Digital perfusion pressure (DPP) equals mean arterial pressure (MAP) at the hoof coronet minus digital interstitial pressure (DIP) within the hoof. To test whether lamellar blood flow (LBF) changes proportionately to DPP, anesthesia was induced and maintained with isoflurane in six horses to target a MAP of 60 mmHg. Arterial, venous, and hoof interstitial pressures were measured in each pelvic limb. LBF was measured using fluorescent microspheres during dobutamine infusions targeting either 60 (low), 80 (medium), or 100 (high) mmHg MAP. Following euthanasia, hoof lamina was collected for microsphere isolation. To reduce intra-individual variability, medium and high pressures and flows were divided by their respective low pressure and flow baseline values, yielding indexed variables of ΔLBF and ΔDPP. The ΔLBF correlated negatively with the ΔDPP. We conclude that LBF was not solely determined by passive pressure-flow relationships and that systemic hypertension may not effectively increase dermal LBF in horses.  相似文献

The focus of this report was to document the electroencephalogram (EEG) findings associated with nonislet cell tumour-induced hypoglycaemia (NICTH) in a racing Thoroughbred mare subsequently diagnosed with renal carcinoma and carcinomatosis. We evaluated cortical cerebral activity and confirmed paroxysmal activity consistent with subclinical seizures by performing an EEG prior to onset of clinical signs of seizures. We showed that the electrical activity pattern progressed in a similar fashion as in humans with severe, progressive hypoglycaemia and presumed neuroglycopenia. The glycaemic threshold for abnormalities detected in EEG showed that abnormal electrical cortical activity appeared when blood glucose dropped to 44 mg/dL (2.4 mmol/L) and paroxysmal activity spread, becoming generalised when blood glucose dropped to 23 mg/dL (1.3 mmol/L). NICTH is an uncommon paraneoplastic phenomenon in several species. In horses, NICTH has been reported most frequently in primary renal tumours, followed by primary hepatic tumours. This report highlights the importance of investigating the possibility of hypoglycaemia in cases of horses that present altered state of consciousness with or without intermittent seizures. This case report also highlights that the diagnostic work-up for horses presenting with episodic hypoglycaemia should comprise investigation of possible neoplasia, as paraneoplastic hypoglycaemia should be included in the list of differentials of horses with hypoglycaemia.  相似文献

Java was hot and there were other discomforts, but all who were present at the congress returned to their homes appreciative of the charms and manifold subjects of scientific and other kinds of interest of what is perhaps the most fascinating of tropical islands, deeply grateful for the courtesies and hospitality extended to them and convinced that the Fourth Pacific Science Congress was the most successful of that series of congresses. Thanks are due all of those who contributed to the social enjoyment and the scientific accomplishments of the congress, but it may be permissible to emphasize the part played by the general president, Dr. Otto de Vries. He showed capacity in the organization of the congress, his handling of all matters connected with it was tactful and his genial personality endeared him to every one. A transmission electron microscope study was undertaken to investigate the details of the synovial tendon sheath and bursal lining in horses. The lining cells appeared to be fibroblasts and were buried in a finely granular ground substance. Generally these cells had poor cytoplasmic organelles, sparse short profiles of rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER), few scattered ribosomes and, occasionally, a poorly developed Golgi complex. However, a few lining cells appeared more active, having pronounced RER with dilated cisternane. The surface of the lining cells, particularly those with dilated RER, had filipodia of different shapes, which in some instances appeared to surround a detached matrix. This feature might indicate that these cells are capable of phagocytosis. In young animals, the lining was more or less akin to that of the adult. However, the lining cells were virtually indistinguishable from the fibroblasts in the subconnective tissue.  相似文献

