Effect of cultural practices and fungicides on Phytophthora fruit rot of watermelon in the Carolinas 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

Phytophthora fruit rot of watermelon, caused by Phytophthora capsici, is an important and emerging disease in Southeastern U.S.A. The effects of two cultural practices (raised bare ground and raised plastic mulched beds) used for growing watermelon and different fungicide treatments on development of Phytophthora fruit rot were evaluated. The experiments were conducted over three years (2005-2008) at research stations in North Carolina and South Carolina, U.S.A. Fungicides were applied at weekly intervals on the diploid cv. Mickey Lee for an average of five applications. Fruit rot incidence was recorded at the end of each experiment. Fruit rot incidence in the non-treated plots was 66% across two states and six trials. Overall, the levels of fruit rot on the raised bare ground and raised plastic mulched beds were not significantly different. Based on percent disease reduction relative to the non-treated check plots, the fungicide Captan was the most effective across years and locations (range = 23-70%, mean = 57%), followed by mandipropamid (25-65%, mean = 50%), fluopicolide (24-65%, mean = 43%) and cyazofamid (0-48%, mean = 31%). Mefenoxam, the current standard treatment reduced fruit rot by 8-28% (mean = 18%). The addition of copper hydroxide to the spray mix did not significantly enhance effectiveness of Captan or mandipropamid. The variability in fungicide efficacy observed in these experiments across locations and years demonstrates the importance of environmental conditions in disease development and management. Even when the most effective fungicides are used, heavy losses may occur when conditions are highly favorable for disease development. Ultimately, effective control of Phytophthora fruit rot of watermelon will require an integrated management strategy that includes well-drained fields, water management and crop rotation in addition to fungicides. 相似文献

BACKGROUND: Herbicides that affect lipid metabolism have been used commercially for many years. Here, napropamide, diphenamid, dimethachlor and cafenstrole are compared; these have all been classified by the Herbicide Resistance Action Committee (HRAC) as K3 herbicides and inhibitors of cell division and/or synthesis of very‐long‐chain fatty acids (VLCFAs). In addition, spiro‐decanedione A and pinoxaden dione are compared as inhibitors of lipid synthesis through inhibition of acetyl‐CoA carboxylase (ACCase). RESULTS: Whereas the chloracetamide dimethachlor and the carboxyamide cafenstrole potently inhibited VLCFA synthesis in both barley and cucumber, the acetamides napropamide and diphenamid which are also classified as K3 herbicides and likewise the unclassified herbicide cinmethylin did not. The graminicide pinoxaden dione inhibited de novo fatty acid synthesis in barley, but not in cucumber, and correspondingly inhibited the plastid form of maize ACCase much more than the cytosolic form (IC50 values of 0.1 and 17 µM ). By contrast, spiro‐decanedione A exhibited herbicidal effects not only on grasses but also on broad leaves, strongly inhibited maize cytosolic ACCase and inhibited synthesis of VLCFAs in cucumber. CONCLUSIONS: The acetamides napropamide and diphenamid, which do not inhibit VLCFA synthesis, should be classified separately from K3 herbicides that do. We evaluated the spatial and temporal patterns of forest fires in two fire seasons (March to June and September to November) from 1996 to 2010 in Jilin Province, China, using the Canadian Forest Fire Weather Index System. Fire data were obtained from the Provincial Fire Agency, and historical climate records of daily weather observations were collected from 36 weather stations in Jilin and its neighboring provinces. A linear regression model was used to analyze linear trends between climate and fire weather indices with time treated as an independent variable. Correlation analysis was used to detect correlations between fire frequency, areas burned, and fire weather indices. A thin-plate smooth spline model was used to interpolate the point data of 36 weather stations to generate a surface covering the whole province. Our analyses indicated fire frequency and areas burned were significantly correlated with fire weather indices. Overall, the Canadian Forest Fire Weather Index System appeared to be work well for determining the fire danger rating in Jilin Province. Also, our analyses indicated that in the forthcoming decades, the overall fire danger in March and April should decrease across the province, but the chance of a large fire in these months would increase. The fire danger in the fall fire season would increase in the future, and the chance of large fire would also increase. Historically, because most fires have occurred in the spring in Jilin Province, such a shift in the future fire danger between the two fire seasons would be beneficial for the province’s fire management. 相似文献

