The maximal conduction velocities of compound-action potentials in the proximal and distal parts of the saphenous nerve were determined by averaging potentials evoked and recorded through needle electrodes. Antidromic, triphasic compound-action potentials unipolarly recorded from the distal part of the saphenous nerve were of the same minimal latency as potentials having 4 phases which were recorded bipolarly from the same site. However, the unipolarly recorded potentials were of greater amplitude. Monophasic compound-action potentials were recorded through bipolar chlorided silver electrodes from the surface of fascicles of the distal part of the saphenous nerve. The maximal conduction velocity of these potentials was in agreement with the conduction velocity of compound-action potentials of the distal part of the saphenous nerve which were evoked and recorded through subcutaneous needle electrodes. The specificities of the stimulating and recording sites were verified by recording before and after the saphenous nerve was cut between the stimulating and recording sites. Mean conduction velocities were 62.3 +/- 2.0 m/s for the distal part of the saphenous nerve and 66.3 +/- 2.2 m/s for the proximal part of the saphenous nerve. Reflex-evoked muscle activity was elicited in the ipsilateral tensor muscle of the fascia lata and semimembranous muscle after electrical stimulation of the saphenous nerve through subcutaneous needle electrodes. The effects of various stimulus intensities on the latency and duration of these reflex-evoked muscle potentials were determined.  相似文献

Compound-action potentials (CAP) were recorded directly from the surface of fascicles of the distal portion of the saphenous nerve (SN) of dogs in situ. Potentials were evoked through needle electrodes and were recorded through bipolar stainless steel electrodes. Stimuli of 10-microseconds duration and of 0.4 +/- 0.15-mA amplitude evoked a monophasic CAP. Sensory conduction velocities of afferent fibers, the action potentials of which contributed to this evoked compound potential, ranged from 62.4 +/- 2.8 m/s for the most rapidly conducting fibers to 30.5 +/- 2.4 m/s for the least rapidly conducting fibers. Stimuli of 25-microseconds duration and of 2.2 +/- 0.8-mA amplitude evoked a second, longer latency CAP in addition to the first CAP. Sensory conduction velocities of afferent fibers, the action potentials of which contributed to this evoked compound potential, ranged from 20.4 +/- 2.9 m/s for the most rapidly conducting fibers to 13.7 +/- 1.0 m/s for the least rapidly conducting fibers. Low-amplitude, negative peaks were recorded between the first and second major potentials elicited by the longer duration stimuli. Stimuli of still longer duration and higher currents induced contractions of the caudal part of the sartorius muscle by current spread in 9 of 12 dogs. In 3 dogs, a third monophasic CAP was evoked, having a maximal conduction velocity of 1.7 +/- 0.2 m/s. After section of the distal portion of the SN on one side in each of 2 dogs, an absence of signs of sensory deficit was found on clinical neurologic examination. The area of cutaneous innervation of the cranial branch of the distal portion of the SN was determined electrophysiologically.  相似文献

SUMMARY The diagnostic performance of plasma tests for muscle enzymes was measured in sheep from flocks affected by clinical and sub-clinical nutritional myopathy. Parallel combinations of tests for creatine kinase (CK), alanine amino transferase (ALT), aspartate amino transferase (AST) and lactate dehydrogenase had higher diagnostic sensitivity than CK alone. The enzymes ALT and AST showed the highest correlation with the degree of muscle damage. A parallel combination of tests for plasma CK and ALT as well as tests for plasma α-tocopherol and red cell glutathione peroxidase are recommended for the diagnosis of nutritional myopathy and a decision on the appropriate treatment. The number of false negative results based on a diagnosis from the microscopic examination of single muscles was higher than for the parallel combination of tests. The number of false negatives was highest for the vastus intermedius and lowest for the tensor fascia lata. Diagnosis using a panel of blood tests has the advantages of overcoming problems of inadequate muscle sampling, a larger number of sheep in the flock can be tested and a more rapid diagnosis can be obtained.  相似文献

