The effects of three cotton-based cropping systems on soil properties, black root rot severity, and growth of cotton in a Vertisol were evaluated after a series of floods in eastern Australia. The experimental treatments, which had been imposed since 1985, were conventionally and minimum-tilled continuous cotton, and minimum-tilled cotton–wheat rotation. Frequent rainfall and flooding during the winter of 1998 resulted in near saturated soil at spring sowing in October. Although conventional tillage operations were completed before flooding, minimum tillage operations were not possible due to excessive moisture and cotton was sown onto the old beds with no-tillage. Soil specific volume (electrical conductivity of a 1:5 soil:water suspension) EC1:5, exchangeable Na content, pH and organic C were determined for the top 0.6 m of the profile in summer 1998 and again in 1999. Organic C in the surface 0.10 m was also evaluated during 1998–2000. Black root rot severity and mycorrhizal fungal colonisation were evaluated at 6 weeks after sowing. Tissue nutrient concentrations were measured in mature cotton plants. Cotton lint yield and fibre quality were evaluated after picking and ginning.
In comparison with either minimum- or conventionally tilled continuous cotton, minimum-tilled cotton–wheat rotation had the lowest exchangeable Na content and severity of bacterial black root rot, best surface structure and the highest crop growth, nutrient uptake and lint yields. Subsoil structure was the best with conventionally tilled continuous cotton. The 1998 floods appear to have decreased exchangeable Na and increased soil pH in all treatments. Surface organic C also decreased between 1998 and 2000. Soil structural damage was minimised by avoiding tillage and trafficking in wet conditions. Compared with 1998, average yield decreases in 1999 were of the order of 43%. Cotton lint fibre quality was also poorer in 1999. 相似文献
An inventory of plant species was conducted on farms, farm boundaries and homesteads in the Kilimanjaro agroforestry system. The survey covered 30 farms in 6 villages in Hai District on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania. Over 100 plant species spread over 40 families were identified and their uses obtained through interviews with farmers. The species identified include 53 tree species, 29 food crop species, 21 non-woody plants of economic value and 8 weed species. The food crops, trees and other economically useful plants are carefully chosen by the local farmers and intimately intercropped on the same unit of land. In most cases, the plants had two or more uses of which food, fuelwood, medicine, poles, timber and fodder were the most important. 相似文献
The economic benefits of treating lactating cows for Streptococcus agalactiae mastitis were studied at a large (689 milking cows) central California dairy. Postcure milk production of case cows (infected, treated, and cured) was compared with production of paired control cows (uninfected) and was matched for yield, days in milk, days in gestation, and parity. A simulation was used to plot expected lactation curves for mastitic cows (infected, not treated) with characteristics similar to those of each control cow, and these curves were compared with actual case-cow lactation curves. The difference in actual and expected production was used to calculate net economic benefits of treatment. Comparison of expected with actual production indicated a net benefit from treatment of $396/cow for cows treated in early lactation and $237 for cows treated in midlactation, but a net loss of $55 for cows treated in late lactation. Lactation number did not have a significant impact on economic benefits of treatment. In contrast to other studies indicating no economic benefit from treating mastitis during lactation, this study's positive results may have been attributable to the high cure rate (98%) and the subclinical form of mastitis being treated. Streptococcus agalactiae mastitis treatment during early and midlactation would appear to be an economically justifiable option for dairy managers. 相似文献
When spin label is added to Chlamydomonas the organism is apparently unaffected, but the paramagnetic resonance signal of the spin label decreases. Irradiation with visible light greatly accelerates this decrease, which is partially reversible. If the cells are grown in the presence of the spin label and washed well, no spin label signal is detectable. However, such cells can no longer catalyze the destruction of added spin label in the light. OBJECTIVE: To determine the accuracy and precision of dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) for measuring bone mineral density in horses in situ. Sample Population-12 randomly selected forelimbs from 12 horses. PROCEDURE: Metacarpi were scanned in 2 planes and DEXA measurements obtained for 6 regions of interest (ROI). Each ROI was isolated and bone density measured by Archimedes' principle. Linear regression analysis was used to determine the correlation between the 2 measurements at each ROI. An additional metacarpus was measured 10 times to determine the coefficient of variation for both techniques. RESULTS: Dual energy x-ray absorptiometry and bone density were significantly associated at multiple ROI. The addition of age, weight, and soft tissue or bone thickness improved these associations. Repeated measurements had a low coefficient of variation. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Dual energy x-ray absorptiometry can be used to accurately and precisely measure the bone density in the equine metacarpus. Dual energy x-ray absorptiometry appears suitable for serial in vivo measurement of bone density of the equine metacarpus. Dual energy x-ray absorptiometry may be used for studies to evaluate the effects of diet or drugs on bone density or density changes from bone remodeling that develop prior to stress fractures. 相似文献
