In order to determine the usefulness of the goat as a model host for Ostertagia ostertagi, a series of experiments was conducted in which young goats and calves were experimentally infected with L3 of calf-source and goat-source isolates. The goat-source isolate was derived from a continuous passage of the bovine parasite in goats. Patent infections resulted in 73 out of 86 inoculated goats (85%). The largest number of patent infections was observed when inoculation consisted of a single dose of goat-source larvae. Percent establishment of infection was generally low in goats inoculated with either larval source. Time taken to achieve patency in goats was frequently within the range normal for cattle infections, but was often extended (21-67 days). With the exception of the generally higher level of establishment of goat- or calf-source isolates in calves and the low frequency of the vulval flap in adult female worms established in goats, little difference was observed in percent establishment or worm population characteristics of the two isolates in goats as based on source of larval inoculum, inoculation course, and age of host at inoculation. Prolonged passage of infection in goats did not result in stabilized isolate more adapted to the goat or less adapted to calves. Fecal egg counts were generally minimal or negative in goats during the first 30 days of infection, but were often increased and not substantially lower than counts in calf infections after 60 or 90 days. Low level egg counts in goats were observed to persist for up to 17 months. During the spring of 2 years, goat kids grazed on a cattle pasture acquired O. ostertagi infections which included adult worms, but a larger number of early L4. The latter were presumed to be inhibited in development just as such inhibition occurs in cattle during spring.  相似文献

Sixty-six Staphylococcus intermedius isolates from canine clinical specimens were tested for susceptibility to various antimicrobial agents by the Bauer-Kirby disk diffusion method and a commercial microdilution system. All isolates were susceptible to cephalothin, cloxacillin, gentamicin, methicillin, and vancomycin. Resistance to ampicillin, penicillin G, and tetracycline was frequent. There was an overall 87% agreement of results from the disk diffusion and microdilution methods for 10 antimicrobial agents. There was greater than or equal to 94% agreement between the 2 methods for 7 antimicrobics; discrepancies were minor.  相似文献

The histological and morphological characteristics of the scar tissue formed during healing after traumatic equine tendon injury have been compared with those of scar tissue produced in response to an enzyme-induced pony tendon injury. Several techniques are currently in use in the treatment of equine tendon sprain and this work formed part of a study of their respective efficacy. It was concluded that the enzyme-induced lesion is resolved by a reparative process very similar in its prognosis and extent to that following a naturally occurring tendon sprain. It may therefore justifiably be used as a model of naturally occurring tendon sprain in the comparative study of treatment methods.  相似文献

A system correlating climate with the annual risk of fascioliasis in cattle in central Louisiana was developed, using the Thornthwaite water budget and a 6-year data base that included records on herd prevalence rates, transmission to fluke-free sentinel calves, and snail population dynamics. The system developed was compared with modifications of the wet-day and Mt forecasting systems previously developed for use in the oceanic climate zone of western Europe. The wet-day system correlated poorly with transmission data, whereas the Mt and Thornthwaite water budget-derived systems correctly ranked 5 of the 6 years in terms of annual numbers of flukes transmitted to sentinel calves. Compared with the Mt system, the water budget-based system more closely correlated with transmission data, on the basis of statistical regression analysis. The water budget system was calculated by use of a microcomputer software program, and provided a means of measuring the effect of moisture stress and flooding in snail habitats that serve as foci of transmission of Fasciola hepatica to cattle on pastures.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted with sheep fed orchardgrass hay plus one of four supplements to evaluate use of a cheese processing wash water solid (WWS) material as a protein supplement. In both trials, lambs were fed either a cornstarch control (0% WWS-N) or a protein supplement containing 25, 50 or 75% N from WWS (25, 50 or 75% WWS-N, respectively). The majority of the remaining protein was supplied by soybean meal (SBM). Trial 1 was a replicated 4 x 4 extra-period Latin square. Protein supplementation increased total tract NDF and N digestibilities (P less than .10) 13% and 29%, respectively, compared with the cornstarch control. Total tract N digestibility was depressed (P less than .10) when 75% WWS-N (71.5%) vs 25 or 50% WWS-N (75.9 and 75.9%, respectively) was fed. Total VFA were depressed (P less than .10) 6 and 9 h postfeeding in sheep fed 75% WWS-N compared with the control (78.3 and 74.6 mM vs 98.8 and 94.6 mM for 6 and 9 h, respectively). Two hours postfeeding, lambs fed control had lower (P less than .10) ruminal pH compared with lambs fed 25, 50 and 75% WWS-N (6.2 vs 6.4, 6.5 and 6.5, respectively). Ruminal ammonia concentrations were 5 to 10 mg/dl lower (P less than .10) at all times in control lambs. In Trial 2, a metabolism study, feeding 75% WWS-N resulted in lower N digestibility (P less than .10) than did feeding 25% and 50% WWS-N (47.2 vs 56.4 and 55.2%, respectively). Data suggest that up to 50% of the SBM-N in a protein supplement for wethers may be replaced by WWS-N without adversely altering nutrient digestibility, ruminal fermentation or N metabolism.  相似文献

