The method of lung lavage under fiberoptic control allowed collection of alveolar cells in non-anaesthetized adult cows.The median section of the diaphragmatic lobe was lavaged with five consecutive aliquots of 30 ml each. Every one was analysed separately. A mean of 25.6% of instilled fluid was recovered and this is lower than amounts obtained on isolated lungs or in anaesthetized calves (about 50%).The cellular formula of 30 samples showed 83.5% of macrophages, 6.0% of lymphocytes, 9.4% of polymorphonuclear cells, 0.5% of monocytes. Cellular viability and total cell count were similar to previously published data. All results were found to be independent of the washing sequence. This simple and well tolerated technique appeared to be a useful tool for the study of defence mechanisms of deep lung.  相似文献

Breed-related risk factors for canine parvovirus enteritis   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Case records of 305 dogs with canine parvovirus (CPV) enteritis, seen at the Veterinary Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania from July 1, 1981 to Aug 31, 1982, were selected on the basis of admitting diagnoses or signs of diarrhea and vomiting. The case records were subdivided into 3 diagnostic categories, based on final diagnoses and laboratory test results. There were 96 dogs with definite CPV enteritis, 139 with possible CPV enteritis, and 70 with unlikely CPV enteritis. These cases were then stratified by animal's age (less than or equal to 6 months or greater than 6 months) and specific hospital service (medicine or emergency). A control group was selected from all canine case records from the Veterinary Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania for conditions other than the criteria used in selecting the case group. Approximately 2 hospital patients were selected for each CPV enteritis case by frequency matching for hospital service and age. The proportion of dogs with definite CPV enteritis that had each of the clinical signs that were studied was greater than that of dogs in the other CPV enteritis diagnostic categories. The overall survival rate for dogs with definite CPV enteritis was 64.0%; survival was not associated with any given clinical sign of disease. Odds ratios (OR) for the risk of CPV enteritis were calculated for breeds with 3 or more dogs with definite CPV enteritis. The Doberman Pinschers (OR = 3.1), Rottweilers (OR = 6.0), and English Springer Spaniels (OR = 8.1) had a significantly increased risk of CPV enteritis.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Pigs infected with an African swine fever field isolate of modified virulence became acutely thrombocytopenic four to five days after the onset of fever and viremia. By eight days after inoculation, all pigs were thrombocytopenic. Immunofluorescence microscopy demonstrated that 2 to 10% of the megakaryocytes were infected. By 13 days after inoculation, platelet counts returned to within normal limits, and there was megakaryocytic hyperplasia despite a continued viremia. Secondary complications delayed the return of normal circulating platelet levels in some pigs. The clinical findings of African swine fever are discussed in light of the gross and histologic lesions.  相似文献

The effects of Escherichia coli heat-stable enterotoxin (ST) on chloride efflux rate were investigated in 3 fractions of enterocytes isolated in a villus-to-crypt gradient from porcine jejunum. There was no difference in chloride efflux rates between mature and immature cells from controls. Heat-stable enterotoxin significantly increased chloride efflux in all fractions. Morphine inhibited ST-augmented secretion in mature enterocytes. Atropine or clonidine had no effect. Calcium efflux rates and glucose or glutamic acid metabolism were not altered by ST. The results indicate that ST may stimulate chloride secretion in both villus and crypt cells and that opiates inhibit intestinal secretion by a direct action on villus epithelial cells.  相似文献

Clavulanic acid (CA) competitively inhibits beta-lactamase hydrolysis of penicillins in vitro. Treatment with amoxycillin combined with clavulanic acid (A-CA) was compared with placebo in a blind study in cats with experimental cystitis caused by Escherichia coli demonstrating in vitro resistance to amoxycillin. Bacterial cystitis was induced in 20 cats by bladder infusion of 5 ml of 0.05 per cent alcoholic salicylic acid followed after 24 hours by a brain-heart infusion broth of E coli (10(8) colony forming units ml-1) previously found to be resistant to amoxycillin in vitro (minimum inhibitory concentration over 512 micrograms ml-1). Four days after infection, cats were randomly divided into two groups of 10 and treated with amoxycillin combined with clavulanic acid or placebo for 10 days. When compared to the placebo-treated group, the A-CA treated group showed: reduced quantitative bacterial counts in urine on days 7 (P less than 0.001) and 14 (P less than 0.02); reduced culture positive urine on days 7 (P less than 0.001) and 14 (P less than 0.001); and less severe inflammation on histological examination of the bladder and urethra (P less than 0.01). It was concluded that A-CA was effective in reducing the bacterial count and reducing the histopathological changes in the bladder and urethra in an experimental model of acute bacterial cystitis in cats infected with an E coli demonstrating in vitro resistance to amoxycillin.  相似文献

