Efficient hybrid wheat breeding requires the redesign of the wheat floral architecure to enhance cross-pollination. Several studies evaluated the phenotypic variation and the genetic architecture of male floral traits, but their contribution to the most important trait, hybrid seed set on the female parent, has not yet been considered. To bridge this gap, we employed 31 male lines and evaluated the hybrid seed set on two female tester lines in crossing blocks. Hybrid seed set showed large genetic variance and high heritability, which demonstrates the potential for the improvement of this trait. However, the assessment of hybrid seed set is difficult as secondary traits like plant height and especially flowering time, as well as the environment largely influence the hybrid seed set. Nevertheless, a moderately high correlation between visual anther extrusion and hybrid seed set opens up the possibility to use visual anther extrusion as an indirect trait for preliminary male screenings. Further research evaluating traits influencing female receptivity coupled with genomics-assisted approaches are highly recommended to develop an improved selection portfolio for maximizing hybrid seed set. 相似文献

Lymphocyte survival during immune responses is controlled by the relative expression of pro- and anti-apoptotic molecules, regulating the magnitude, quality, and duration of the response. We investigated the consequences of deleting genes encoding the anti-apoptotic molecules Mcl1 and Bcl2l1 (Bcl-x(L)) from B cells using an inducible system synchronized with expression of activation-induced cytidine deaminase (Aicda) after immunization. This revealed Mcl1 and not Bcl2l1 to be indispensable for the formation and persistence of germinal centers (GCs). Limiting Mcl1 expression reduced the magnitude of the GC response with an equivalent, but not greater, effect on memory B cell formation and no effect on persistence. Our results identify Mcl1 as the main anti-apoptotic regulator of activated B cell survival and suggest distinct mechanisms controlling survival of GC and memory B cells. 相似文献

Electromagnetically induced transparency is a quantum interference effect observed in atoms and molecules, in which the optical response of an atomic medium is controlled by an electromagnetic field. We demonstrated a form of induced transparency enabled by radiation-pressure coupling of an optical and a mechanical mode. A control optical beam tuned to a sideband transition of a micro-optomechanical system leads to destructive interference for the excitation of an intracavity probe field, inducing a tunable transparency window for the probe beam. Optomechanically induced transparency may be used for slowing and on-chip storage of light pulses via microfabricated optomechanical arrays. 相似文献

This study investigated the applicability of two human radio-immunoassays (RIA) to detect epinephrine (EPI), norepinephrine (NE), and their O-methylated metabolites metanephrine (MN) and normetanephrine (NMN) in canine plasma. The analysis yielded a positive correlation between metabolites and their respective parent compounds: EPI and MN (r = 0.63), NE and NMN (r = 0.47), as well as between parent compounds, EPI and NE (r = 0.48), and between metabolites MN and NMN (r = 0.71). Moreover, EPI (r = 0.99) and NE (r = 0.77) concentrations determined by RIA did correlate positively with high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC). However, there was limited agreement between both methods. It was concluded that complete validation tests for accuracy, precision and agreement are needed before this RIA can be applied to quantify catecholamines, metanephrine, and normetanephrine in canine plasma. The assay may prove to be a potential alternative to HPLC or tandem mass spectrometry in the work-up of pheochromocytoma and the detection of overall sympathetic activity in dogs. 相似文献

ObjectiveTo test the compensatory role of endothelin-1 when acute blood loss is superimposed on anaesthesia, by characterizing the effect of systemic endothelin receptor subtype A (ETA) blockade on the haemodynamic and hormonal responses to haemorrhage in dogs anaesthetized with xenon/remifentanil (X/R) or isoflurane/remifentanil (I/R).Study designProspective experimental randomized controlled study.AnimalsSix female Beagle dogs, 13.4 ± 1.3 kg.MethodsAnimals were anaesthetized with remifentanil 0.5 μg kg?1 minute?1 plus either 0.8% isoflurane (I/R) or 63% xenon (X/R), with and without (Control) the systemic intravenous endothelin receptor subtype A antagonist atrasentan (four groups, n = 6 each). After 60 minutes of baseline anaesthesia, the dogs were bled (20 mL kg?1) over 5 minutes and hypovolemia was maintained for 1 hour. Continuous haemodynamic monitoring was performed via femoral and pulmonary artery catheters; vasoactive hormones were measured before and after haemorrhage.ResultsIn Controls, systemic vascular resistance (SVR), vasopressin and catecholamine plasma concentrations were higher with X/R than with I/R anaesthesia at pre-haemorrhage baseline. The peak increase after haemorrhage was higher during X/R than during I/R anaesthesia (SVR 7420 ± 867 versus 5423 ± 547 dyne seconds cm?5; vasopressin 104 ± 23 versus 44 ± 6 pg mL?1; epinephrine 2956 ± 310 versus 177 ± 99 pg mL?1; norepinephrine 862 ± 117 versus 195 ± 33 pg mL?1, p < 0.05). Haemorrhage reduced central venous pressure from 3 ± 1 to 1 ± 1 cmH2O (I/R, ns) and from 8 ± 1 to 5 ± 1 cmH2O (X/R, p < 0.05), but did not reduce mean arterial pressure, nor cardiac output. Atrasentan did not alter the haemodynamic and hormonal response to haemorrhage during either anaesthetic protocol.Conclusions and clinical relevanceSelective ETA receptor blockade with atrasentan did not impair the haemodynamic and hormonal compensation of acute haemorrhage during X/R or I/R anaesthesia in dogs. 相似文献

Grain yield often varies within agricultural fields as a result of the variation in soil characteristics, competition from
weeds, management practices and their causal interactions. To implement appropriate management decisions, yield variability
needs to be explained and quantified. A new experimental design was established and tested in a field experiment to detect
yield variation in relation to the variation in soil quality, the heterogeneity of weed distribution and weed control within
a field. Weed seedling distribution and density, apparent soil electrical conductivity (ECa) and grain yield were recorded and mapped in a 3.5 ha winter wheat field during 2005 and 2006. A linear mixed model with
an anisotropic spatial correlation structure was used to estimate the effect of soil characteristics, weed competition and
herbicide treatment on crop yield. The results showed that all properties had a strong effect on grain yield. By adding herbicide
costs and current grain price into the model, thresholds of weed density were derived for site-specific weed control. This
experimental approach enables the variation of yield within agricultural fields to be explained, and an understanding of the
effects on yield of the factors that affect it and their causal interactions to be gained. The approach can be applied to

Azaspiracids (AZA) are polyether marine toxins that accumulate in various shellfish species and have been associated with severe gastrointestinal human intoxications since 1995. This toxin class has since been reported from several countries, including Morocco and much of western Europe. A regulatory limit of 160 microg AZA/kg whole shellfish flesh was established by the EU in order to protect human health; however, in some cases, AZA concentrations far exceed the action level. Herein we discuss recent advances on the chemistry of various AZA analogs, review the ecology of AZAs, including the putative progenitor algal species, collectively interpret the in vitro and in vivo data on the toxicology of AZAs relating to human health issues, and outline the European legislature associated with AZAs. 相似文献

Chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) restriction site analysis of nine species of Daucus (covering four of five sections) and nine carrot
accessions was done using 14 Petunia cpDNA clones as probes and 10 restriction enzymes. Cladistic analysis yielded a phylogeny
generally concordant with a recent morphological classification. A cpDNA insertion-deletion mutation was found in the cultivated
carrots (probe P10– Bgl II digest). Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) restriction site analysis of the same material using four maize
mtDNA clones as probes and 10 enzymes exhibited extensive mitochondrial diversity in Daucus, both within and between sections.
