I have indicated here some features of a kind of entity which I have called a cultural identity system, and I have focused on a variety of this general type-the persistent system. In general terms it is best described as a system of beliefs and sentiments concerning historical events. I suggest using the term "a people" for the human beings who, at any given time, hold beliefs of this kind. These are phenomena with which we have been long familiar, but they have not been systematically studied by any but a few investigators. I have emphasized that a persistent system is a cumulative cultural phenomenon, an open-ended system that defines a course of action for the people believing in it. Such peoples are able to maintain continuity in their experience and their conception of themselves in a wide variety of sociocultural environments. I hold that certain kinds of identifiable conditions give rise to this type of cultural system. These may best be summarized as an oppositional process involving the interactions of individuals in the environment of a state or a similar large-scale organization. The oppositional process frequently produces intense collective consciousness and a high degree of internal solidarity. This is accompanied by a motivation for individuals to continue the kind of experience that is "stored" in the identity system in symbolic form. The persistent identity system is more stable as a cultural structure than are large-scale political organizations. When large-scale states disintegrate, they often appear to decompose into cultural systems of the persistent type. Large-scale organizations also give rise to the kind of environment that can result in the formation of new persistent systems. It is possible that, while being formed, states depend for their impetus on the accumulated energy of persistent peoples. A proposition for consideration is that states tend to dissipate the energy of peoples after transforming that energy into state-level integrations, and then regularly break down in the absence of mechanisms for maintaining human motivations in the large-scale organizations that they generate.  相似文献

To examine ovarian follicular response to low-dose injections of luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH), 32 anovulatory, suckled beef cows were allotted to one of four treatment groups and injected with either saline or 500 ng LHRH every 2 h for 48 or 96 h, starting 21.4 +/- .4 d after parturition. Two hours after the last injection of LHRH, cows were ovariectomized and 10 to 15 ovarian follicles per pair of ovaries were removed and categorized by diameter as small (1.0 to 3.9 mm), medium (4.0 to 7.9 mm) or large (greater than or equal to 8.0 mm). Injections of LHRH did not affect (P greater than .10) steroid levels in small follicles or numbers of gonadotropin receptors in small and medium follicles. Concentrations of progesterone in fluid of medium follicles increased 1.5-fold (P less than .05) after 96 h of LHRH, whereas concentrations of estradiol and androstenedione were unchanged. In fluid of large follicles, concentrations of progesterone were fourfold greater (P less than .05) in LHRH-treated than in control cows at 48 h, but by 96 h progesterone was twofold greater (P less than .05) in control than LHRH-treated cows. In large follicles, concentrations of estradiol were unchanged (P greater than .10) after 48 h of LHRH injections but after 96 h estradiol was twofold greater (P less than .05) in LHRH-treated than control cows. Increased concentrations of estradiol in large follicles coincided with increased numbers of binding sites for human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) but not follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) in granulosa and theca.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Histological examination was performed in 123 cats with primary nasal and paranasal sinus tumours; 117 had undergone surgical biopsy and six necropsy. Special stains and immunohistochemistry were performed on poorly differentiated cases. Ninety-two percent (113/123) of the tumours were malignant. There was an increased risk for old cats (mean age of 10.9 years), and a male predilection (59% males). Clinical signs and breeds varied with the histological type of tumour. Thirty-nine percent (48/123) of the cases presented with nasal discharge, 21% (26/123) with dyspnea, 20% (24/123) with facial swelling, and 15% (19/123) with epistaxis. Forty-three percent (53/123) of the tumours were of epithelial origin. Adenocarcinomas (18/53) and squamous cell carcinomas (17/53) were the most common epithelial tumours. Fifty percent (26/53) of the epithelial tumours originated from the pseudo-stratified respiratory epithelium of the nasal cavity, 28% (15/53) from the stratified squamous epithelium of the vestibule, 9% (5/53) from olfactory epithelium, 9% (5/53) from submucosal glands and 4% (2/53) from minor salivary glands. Malignant lymphoma (35/123) was the most common tumour. Seventy-one percent (25/35) of the malignant lymphomas were B-cell tumours and 29% (10/35) were T-cell tumours. Six cases of malignant lymphomas were proved to be epitheliotropic T-cell lymphomas. This is the first report of a primary nasal epitheliotropic T-cell lymphoma in cats.  相似文献