The purpose of the present investigation was to determine the effects of severe dietary protein restriction on soleus (S) and tibialis anterior (TA) fiber number and S muscle fiber area, composition and length. The S and TA muscles were removed from one leg of 12 male Sprague-Dawley rats at 21 d of age. Six of these animals were placed on a 1% protein diet until 42 d of age, while six served as age-matched controls. Muscle fiber number was determined by the nitric acid digestion method for S muscles and the mean fiber dry-weight estimation method for the TA muscles. Mean fiber numbers for the S muscles were 2,655 +/- 42 and 2,669 +/- 71 for the treatment group at 21 and 42 d of age, respectively, and 15,989 +/- 899 and 16,067 +/- 695 at 21 and 42 d of age, respectively, for the TA muscle. For the age-matched control group, fiber numbers for the S muscle were 2,928 +/- 78 and 2,949 +/- 76 at 21 and 42 d, respectively, and 17,964 +/- 281 and 18,445 +/- 296 at 21 and 42 d, respectively, for the TA muscle. The S muscle fiber area, composition and length were studied using 12 male Sprague-Dawley rats. Six animals were placed on the 1% protein diet from 21 to 42 d of age, while six animals served as age-matched controls. The S muscle fiber area was 33.1 and 51.5% smaller for type I and type II fibers, respectively, for animals fed the 1% protein diet. Bronchoalveolar lavage was performed 5 times, sequentially, on 3 healthy foals while each foal was 6 to 63 days of age. Phagocytosis and bactericidal assays were performed on recovered alveolar macrophages. Corynebacterium equi and alveolar macrophages at a ratio of 10:1 were incubated for 1 hour in medium containing 1% heat-inactivated rabbit anti-C equi serum. After incubation, greater than 90% of the alveolar macrophages contained at least 1 ingested bacterium and each alveolar macrophage contained 9.4 +/- 1.0 bacteria (mean +/- SE). After alveolar macrophages and C equi were incubated for 1 hour in medium containing heat-inactivated pooled normal horse serum, approximately 24% of the alveolar macrophages contained at least 1 bacterium and each alveolar macrophage contained 0.8 +/- 0.7 bacteria. From 6 to 61 days of age, each foal had significantly (P less than 0.05) decreased phagocytic activity by alveolar macrophages, but a significant change in killing of C equi by alveolar macrophages was not found in the foals from 21 to 61 days of age. After incubating alveolar macrophages and C equi for 4 hours in vitro, approximately 75% of ingested C equi remained viable.  相似文献

A retrospective study was conducted to determine disease patterns in reptilian and amphibian populations at the Detroit Zoo from 1973 through 1983. In the reptilian population (mean +/- SD = 285.2 +/- 28), overall annual mortality rates were 1% to 40%. Mortality rates were highest in the fall months (20%) and lowest in the winter months (6%). The most frequently affected reptiles were iguana (Iguana iguana), reticulated python (Python reticulatus), rattlesnakes (Crotalus spp), common boa (Constrictor constrictor), and lizards (various genera of suborder Lacertilia). Of the 1,300 reptilian deaths from 1973 through 1983, 36.6% were caused by microbial agents, 12% by parasites, 11.6% by trauma, and 9.3% by nutritional deficiencies. The main microbial organisms that caused death were Aeromonas spp, Salmonella spp, Pseudomonas spp, Proteus spp, and Edwardsiella spp. The main parasites that caused death were Entamoeba spp and lungworms. Among amphibians, frogs and toads were the most frequently affected, and starvation and trauma were the most frequent causes of death.  相似文献

Herring gulls (Larus argentatus) kept in captivity for a maximum of 28 days developed marked heterophilia and nonregenerative anemia. These hematologic findings remained abnormal throughout captivity. Concurrently, severe amyloid deposition was seen in vessel walls of the spleen and in other tissues, and vacuolar degeneration of catecholamine-producing cells of the adrenal glands was found in gulls necropsied at various intervals. Behavioral signs of stress were seen in the early stages of captivity, but were not seen in most gulls after day 3. Clinical signs referable to the microscopic lesions were not observed in this study. Therefore, gulls brought into captivity appear to adapt behaviorally, but maintain severe microscopic lesions and an abnormal hemogram.  相似文献
