Hormonal termination of larval diapause in Dermacentor albipictus

The molting hormone, alpha-ecdysone, and an analog triangle up(7)-5beta-cholestene-2beta,3beta, 14alpha-triol-6-one when applied externally, terminates diapause in larvae of the winter tick, Dermacentor albpictus. This is the first reported hormonal termination of diapause in an arthropod other than an insect.     

农药亚致死剂量对优姬蜂交配行为影响的研究

用１００×１０－６％农梦特和空白农梦特乳油，以及０．０１×１Ｏ－６％氯氰菊酯处理寄生于小菜蛾幼虫的优姬蜂雄蜂，观察农药亚致死剂量对优姬蜂交配行为的影响。结果表明，受农梦特处理的雄蜂只有６８．１８％在遇到雌蜂时引起翅膀扇动。在农梦特和氯氰菊酯处理中，雄蜂对雌蜂在交配行为上的反应迟钝，它们从试验开始到扇动翅膀的时间显著地比对照和空白农梦特乳油的推迟，其交配率分别为２７．２７％和５５％，交配抑制率分别为５３．６８％和３２．０６％。     

Oxygen fugacities directly measured in magmatic gases

An electrochemical device was used to measure the fugacity of oxygen (fo(o2)) in holes drilled through the crust of Makaopuhi lava lake, Kilauea Volcano, Hawaii. Results obtained within 6 months of the lake formation show that log fo(o2) normally varies linearly with the reciprocal of the absolute temperature, and that chemical changes occurring in the cooling tholeiitic basalt are reflected in the fo(o2) values measured in the holes.     

Sex chromosomes in lizards

Karyotypes of many species of the genus Sceloporus support the generalization that there are no morphologically recognizable sex chromosomes in lizards; however, there is a marked sexual dimorphism in the karyotypes of Sceloporus jarrovi and Sceloporus poinsetti. During meiosis in males, whose diploid number of chromosomes is 31, preferential segregation of chromosomes from a trivalent results in heterogamety.     

Imaging of intermittency in ripple-wave turbulence

The dynamics of a fluid surface filled with high-amplitude ripples were studied with a technique (diffusing light photography) that resolves the height at all locations instantaneously. Even when nonlinearities are strong enough to generate a (Kolmogorov) cascade from long wavelength (where energy is input) to shorter wavelength, the resulting turbulent state contains large coherent spatial structures. The appearance of these structures in a thermal equilibrium state (with the same average energy) would be highly improbable.