To determine if specific binding of 125I-labeled gonadotropins to granulosa and thecal cells, or concentrations of steroids in ovarian follicles change during the postpartum anovulatory period, 21 suckled beef cows were slaughtered on d 7, 14, 28, 42 or 56 after parturition (n = 4 to 6 per d). After slaughter, 10 to 15 follicles were dissected from each pair of ovaries and categorized by diameter: small (1.0 to 3.9 mm), medium (4.0 to 7.9 mm) or large (greater than or equal to 8 mm). Progesterone (221 to 612 ng/ml), androstenedione (48 to 94 ng/ml) and estradiol (2.7 to 23.9 ng/ml) did not change (P greater than .10) in fluid of small or medium follicles from d 7 to 42 to 56 after parturition. Similarly, specific binding of human chorionic gonadotropin (125I-hCG) or follicle stimulating hormone (125I-oFSH) to homogenates of small, medium or large follicles did not change (P greater than .05). In contrast, progesterone in fluid of large follicles increased (P less than .05) 3.4-fold between d 7 and 14, but decreased (P less than .05) 55% between d 14 and 28. Concentrations of androstenedione in fluid of large follicles did not change (P greater than .10) from d 7 to 42 to 56. Concentrations of estradiol in fluid of large follicles remained constant between d 7 and 14, but increased (P less than .05) 4.2-fold between d 14 and 28. Ovarian follicular growth, function and turnover in cattle: a review   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Studies in cattle assessing changes in number and size of antral follicles, concentrations of estradiol, androgens and progesterone in serum and follicular fluid, and numbers of gonadotropin receptors per follicle during repetitive estrous cycles and postpartum anestrus are reviewed. The rate of growth of small follicles (1 to 3 mm) into larger follicles increases as the estrous cycle progresses from d 1 to 18 (d 0 = estrus). Size of the largest antral follicle present on the ovary also increases with advancement of the estrous cycle. Most large follicles (greater than 10 mm) persist on the ovarian surface for 5 d or more between d 3 and 13 of the bovine estrous cycle. After d 13, most of these large follicles are replaced more frequently by new growing follicles (turnover) with an increased probability for recruitment of the ovulatory follicle after d 18. More research is needed to determine the time required for growth of bovine follicles from small to large antral size and evoke recruitment of the ovulatory follicle. Factors that regulate selection of the ovulatory follicle are unknown but may involve increased frequency of LH pulses in blood, altered blood flow and(or) changes in intrafollicular steroids and proteins. Quantitative evaluation of ovarian follicles indicated occurrence of consistent short-term changes in fluid estradiol and numbers of luteinizing hormone receptors in cells of large follicles only during the pre-ovulatory period. Presumably, low concentrations of follicular estradiol found during most of the estrous cycle are not due to a lack of aromatizable precursor or follicle-stimulating hormone receptors. Follicular fluid concentrations of progesterone increase only near the time of ovulation. Little is known about changes in follicular growth, turnover and function during postpartum anestrus in cattle. However, preliminary data suggest that the steroidogenic capacity of large follicles changes markedly during the postpartum period.  相似文献

More than 131 x 10(6) metric tons (MT) of inorganic sediments accumulated in coastal wetlands when Hurricanes Katrina and Rita crossed the Louisiana coast in 2005, plus another 281 x 10(6) MT when accumulation was prorated for open water area. The annualized combined amount of inorganic sediments per hurricane equals (i) 12% of the Mississippi River's suspended load, (ii) 5.5 times the inorganic load delivered by overbank flooding before flood protection levees were constructed, and (iii) 227 times the amount introduced by a river diversion built for wetland restoration. The accumulation from hurricanes is sufficient to account for all the inorganic sediments in healthy saltmarsh wetlands.  相似文献

