The identification of anthropogenic and environmental drivers on length‐at‐age of fish stocks is important to understanding ecosystem dynamics and harvest intensity. We evaluated coastwide annual growth of n = 187,115 Atlantic Menhaden (Brevoortia tyrannus) and n = 299,185 Gulf Menhaden (B. patronus), using samples collected from the North, Mid‐, and South Atlantic from 1961 to 2016 and across the Gulf of Mexico from 1977 to 2016. Using hierarchical models of age 1 growth and age 2 growth, we evaluated a suite of candidate predictors including fishery landings, easterly (U) and northerly (V) wind velocity, river discharge, juvenile abundance, and the Atlantic Multi‐decadal Oscillation (AMO). We found age 2 growth rates were smaller than age 1 growth rates for both species and that Atlantic Menhaden growth rates were 3–4 times greater than Gulf Menhaden. Age 1 growth rate of Atlantic Menhaden was positively affected by landings lagged by one year, indicating a density‐dependent mechanism. In addition, AMO (negative effect), and wind U (positive effect) and wind V (negative effect) in the North Atlantic region were significant factors influencing coastwide age 1 Menhaden growth. Wind V (negative effect) and AMO (positive effect) influenced age 1 Gulf Menhaden growth. No environmental factors were found to have an effect on age 2 Atlantic Menhaden growth, and AMO was the only significant predictor (weak negative effect) of age 2 Gulf Menhaden growth. Fishing pressure was the primary influence on age 1 Atlantic Menhaden growth, whereas age 1 Gulf Menhaden growth was primarily influenced by environmental conditions.  相似文献

This study investigated the production performance of the Atlantic salmon postsmolt (Salmo salar L.) subjected to cyclic oxygen reductions (hypoxia) of varying severity. Triplicate groups (N = 955) were kept at constant 80% O2 (control) or subjected to 1 h and 45 min of hypoxia (50, 60 or 70% O2, termed 80:70, 80:60 and 80:50 groups) every 6 h at 16°C for 69 days. Feed was provided in normoxia. One third of the fish were kept further for 30 days in normoxia to study possible compensatory growth. Cyclic hypoxia did not alter the oxygen uptake rates of fish, measured in night‐time. Fish subjected to 50% and 60% O2 reduced feeding by 13% and 6% compared with the controls, respectively, with corresponding reductions in specific growth rates. Feed utilization was not reduced. Compensatory growth was observed in fish from the 80:50 group, but full compensation was not achieved. The main conclusions were that feeding in normoxia does not fully alleviate negative effects of cyclic hypoxia on feeding and growth, when oxygen is reduced to 60% or below in hypoxic periods, that feed utilization is maintained, and that compensatory growth may lessen negative effects.  相似文献

In order to better understand the epidemiology of Puccinia triticina and the relationship between airborne inoculum and disease severity, a method for quantifying airborne inoculum was developed using volumetric Burkard 7-day spore traps and real-time PCR. The method was applied using a spore trap network from 1 March to 30 June over a 5-year period. At one site, the inoculum was quantified continuously over 3 years, during which it showed a seasonal distribution, with the highest quantities and detection frequencies occurring between May and June. High mean daily quantities (65.8–121.2 spores/day) and detection frequencies (±20 % of days) were also reported after harvest from September to December. In the coldest months of the year, almost no detection was recorded (1–6 % of days). The study results indicate that the absence of inoculum in the air when upper leaves are emerging could be a limiting factor for the risk of epidemics. Mean daily quantities of airborne inoculum (0–131.4 spores/day) were measured from the beginning of stem elongation (GS30) to the flag leaf stage (GS39). These values were well correlated with the disease severity levels measured during grain development. A multiple regression analysis showed that total rainfall in late summer and autumn and mean minimum temperature in winter positively influence spore density between GS30 and GS39 in the following spring (R2 = 0.73). This relationship and the patterns of airborne inoculum observed in fields strongly suggest the existence of a ‘green bridge’ phenomenon in Belgium. Our study also showed that the quantification of airborne inoculum or its estimation using a weather-based predictive model could be useful for interpreting disease severity models and avoiding over-estimates of disease risk.  相似文献

The Norwegain mountains have had a central role in the subsistence agroecosystems by providing vast biological resources for humans and their livestock since 4000–3500 BP as indicated by paleoecological records. Later with the development of the summer farming system the use of the mountains was intensified. This long-term use of the mountains has shaped a montane cultural landscape by livestock grazing, mowing for hay, fuel collection and a variety of other uses. The result is a significant increase of the grassland areas at the expense of the forest. Those semi-natural grasslands and heathlands with specific biological diversity have until recently dominated the mountains but are today decreasing due to forest invasion – which in turn is a result of changes in human land use. The present paper focuses on changes in landscape pattern and differences in landscape development in two mountain valleys with summer farming activities, in Mid-Norway, over the period 1960s–1990s, and seeks to interpret the changes in relation to differential land use and environmental factors. This study contributes examples from human shaped ecosystems in mountains where the fragmentation of semi-natural habitats is addressed. A set of landscape pattern indices commonly used in landscape ecological studies is also used here, and their ecological relevance in the present context is dealt with. The implications of changed land use for biodiversity conservation in those mountains and the relationships to future sustainable agriculture is also briefly discussed.  相似文献

