Direct electrical transport measurements in a diamond anvil cell provide evidence for the metallization of cesium iodide (CsI) at a pressure of 115 gigapascals. A drop in the temperature dependence of the resistance was found at pressures above 180 gigapascals, indicating that the CsI was superconductive. The superconductivity changed under the influence of a magnetic field to a lower critical temperature and disappeared above 0.3 tesla. The highest critical temperature at which superconductivity was observed was 2 kelvin, and the critical temperature decreased with increasing pressure.  相似文献

The impact of various starter phosphorus (P) fertilizers on the growth, nutrient uptake and dry‐matter (DM) yield of forage maize (Zea mais) continuously cropped on the same area and receiving annual, pre‐sowing, broadcast dressings of liquid and semi‐solid dairy manures was investigated in two replicated plot experiments and in whole‐field comparisons in the UK. In Experiment 1 on a shallow calcareous soil (27 mg l?1 Olsen‐extractable P) in 1996, placement of starter P fertilizer (17 or 32 kg ha?1) did not benefit crop growth or significantly (P > 0·05) increase DM yield at harvest. However, in Experiment 2 on a deeper non‐calcareous soil (41 mg l?1 Olsen‐extractable P) in 1997, placement of starter P fertilizer (19 or 41 kg P ha?1), either applied alone or in combination with starter N fertilizer (10 or 25 kg N ha?1), significantly increased early crop growth (P < 0·01) and DM yield at harvest by 1·3 t ha?1 (P < 0·05) compared with a control without starter N or P fertilizer. Placement of starter N fertilizer alone did not benefit early crop growth, but gave similar yields as P, or N and P, fertilizer treatments at harvest. Large treatment differences in N and P uptake by mid‐August had disappeared by harvest. In field comparisons over the 4‐year period 1994–97, the addition of starter P fertilizer increased field cumulative surplus P by over 70%, but without significantly (P > 0·05) increasing DM yield, or nutrient (N and P) uptake, compared with fields that did not receive starter P fertilizer. The results emphasized the extremely low efficiency with which starter P fertilizers are utilized by forage maize and the need to budget manure and fertilizer P inputs more precisely in order to avoid excessive soil P accumulation and the consequent increased risk of P transfer to water causing eutrophication.  相似文献

Dispersions of colloidal particles in cholesteric liquid crystals form an unusual solid by stabilizing a network of linear defects under tension in the ideal layered structure of the cholesteric. The large length scales of the cholesteric liquid crystals allowed direct observation of the network structure, and its properties were correlated with rheological measurements of elasticity. This system serves as a model for a class of solids formed when particles are mixed with layered materials such as thermotropic and lyotropic smectic liquid crystals and block copolymers.  相似文献

The effects of hydroponic nutrient solution composition and pH on growth and mineral content of green onions was evaluated. Three onion varieties [Allium cepa L. (‘Deep Purple’ and ‘Purplette’) and A. fistulosum L. (‘Kinka’)] were propagated in three nutrient solutions (Peter's Hydro-Sol, modified Hoagland's, and half-strength modified Hoagland's) at two pH levels (5.8 and 6.5) in a three-by-two factorial design applied in a randomized block with three replications. Seeds were germinated in Cropking's Oasis Horticubes under greenhouse conditions and irrigated with tap water. Once the seedlings reached the flag stage, the plants were placed into hydroponic units within the greenhouse and grown under ambient conditions. Plants were harvested 30 d after transplanting to the hydroponic units. The results indicated nutrient solution, pH, and variety significantly affected several plant physiological variables. Total biomass and edible biomass production was as high for plants grown in half-strength Hoagland's nutrient solution as for those grown in the other solutions. Total biomass was greatest for plants grown at a solution pH of 6.5. ‘Deep Purple’ produced a significantly greater overall total biomass than did ‘Purplette’ or ‘Kinka.’ Hydro-Sol tended to produce onions with highest mineral content. Due to the fact that biomass production was as great in the half-strength Hoagland's as in the more concentrated solution and that a pH of 6.5 produced greater total biomass, the half-strength Hoagland's solution at pH 6.5 was the preferred nutrient solution evaluated in this research. Selection of an appropriate nutrient solution must consider both edible biomass production and mineral content. In the research reported here, the solution that produced the greatest biomass did not produce plant material with the highest mineral content.  相似文献

CD4+ T helper 1 (TH1) cells are important mediators of inflammation and are regulated by numerous pathways, including the negative immune receptor Tim-3. We found that Tim-3 is constitutively expressed on cells of the innate immune system in both mice and humans, and that it can synergize with Toll-like receptors. Moreover, an antibody agonist of Tim-3 acted as an adjuvant during induced immune responses, and Tim-3 ligation induced distinct signaling events in T cells and dendritic cells; the latter finding could explain the apparent divergent functions of Tim-3 in these cell types. Thus, by virtue of differential expression on innate versus adaptive immune cells, Tim-3 can either promote or terminate TH1 immunity and may be able to influence a range of inflammatory conditions.  相似文献

The influence of shrubs used as nurse plants was tested on the growth of Cupressus atlantica, on microbial activity and on arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) soil potential in a Mediterranean environment. An experimental plantation was conducted combining uninoculated, arbuscular mycorrhized Cypress seedlings and an association between Lavandula stoechas planted close to newly planted C. atlantica seedlings. After three years plantation, this association between C. atlantica and L. stoechas lead to a higher growth of C. atlantica and better soil microbial characteristics compared to the control treatment. AM mycelium network, total microbial activity, dehydrogenase activity, phosphate-solubilizing fluorescent pseudomonads and N, P nutrient uptake by C. atlantica, were significantly higher in the presence of L. stoechas than those recorded in the other treatments. This pioneer shrubs facilitates the early establishment of Cypress seedlings by improving soil microbial characteristics and AM fungus community development. Given that the facilitative effect of one plant species to another increases with abiotic stress, the benefits of this technique would be useful in reforestation programs undertaken to rehabilitate degraded areas in Mediterranean region.  相似文献

An abnormal lipoprotein was visualized directly in serum by electron microscopy of preparations negatively stained with potassium phosphotungstate. It appears as a unique disk-shaped particle with major axis measuring 400 to 600 angstroms and minor axis measuring about 100 angstroms. Chemical analysis, viscosity measurements, and x-ray diffraction analysis of purified preparations indicate that the particle, consisting of a one-to-one molar mixture of cholesterol and choline phosphatides associated with a small amount of protein, is a flattened vesicle, the wall of which is a continuous lipid bilayer.  相似文献