Three strains of mice, two susceptible to Ehrlichia risticii induced disease (balb/c and C3H/HeJ) and one resistant (akr/n), were evaluated for the development of Immoral and cell mediated immune responses following infection with E risticii. The production of serum antibody was determined by indirect fluorescent antibody testing of sera from mice of each strain challenged with one of three different dose levels of E risticii. Antibody was assayed on days 7, 9, 12, 15 and 20 after inoculation. Cell mediated immune responses were evaluated by measuring the blastogenesis response of spleen cells from E risticii infected mice 28 days after inoculation. All three strains of mice at the high challenge level responded with the production of antibody by day 9 after inoculation. Overall, the antibody response occurred earlier and was of greater magnitude in the susceptible balb/c and C3H/HeJ strains. A marked blastogenesis response occurred in splenocytes from E risticii infected mice of all three strains upon re-exposure to ehrlichial antigen. The findings of this study indicate that susceptibility to E risticii induced disease was not the result of deficient or delayed humoral immune responses and that E risticii infection induced the development of strong cell mediated immunity.  相似文献

The effect of level of protein intake on growth and calcium metabolism was studied in 24 foals. Starting at four months old, the foals were fed one of three diets containing all nutrients, with the exception of protein, at levels recommended by the United States National Research Council Subcommittee on Horse Nutrition for a 12 month period. The protein levels in the three diets were 9 per cent (low protein) 14 per cent (NRC recommended level) and 20 per cent (high protein). The foals fed the low protein diet were changed to the high protein diet after 140 days when they were nine months old. There were no significant differences in the rates of growth in weight, height, cannon circumference or in hoof growth and feed utilisation of the horses fed the 14 or the 20 per cent protein diets. However, growth, feed intake and feed utilisation by the foals fed the low (9 per cent) protein diet were significantly depressed. The average daily gains for the first 140 days for the 9, 14 and 20 per cent protein treatment groups were 64, 631 and 687 g in weight, 0.57, 0.83 and 0.87 mm in height and 0.04, 0.13 and 0.14 m in forecannon circumference, respectively. The average daily feed intakes for the 140 day period for the three groups were 2.7, 4.4 and 4.7 kg, respectively. After the change to the high protein diet the foals that had been fed the low protein diet maintained a higher rate of gain in bodyweight, height and cannon circumference, and utilised feed more efficiently than the other two groups throughout the second 140 days of the experiment.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

A 2-year-old female gyrfalcon (Falco rusticolus) was being used to hunt ducks in southeastern Wyoming during an outbreak of avian cholera in waterfowl and wild turkeys. While out overnight, the falcon consumed a bird. Within 24 hours the falcon was anorectic, and it was found dead approximately 48 hours following ingestion of wild prey. Gross and microscopic lesions were typical of avian cholera, and Pasteurella multocida serotype 1 was isolated from tissues of the falcon.  相似文献

A severe outbreak of Emory milkvetch poisoning in cattle and sheep occurred near Roswell, New Mexico, in the spring of 1975. Mortality averaged 2% to 3% and morbidity averaged 15% to 20%. Emory milkvetch collected from the infested area contained miserotoxin measured as 5 to 9 mg of NO2/g of plant (dry weight). Chicks fed extracts of Emory milkvetch showed toxic signs when fed one dose as 300 mg of NO2/kg of body weight, and died within 5 to 8 hours when fed milkvetch as 400 mg of NO2/kg. A sheep fed Emory milkvetch for 7 days in the form of 38 mg of NO2/kg/day developed signs of nitro poisoning on the 7th day. Cattle were poisoned or died when fed Emory milkvetch as 12 to 20 mg of NO2/ig for several days. The toxic signs observed in the field and under experimental conditions were similar.  相似文献