Silicon (Si) is known to reduce the incidence of pathogens on many plants. Little information is available on the potential positive effects of Si on the susceptibility of banana (Musa acuminata) to pathogens. Root-rot fungi of the genus Cylindrocladium have been reported, along with endoparasitic nematodes, to be the causal agent of toppling disease and severe yield loss. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of Si supply on Cylindrocladium spathiphylli infection on banana. Plantlets inoculated by dipping the root system in a conidial suspension of the pathogen were grown on a desilicated ferralsol and amended, or not, with 2 mM of soluble Si under greenhouse conditions in Guadeloupe. The root lesion severity was evaluated using the image analysis program WinRHIZO 7, 14 and 21 days after inoculation. A reduction of about 50% of root necrosis was observed 14 days after inoculation for the Si-supplied plants compared with those not supplied with Si. The Si amendment also alleviated growth reduction caused by the pathogen. These results suggest that Si could have a positive effect on banana resistance to C. spathiphylli and provide an environmentally friendly alternative to pesticides for the integrated control of an important crop disease.  相似文献

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) is a considerable threat to the swine industry and implementing biosecurity measures is essential for the control of its transmission. The aims of this study were: (1) to describe biosecurity practices in production sites located in a moderate density (MD) and a high density (HD) pig area according to production type; (2) to group sites in different patterns according to their biosecurity practices; and (3) to determine the geographical distribution of sites according to biosecurity patterns. Biosecurity practices were selected based on PRRS epidemiology. A questionnaire was completed on 125 breeding sites (MD=54; HD=71) and 120 growing (HD) sites, between 2005 and 2008. Depending on area and production type, the frequency of biosecurity practices used ranged from 0 to 2% for barrier at site entrance, 0 to 19% for use of shower, 25 to 35% for washing truck between loads of pigs, 51 to 57% for absence of rendering or rendering without access to the site, and 26 to 51% for absence of gilt purchase or purchase with quarantine. Better practices pertaining to entrance protocol (i.e. "no-entry" sign, shower, ≥24 h downtime) were reported more frequently on breeding sites in the MD than the HD area (P<0.05). In the HD area, growing sites had in general a lower level of biosecurity than breeding sites. Using a two-step clustering procedure performed separately for breeding and growing sites, two different patterns were obtained for each production type, which corresponded to a high and low level of biosecurity. For breeding sites, a higher biosecurity level was observed at sites located away from other pig sites, set at more than 300 m from the public road, having higher sow inventory, or being part of an integrated production (P<0.05). Spatial clusters of sites for each biosecurity pattern were detected. This study identified some shortcomings regarding biosecurity that should be addressed before implementing any PRRSV regional control. Vicinity of sites with different biosecurity levels also suggests difficulties in planning priorities of intervention based on geographical distribution of sites.  相似文献

What is the complex impedance of a fully coherent quantum resistance-capacitance (RC) circuit at gigahertz frequencies in which a resistor and a capacitor are connected in series? While Kirchhoff's laws predict addition of capacitor and resistor impedances, we report on observation of a different behavior. The resistance, here associated with charge relaxation, differs from the usual transport resistance given by the Landauer formula. In particular, for a single-mode conductor, the charge-relaxation resistance is half the resistance quantum, regardless of the transmission of the mode. The new mesoscopic effect reported here is relevant for the dynamical regime of all quantum devices.  相似文献

Pinus aristata Engelm., the Bristlecone Pine, has existed in Colorado, USA, since the Oligocene. This tree species is one of the most long-lived of all known organisms, reaching greater ages even than the Sequoias. In Colorado it now occupies only very limited areas, all at or near timber-line, on the higher mountains. Its continued existence is, however, severely threatened by ‘souvenir hunters’who indiscriminately saw off ‘decorative’ branches, some of which have been around 600 years old and belonged to a tree perhaps over 1,000 years old. The increasingly easier access to Nature by powered vehicles poses a definite threat to the vegetation; in winter, snowmobiles and skidoos cause considerable damage, and now a kind of all-terrain vehicle has been constructed which may be even more destructive during the snow-free months. It runs either on wheels or tracks, can climb steep hills, and according to advertisements will ‘run over sticks and stones’. A plea is entered for Man to approach Nature with more reverence and humility.  相似文献