Background
Large-scale genetic profiling, mapping and genetic association studies require access to a series of well-characterised and polymorphic microsatellite markers with distinct and broad allele ranges. Selection of complementary microsatellite markers with non-overlapping allele ranges has historically proved to be a bottleneck in the development of multiplex microsatellite assays. The antimicrobial effect of the nitrofuran derivative furazolidone at sub- and suprainhibitory concentrations on Salmonella enteritidis PT4 and the influence with regard to interaction with avian macrophages was investigated in this study. Phagocytosis of furazolidone-sensitive (FzS) S. enteritidis with chicken macrophages in the presence of furazolidone at concentrations of 1/8, 1/4, 1/2 and 8x MIC resulted in an increase in the rate of phagocytic killing of approximately 3-, 6-, 6.5- and 9-fold, respectively, with 1/2 and 8x MIC concentrations producing statistically significant (P<0.05) increases in phagocytosis. Treatment of the FzS Salmonella with furazolidone at concentrations of 4x and 10x MIC, for 15 min prior to phagocytosis, also significantly (P<0.005) increased phagocytic uptake when compared with untreated bacteria. The rate of phagocytosis monitored over 90 min was highest between 30 and 60 min with the furazolidone pretreated salmonella, compared with the delayed rate of the control between 60 and 90 min. Exposure of FzS and FzR strains with suprainhibitory concentrations of furazolidone at 4x, 8x and 10x MIC for 30 min prior to phagocytosis demonstrated an increase in bacterial killing. Exposure of strains to sub-inhibitory concentrations of furazolidone led to an increase in chemiluminescence during phagocytosis with macrophages, suggesting an increase in oxidative metabolism in the macrophages as a result of an increase in activation and phagocytosis. Pretreatment of the strains with suprainhibitory concentrations of furazolidone for 30 min prior to phagocytosis demonstrated a similar increase in oxidative metabolism in the macrophages. Measurement of the amount of 14C-furazolidone associated with chicken macrophages was determined over 20 h incubation. The level of radioactivity of 14C-furazolidone alone was used to estimate the amount of cell-associated nitrofuran when incubated with the macrophages by means of regression analysis. Incubation with concentrations of 16, 32 and 64 microg/ml for 20 h resulted in the cell association of >or=1 microg/ml of furazolidone, which is the concentration required for the agent to exhibit bactericidal activity on furazolidone-sensitive Salmonella strains. Furazolidone was able to reduce intracellular salmonella viability at all concentrations, but total killing was achieved only with concentrations of >or=8 microg/ml, which supports the results for furazolidone association with the macrophages. This substantiates that the bioactivity of the nitrofuran was not inhibited or diminished in the intracellular environment of the macrophage and that exposure of salmonella to nitrofurans enhances phagocytosis. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine change over time in sero-prevalence of antibodies against Lawsonia intracellularis among growing-finishing pigs housed in indoor versus outdoor facilities. DESIGN: Serologic survey. ANIMALS: 93 pigs born to seropositive gilts and raised in indoor (n = 49) or outdoor (44) growing-finishing facilities. PROCEDURE: Blood samples were collected from the pigs 2, 6, 10, 14, 18, 22, and 26 weeks after birth and tested for antibodies against L intracellularis with an indirect immunofluorescence assay. RESULTS: None of the pigs were seropositive 2 or 6 weeks after birth.Ten weeks after birth, 74% and 76% of pigs in indoor and outdoor growing-finishing facilities were seropositive, respectively, whereas 14 weeks after birth, the percentage of pigs in indoor growing-finishing facilities that were seropositive was substantially higher than the percentage of pigs in outdoor facilities that were. From 18 weeks after birth to the end of the study, none of the pigs in outdoor growing-finishing facilities were seropositive, whereas low percentages of pigs in indoor facilities were seropositive 18, 22, and 26 weeks after birth. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results suggest that seroprevalence of antibodies against L intracellularis decreases faster among growing-finishing pigs housed in outdoor facilities than among growing-finishing pigs housed in indoor facilities. 相似文献

Grazing herbivores avoid grass swards contaminated with faeces as the ingestion of faeces is a common route of micro- and macro-parasite transmission. The recent novel finding that herbivores do not avoid grass swards contaminated with rabbit faeces suggests that disease risk posed to herbivores by rabbits is determined by rabbit ranging and excretory behaviour. Using as a case study rabbits and the risk Mycobacterium avium sub-species paratuberculosis (M. a. paratuberculosis) poses to cattle, the interaction between rabbits and grazing pasture was studied on an infected farm in the east of Scotland in spring and autumn 2000. Radio telemetry, burrow surveys and faecal pellet count data were collected on two areas (Areas 1 and 2) of the farm with different habitat mosaics, to study the potential effects of season and habitat on the spatial distribution of rabbits faeces and thus disease in the environment. Twenty one rabbits were radio tracked and a total of 902 fixes collected. Mean home range sizes (100% minimum convex polygons) were between 2.0 and 7.1 ha per rabbit per season. Home ranges were significantly larger in spring, and in Area 1 which had more moor and woodland and less rough pasture. Rabbits used rough pasture most in Area 1 and gorse scrub in Area 2. In both areas, significantly more burrows were located in gorse scrub than in any other habitat. Most faecal pellets were deposited on the moorland habitat of Area 2 in autumn. In habitats to which grazing livestock had access, the mean rate of faecal deposition was 8571 pellets per ha per day. The greatest risk of disease transmission occurred in habitats of poor grazing quality (e.g., gorse scrub) which were used by rabbits for burrowing and thus contained high concentrations of faeces. The findings of the study are discussed in relation to management practices aimed at reducing disease risk to livestock, including the fencing of scrub and the reduction of rabbit population size to prevent expansion of rabbit burrows from scrub into grazing pastures. 相似文献