Cattle genetically selected for twin ovulations and births (Twinner) exhibit increased ovarian follicular development, increased ovulation rate, and greater blood and follicular fluid IGF-1 concentrations compared with contemporary cattle not selected for twins (Control). Experimental objectives were to 1) assess relationships among aromatase (CYP19A1), IGF-1 (IGF1), IGF-2 receptor (IGF2R), and FSH receptor (FSHR) mRNA expression in small (≤5 mm) antral follicles and 2) determine their association with increased numbers of developing follicles in ovaries of Twinner females. Ovaries were collected from mature, cyclic (d 3 to 6) Twinner (n = 11), and Control (n = 12) cows at slaughter and pieces of cortical tissue were fixed and embedded in paraffin. Expression of mRNA was evaluated by in situ hybridization using (35)S-UTP-labeled antisense and sense probes for CYP19A1, FSHR, IGF1, and IGF2R mRNA. Silver grain density was quantified within the granulosa and theca cells of individual follicles (2 to 7 follicles/cow) by Bioquant image analysis. Follicles of Twinners tended to be smaller in diameter than Controls (1.9 ± 0.1 vs. 2.3 ± 0.1 mm; P = 0.08), but thickness of granulosa layer did not differ (P > 0.1) by genotype. Relative abundance of CYP19A1 (P < 0.01) and FSHR (P < 0.05) mRNA was greater in granulosa cells of Twinners vs. Controls, respectively, whereas IGF2R mRNA expression was less in both granulosa (P < 0.01) and theca (P < 0.05) cells in follicles of Twinners vs. Controls, respectively. Abundance of CYP19A1 mRNA in granulosa cells was correlated negatively with IGF2R mRNA expression in both granulosa (r = -0.33; P < 0.01) and theca (r = -0.21; P = 0.05) cells. Expression of IGF1 mRNA was primarily in granulosa cells, including cumulus cells, and its expression did not differ between Twinners vs. Controls (P > 0.10). Detected increases in CYP19A1 and FSHR, but not IGF1, mRNA expression along with decreases in IGF2R mRNA expression in individual follicles of Twinners support the hypothesis that increased follicular development and steroidogenesis in Twinner females result from increased extra-ovarian IGF-1 production. Furthermore, a reduction in follicular IGF2R mRNA expression accompanied by a reduction in receptor numbers would increase availability of free IGF-2 and its stimulation of follicular development in Twinners.  相似文献

Leptin: a possible metabolic signal affecting reproduction   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8  
Since its discovery in 1994, leptin, a protein hormone synthesized and secreted by adipose tissue, has been shown to regulate feed intake in several species including sheep and pigs. Although a nimiety of information exists regarding the physiological role of leptin in rodents and humans, the regulation and action of leptin in domestic animals is less certain. Emerging evidence in several species indicates that leptin may also affect the hypothalamo-pituitary-gonadal axis. Leptin receptor mRNA is present in the anterior pituitary and hypothalamus of several species, including sheep. In rats, effects of leptin on GnRH, LH and FSH secretion have been inconsistent, with leptin exhibiting both stimulatory and inhibitory action in vivo and in vitro. Evidence to support direct action of leptin at the level of the gonad indicates that the leptin receptor and its mRNA are present in ovarian tissue of several species, including cattle. These leptin receptors are functional, since leptin inhibits insulin-induced steroidogenesis of both granulosa and thecal cells of cattle in vitro. Leptin receptor mRNA is also found in the testes of rodents. As with the ovary, these receptors are functional, at least in rats, since leptin inhibits hCG-induced testosterone secretion by Leydig cells in vitro. During pregnancy, placental production of leptin may be a major contributor to the increase in maternal leptin in primates but not rodents. However, in both primates and rodents, leptin receptors exist in placental tissues and may regulate metabolism of the fetal-placental unit. As specific leptin immunoassays are developed for domestic animals, in vivo associations may then be made among leptin, body energy stores, dietary energy intake and reproductive function. This may lead to a more definitive role of leptin in domestic animal reproduction.  相似文献