To determine whether there is a day-to-day variation in insulin sensitivity in cats, we subjected six clinically normal cats to four insulin-modified frequently sampled intravenous glucose tolerance tests (FSIVGTTs) over 7 days. The insulin-modified FSIVGTTs were analysed by the minimal model method. Minimal model insulin sensitivity (S(I)) averaged 2.9+/-0.4 x 10(-4) min(-1)/microU/ml (range 1.9-4.6 x 10(-4) min(-1)/microU/ml), with a mean interday coefficient of variation (CV) of 35.4+/-6.4% (range 12.8-58.5%). Glucose effectiveness (S(G)) averaged 0.029+/-0.002 min(-1)(range 0.024-0.037 min(-1)), and showed less interday variability with a mean CV of 24.7+/-4.3% (range 7.9-39.3%). Insulin sensitivity was also measured after a short-term stressor (5-min spray bath) of sufficient magnitude to elevate blood glucose levels. The mean insulin sensitivity after the stressor was 3.6+/-0.8 x 10(-4) min(-1)/microU/ml (range 1.6-7.3 x 10(-4) min(-1)/microU/ml), which was not significantly different to the mean insulin sensitivity before the short-term stressor (P=0.237). The mean glucose effectiveness after the stressor was 0.046+/-0.004 min(-1)(range 0.032-0.057 min(-1)), which was significantly different from mean glucose effectiveness before the short-term stressor (P=0.003). We conclude that insulin sensitivity is highly variable from day to day in normal cats, and that hyperglycaemia in response to short-term stressors is probably due to increased hepatic glucose production, rather than peripheral insulin resistance.  相似文献

Tree-based intercropping (TBI) systems, combining agricultural alley crops with rows of hardwood trees, are largely absent in Canada. We tested the hypothesis that the roots of 5–8 years old hybrid poplars, growing in two TBI systems in southern Québec, would play a “safety-net” role of capturing nutrients leaching below the rooting zone of alley crops. TBI research plots at each site were trenched to a depth of 1 m on each side of an alley. Control plots were left with tree roots intact. In each treatment at each site, leachate at 70 cm soil depth was repeatedly sampled over two growing seasons using porous cup tension lysimeters, and analyzed for nutrient concentrations. Daily water percolation rates were estimated with the forest hydrology model ForHyM. Average nutrient concentrations for all days between consecutive sampling dates were multiplied by water percolation rates, yielding daily nutrient leaching loss estimates for each sampling step. We estimated that tree roots in the TBI system established on clay loam soil decreased subsoil NO3 leaching by 227 kg N ha−1 and 30 kg N ha−1 over two consecutive years, and decreased dissolved organic N (DON) leaching by 156 kg N ha−1 year−1 in the second year of the study. NH4 + leaching losses at the same site were higher when roots were present, but were 1–2 orders of magnitude lower than NO3 or DON leaching. At the sandy textured site, the safety net role of poplar roots with respect to N leaching was not as effective, perhaps because N leaching rates exceeded root N uptake by a wider margin than at the clay loam site. At the sandy textured site, significant and substantial reductions of sodium leaching were observed where tree roots were present. At both sites, tree roots reduced DON concentrations and the ratio of DON to inorganic N, perhaps by promoting microbial acquisition of DON through rhizodeposition. This study demonstrated a potential safety-net role by poplar roots in 5–8 year-old TBI systems in cold temperate regions.  相似文献

