). Bioassay involving permethrin mixed with piperonyl butoxide, an inhibitor of microsomal cytochrome P450s, significantly reduced the resistance ratio from 92.5- to 7.9-fold. However, S,S,S-tributylphosphorotrithioate and diethylmaleate which are inhibitors of esterases and glutathione S-transferase, respectively, did not affect the resistance level. These results indicate that the detoxification of permethrin in the TR-strain was primarily due to the cytochrome P450 monooxygenases. LD50 for permethrin was increased to 4.5-fold by the pre-treatment of phenobarbital in the TS-strain. The effect of induction by phenobarbital was almost completely overcome by the piperonyl butoxide treatment. However, it was observed that phenobarbital treatment did not cause any change in the toxicity of permethrin to TR strain. Since this result deviated from the expectation that the metabolism of phenobarbital in the TR-strain should be greater than that in the TS-strain, it was deemed necessary to compare the metabolism of phenobarbital between the TS- and TR-strains. Comparison was made based on the concentration of phenobarbital in the hemolymph and whole body. The results showed no significant difference in phenobarbital treatment between the two strains used in this study suggesting the possibility that the induction system in TS-strain is different from the TR-strain. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to establish a culture system to improve the meiotic competence of porcine oocyte-granulosa cell complexes (OGCs) obtained from preantral or early antral follicles. Porcine OGCs were recovered from follicles with diameters of 230-300 (preantral follicles), 300-500, and 500-700 mum (early antral follicles) using scalpels. The OGCs were cultured for 2 weeks in culture medium. We examined the effects of the sizes of the follicles from which OGCs were recovered, the concentrations of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP, 0-8%) in the culture medium, and 2 types of culture dish (Falcon 3002 vs 1007) on formation of the antrum of OGCs. After culture, the oocytes were matured for 44 h to assess their meiotic competence. OGCs recovered from small follicles (230-500 microm) required longer (P<0.05) than larger follicles to form the antrum structure. The percentage of OGCs forming the antrum structure that were cultured in 2% PVP (31%) was higher (P<0.05) than for those cultured in other PVP concentrations (0-11%). The percentages of antrum-structure formation for OGCs cultured on Falcon 3002 (83% for 2% PVP and 60% for 4% PVP) were higher (P<0.05) than those cultured on Falcon 1007 (47% for 2% PVP and 9% for 4% PVP). Furthermore, all of the intact oocytes that were obtained from culture of OGCs and that formed an antrum were in the GV stage (n=28). When these immature oocytes were cultured for 44 h, the percentage of oocytes that reached the metaphase II stage (25%, n=68) was higher (P<0.0001) than that of oocytes matured without culture (0.7%, n=137). Measles virus (MeV) vaccine strain, AIK-C, is temperature sensitive (ts), which is thought to be associated with attenuation of virus pathogenicity. In this study, replication and antibody response were examined in cotton rats using viruses carrying different forms of the P gene, which is responsible for the ts phenotype of strain AIK-C and its parental Edmonston strain. When cotton rats were inoculated intranasally, ts viruses neither replicated in lungs, nor reproducibly generated an antibody response. When inoculated intramusculary (i.m.), however, ts strains raised an antibody titer in all animals. This response was not observed when ultraviolet-inactivated virus was used. ts virus, inoculated i.m., was recovered from cotton rat drainage lymph nodes. These results suggest that ts virus, inoculated i.m., could replicate in the cotton rat, presumably at the superficial lymph node, and induce an antibody response. Therefore, cotton rats can serve as a small-animal model for investigating immune responses to safer ts vaccine, as well as recombinant vaccine using AIK-C as a vector for protection against other infectious agents. 相似文献