The high voltage electrophoresis bioautography method is applicable to meat, milk, and animal feeds. Meat is freeze-dried, powdered, and extracted with acetonitrile-water (9 + 1), and the extract is concentrated by evaporation at room temperature. Milk is examined directly or following acetonitrile-water extraction. Feed is extracted with acetonitrile-water. Samples or extracts are applied to preliminary assay plates of antibiotic medium No. 1 at pH 6 and 8, seeded with Micrococcus luteus (ATCC 9341), M. luteus DHSR (ATCC 9341A), Bacillus cereus (ATCC 11778), or B. cereus K250 TR (NCIB 11183), and nutrient agar at pH 7 seeded with B. subtilis BGA. Inactivation of penicillinase indicates beta-lactam antibiotics. Addition of trimethoprim increases sensitivity to sulfonamides. After 18-24 h incubation at 30 degrees C, plates yielding clear inhibition zones guide selection of conditions for subsequent electrophoresis bioautography. Extracts are applied (5-100 microL) to 10 mm diameter wells on electrophoresis plates 60 cm long and 40 cm wide, with a gel depth of 1.6 mm. The support medium is 1% agar and 1% agarose in Tris/succinic acid buffers pH 6 and pH 8. A potential of 1500 V is applied for 1.5 h at 15 degrees C. Following electrophoresis, the migrated antibiotics are visualized by over-layering with antibiotic medium No. 1, pH 6 or 8, seeded with M. luteus or B. cereus spore suspension; plates are incubated for 18-24 h at 30 degrees C. Identification is based on results of preliminary screening together with electrophoretic migration distances and inhibition zone appearances compared with standards.  相似文献

In this prospective, exploratory study, we evaluated the positioning accuracy in a group of 15 dogs undergoing fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy for tumors affecting the head, using a modified human maxillary fixation device (Elekta Fraxion? system). Positioning was assessed using on‐board volumetric imaging, with a six‐degrees‐of‐freedom image registration technique. Prior to treatment delivery, CBCT images were obtained and patient alignment was corrected, in both translational and rotational planes, using a six‐degrees‐of‐freedom robotic patient positioning system (HexaPOD Evo RT System). The maximum angular inter‐fraction motions observed were 6.1° (yaw), 10.9° (pitch), and 4.5° (roll). The mean systematic translational errors were 4.7, 2.6, and 2.3 mm, mean random translational errors were 3.0, 2.2, and 2.5 mm, and mean overall translational errors were 2.4, 0.7, and 2.3 mm in the cranial‐caudal, lateral, and dorsal‐ventral directions, respectively. The mean systematic rotational errors were 1.17°, 0.77°, and 1.43°, the mean rotational random errors were 1.65°, 1.46°, and 1.34° and the mean overall rotational errors were 0.56°, 0.22°, and 0.29° in the yaw, pitch, and roll directions, respectively. The mean error of the three‐dimensional vector was 6.9 mm with a standard deviation of 3.8 mm. Ninety‐five percent of the three‐dimensional vectors were <14.8 mm. This study demonstrates that this maxillary fixation device relies on six‐degrees‐of‐freedom registration and an ability to apply corrections using a six‐degrees‐of‐freedom couch for accurate patient positioning and tumor targeting. Its use in conformal radiation therapy in dogs is not recommended.  相似文献

A study was carried out to assess the feasibility of monitoring the exposure of barn owls (Tyto alba) to an anticoagulant rodenticide, flocoumafen, by analysis of residues in regurgitated pellets following consumption of flocoumafen-contaminated mice. Mice were fed on a diet containing [14C]flocoumafen, equivalent to 12 mg kg?1, and killed 24 h later. A single [14C]flocoumafen-contaminated mouse was fed to each of four captive barn owls, equivalent to 0·11-0·23 mg kg?1 per bird, followed on seven successive days by control diet (i.e. undosed mice). The [14C]flocoumafen dose was eliminated by the owls over the eight-day period in pellets (44%, range 35–55%) and faeces (18%, range 11–21%), with the highest residues being observed in samples from the first 24-h period. Further detailed analysis of the pellets confirmed that flocoumafen residues in the first-day pellets represented 15% (range 8–26%) of the original flocoumafen residues ingested by the barn owls. Calculations based on these data and typical flocoumafen residues in live captured rodents (following baiting) confirm that pellet residue analysis is a sensitive and appropriate method for the non-invasive monitoring of exposure of barn owls to flocoumafen. There were no symptoms of anticoagulant poisoning in any of the birds; two of the birds were successfully paired the next season and produced fledgelings.  相似文献