Objectives were to evaluate effects of feeding a calcium salt rich in linoleic and trans -octadecenoic acids (LTFA) on synthesis of prostaglandin F based on its metabolite (PGFM), uterine involution and pregnancy rates in lactating dairy cows. Five hundred and eleven Holstein cows were blocked according to parity, body condition score and milk yield in the previous lactation. Primiparous and multiparous cows were randomly assigned to one of the two treatments consisting of calcium salt (2% diet dry matter) of either palm oil (PO) or LTFA from 25 days prepartum to 80 days of lactation. Cows were time-inseminated at 70 ± 3 days postpartum. Feeding LTFA tended (p = 0.08) to decrease the incidence of puerperal metritis (15.1% vs 8.8%). Primiparous cows supplemented with LTFA showed larger increase in plasma PGFM concentration at day 1 postpartum (17018 vs 6897 p m ). Pregnancy rate after first insemination tended (p = 0.07) to be greater at 27 days after insemination (37.9% vs 28.6%), and was greater (p = 0.05) at 41 days after insemination (35.5% vs 25.8%) for cows fed LTFA compared with PO. These results indicate that unsaturated fatty acids fed in a rumen inert form have the potential to modulate reproductive events and improve pregnancy rates in lactating dairy cows.  相似文献

Soil test indicators are needed to predict the contribution of soil organic N to crop N requirements. Labile organic matter (OM) fractions containing C and N are readily metabolized by soil microorganisms, which leads to N mineralization and contributes to the soil N supply to crops. The objective of this study was to identify labile OM fractions that could be indicators of the soil N supply by evaluating the relationship between the soil N supply, the C and N concentrations, and C/N ratios of water extractable OM, hot‐water extractable OM, particulate OM, microbial biomass, and salt extractable OM. Labile OM fractions were measured before planting spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) in fertilized soils and the soil N supply was determined from the wheat N uptake and soil mineral N concentration after 6 weeks. Prior to the study, fertilized sandy loam and silty clay soils received three annual applications of 90 kg available N (ha · y)?1 from mineral fertilizer, liquid dairy cattle manure, liquid swine manure or solid poultry litter, and there was a zero‐N control. Water extractable organic N was the only labile OM fraction to be affected by fertilization in both soil types (P < 0.01). Across both test soils, the soil N supply was significantly correlated with the particulate OM N (r = 0.87, P < 0.001), the particulate OM C (r = 0.83, P < 0.001), and hot‐water extractable organic N (r = 0.81, P < 0.001). We conclude that pre‐planting concentrations of particulate OM and hot‐water extractable organic N could be early season indicators of the soil N supply in fertilized soils of the Saint Lawrence River Lowlands in Quebec, Canada. The suitability of these pre‐planting indicators to predict the soil N supply under field conditions and in fertilized soils from other regions remains to be determined.  相似文献

Pulmonary alveolar microlithiasis (PAM) is a rare, familial disease of unknown aetiology characterised by intra‐alveolar formation and accumulation of microliths. Multiple formalin‐fixed tissues were submitted from a 5‐month‐old female alpaca that died suddenly without significant clinical signs. No gross abnormalities were observed on postmortem examination. Histological findings included PAM and severe centrilobular hepatic necrosis. Although the hepatic lesion was the likely cause of death, PAM was an incidental finding that has not been reported previously in alpacas. An overview of PAM, including pathogenesis and histopathological characteristics, are discussed in relation to the concurrent hepatic disease in the present case.  相似文献

The Hong Kong Environmental ProtectionDepartment (HK EPD) monitoring data for SO2, NO, NO2and O3 from 1995 and 1996 at three stations spanning thelength of Hong Kong have been analyzed in the contexts ofselected meteorological parameters, and the types of synopticweather system. High level and episode days were definedaccording to two criteria. Higher pollutant gas concentrationswere found for systems involving the transport of continentalair masses to Hong Kong (cold front (type CF), north/northeastmonsoon (type NE)), or when tropical cyclones approached (typeAC) Hong Kong. Lower concentrations were observed when thecleaner maritime southerly (type S) airstreams were incidentat Hong Kong. Most notably, tropical cyclones (type C)ventilated and diluted local pollution. Days with high levelsof SO2, NO and NO2 were generally characterized bylow windspeed and lower relative humidity conditions. Bycontrast, high concentrations of O3 occurred both underlow windspeed conditions (type AC) and under the advection ofa continental air mass, generally at high windspeeds. Thediurnal variation of O3 levels is discussed: destructionis more important than production in determining local levels.  相似文献
