The capacity of carbohydrate and ketone bodies metabolism in brain and liver was evaluated in fed and food-deprived Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) in a time period covering from 1 to 7 days (Experiment I), and in Atlantic salmon food deprived for 6 weeks, and food deprived for 4 weeks and refed for 2 weeks (Experiment II). The results obtained demonstrate for the first time in a teleost the existence of changes in brain metabolism due to food deprivation. Thus, decreased glucose levels in plasma are reflected in the brain by an increased mobilization of glycogen reserves, and by a decreased glycolytic capacity. Also, ketone bodies appear to increase their importance as a metabolic fuel from day 7 of food deprivation onwards. A possible increase in the gluconeogenic potential in brain simultaneously is not discarded. All these metabolic changes are reversed under refeeding conditions.  相似文献

We studied 6 singly caged adult female rhesus monkeys to determine whether increased cage size had any effect on behavior or heart rate. Two monkeys at a time were placed in cages 40% larger than their standard cage for 1 week on 2 occasions, using a counter-balanced design. Direct behavioral observations were performed 75 minutes/week on each monkey. Heart rate and general activity were monitored 35 hours/week by a telemetry system. Statistically significant differences were not found in aggressive, submissive, abnormal, or self-abusive behavior, nor in time spent in the front half of the cage, duration of grooming, looking at the observer, or stereotyped or nonstereotyped locomotion. Vocalizations increased the first time in the larger cage, but not the second, and decreased upon the second return to the standard cage. Differences with respect to cage size were not found in heart rate or activity level, although there were significant variations at different times of day. We conclude that modest increases in cage size are unlikely to enrich the environment of singly caged laboratory primates.  相似文献

Agronomists use overlaying protein and yield maps to identify factors limiting cereal crop growth and development. Management decisions can be derived from knowing what and where these limiting factors are. In using protein and yield in this manner, there is an assumption that a physiologically or biologically significant relationship exists between grain protein and grain yield at the local level. In this paper, we investigate whether within-field yield and protein data support this relationship. The protein-yield relationship was modelled using weighted regression with global and local neighbourhoods in both 1-D and 2-D spatial location frameworks. The results from both the 1-D and 2-D analyses showed that the relationships between protein and yield are significant at both the macro (field level) (r2=0.25) and the micro-scale (local within field level) (r2=0.69). The assumption of a significant local relationship between protein and yield is supported by these data, suggesting that management decisions may be determined using such a relationship.  相似文献

AIM:To evaluate whether tolerogenic dendri tic cells (DC) loaded with heat shock protein 60 (HSP60) inhibit the progression of aortic atherosclerotic plaque in hypercholesterolemic apolipoprotein E (Apo- E) -null mice.METHODS:Bone marrow derived DC of the mice were loaded with HSP 60 and co-cultured with rapamycin to generate tolerogenic DC.The tolerogenic DC ,DC loaded only HSP60 and PBS were injected into the ApoE-null mice at 8 weeks of age for three times at a one-week interval.8 weeks after the last injection,aorta were harvested for HE staining and anti-CD4+T cell immunostaining.Resp onses of pleenic cells to HSP60 were also evaluated.RESULTS:Compared with DC,DCHSP60 expressed higher levels of CD86,and stimulated T lymphocytes to proliferation significantly,while the tolerogenic DC expressed lower levels of CD86,and inhibited T lymphocytes to p roliferation.After immunization with different injection,the numbers of CD4+ T cells in plaque were increased significantly in DCHSP60 group vs in PBS g roup (P<0.01).On the other hand,they were reduced significantly in rap-DC HSP60 group vs in PBS group (P<0.01).Plaque areas in the tolerog enic DC group were smaller than that in the PBS group (P<0.01).Stimulated by HSP60,pleenic cells in tolerogenic DC group secreted more IL-10,while in DC HSP60 group more IFN-γ secretion was observed.CONCLUSION:HSP60 specific tolerogenic DC immunization attenuate d the progression of plaque,indicating a new immune therapy for atherosclerosis.  相似文献

Tropical deforestation and species endangerment: the role of remote sensing   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Initial results of a pilot study to link remotely-sensed information on tropical forest loss to field-based information on species endangerment are reported here. LANDSAT multispectral scanner (MSS) imagery from 1973 and 1988 were used to estimate net forest removal (29% of forest area), regrowth (7% of forest area, including possible artifactual errors), and forest edges in Mabira Forest in southeastern Uganda during the 15-year period. Of the forest remaining, the percentage that was heavily disturbed increased from 18% to 42%. This change in forest density was observable with the MSS imagery. The total forest edge-to-area ratio (including edges interior to the forest boundary) increased by 29% over the period. Although four distinct types of closed tropical forest, based on structure or dominance, could be recognized on the ground, the types could not be distinguished by differences in spectral reflectance in the four MSS bands. Closed tropical forest could be readily distinguished from exotic conifer plantations, banana plantations, and other non-forest vegetation types. Field measurements in Mabira and other Ugandan rain forests, and in rain forest isolates on the Atherton Tableland of North Queensland, are being made to relate changes in forest fragmentation to resulting changes in species abundance, structural form of the forests, and morphological diversity of target populations. Possible applications of conservation biology theory and modeling to these data are briefly discussed.  相似文献

The mobile laboratory provides a safe, rapid and flexible platform to provide effective diagnosis of Ebola virus as well as additional differential diagnostic agents in remote settings of equatorial Africa. During the 2007 Democratic Republic of Congo outbreak of Ebola-Zaire, the mobile laboratory was set up in two different locations by two separate teams within a day of equipment arriving in each location. The first location was in Mweka where our laboratory took over the diagnostic laboratory space of the local hospital, whereas the second location, approximately 50 km south near Kampungu at the epicentre of the outbreak, required local labour to fabricate a tent structure as a suitable pre-existing structure was not available. In both settings, the laboratory was able to quickly set up, providing accurate and efficient molecular diagnostics (within 3 h of receiving samples) for 67 individuals, including four cases of Ebola, seven cases of Shigella and 13 cases of malaria. This rapid turn-around time provides an important role in the support of patient management and epidemiological surveillance.  相似文献

Serum levels of the amino-terminal peptide of Type III procollagen (P-III-P) were assayed by radioimmunoassay in 48 Rhesus monkeys from 0.7 to 26.4 years of age. Serum P-III-P levels in ten juvenile monkeys (0.7-4.7 yrs.) were significantly higher (84.5 +/- 66.2 ng/ml, p = 0.05) and ranged from 29.6 to 238.0 ng/ml as compared with 38 monkeys over 5 years of age (21.7 - 9.4 ng/ml), which ranged from 8.5 to 55.5 ng/ml. No significant differences in serum P-III-P levels were observed between any age groups over 5 years of age (5-10, 10-15, 15-20, and > 20) or between male and female monkeys within any age category.  相似文献
