Summary In a study designed to investigate the nature and basis of the relationships between grain yield (GY) and grain protein concentration (GBC) in common wheat, 11 populations, including 4 homozygous-homogeneous and 7 heterozygous-heterogeneous populations, were evaluated in a space planted and a solid seeded trial. Analysis of yield and protein data from each population revealed that phenotypic and environmental correlations between GY and GPC were negative and highly significant, whereas genetic correlation was significant in only one of 7 segregating populations studied. These results suggested that the inverse relationships between GY and GPC, although phenotypically real, were not caused by genetic factors. It would appear that environmental factors, source-sink interactions, and dilution of protein by non-protein compounds were the major agents that caused undesirable associations between the two traits.Contribution No. of the Department of Plant Science, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada T6G2P5  相似文献

With the current water shortage in East Africa improving crop water use is vital especially in the arid and semi-arid regions of Ethiopia. To understand the response of barley to water and to simulate the biomass and grain yield of barley under various water inputs and planting dates, we tested the FAO AquaCrop model versions 3.0 using independent data sets during the cropping seasons of 2006, 2008 and 2009 at Mekelle site in northern Ethiopia. We found that the model is valid to simulate the barley biomass and grain yield under various planting dates in the study site. AquaCrop model can be used in the evaluation of optimal planting time. Out of the tested planting dates, planting on July 4 (early sowing) was found to maximize barley biomass, grain and water use efficiency. The model can also be used in the evaluation of irrigation strategies. Barley showed slightly lower performance under mild water stress condition compared to full irrigation condition. However, the model has indicated the possibility of obtaining more biomass and grain yield from a relatively larger barley field under (deficit irrigation) mild stress condition.  相似文献

Mexican poppy (Argemone mexicana) is a widespread noxious annual weed associated with crops such as corn (Zea mays L.), and this weed is persistent because it produces a seed bank. This invasive weed species must be controlled even in the dry season because Mexican poppy has a deep-reaching root system, which taps water from deep soil layers. Cases of a human death caused by Mexican poppy seeds in South Africa, India, and other Eastern countries were reported from the early years of the twentieth century. However, when weeds are controlled uniformly instead of site-specific or precision farming method across the spatially variable fields, there are environmental pollution challenges. Site-specific weed control techniques have gained interest in the precision farming community over the last years mainly because of Global Positioning System (GPS) applications, and a controlled measure of herbicides are applied where there are weeds in the field, and areas with more clusters of weeds receive the correct amount of herbicide application. Mexican poppy has prickles and is a nuisance to farmers, and herbicides represent a severe health hazard to humans due to chemical concentrations in water. For that reason, we propose the design of a site-specific weed control plan to use a row-guided robot to detect and identify weeds with accuracy, control speed timeously, and spray herbicides with a high level of precision and automation. These robotics methods are reported to be environmentally conscious, and economically efficient with less labour and management. The proposed method of deep learning neural networks, which use row-guided robots, a machine is trained on multiple images to identify weeds automatically from the main crop, and release a controlled measure of herbicides based on weed location and density, and spray weeds on-the-go upon emergence.  相似文献

Piezoelectric materials have many applications at cryogenic temperatures. However, the piezoelectric response below 10 kelvin is diminished, making the use of these materials somewhat marginal. Results are presented on strontium titanate (SrTiO3), which exhibits a rapidly increasing piezoelectric response with decreasing temperature below 50 kelvin; the magnitude of its response around 1 kelvin is comparable to that of the best materials at room temperature. This "giant" piezoelectric response may open the way for a broad class of applications including use in ultralow-temperature scanning microscopies and in a magnetic field-insensitive thermometer. These observations, and the possible divergence of the mechanical response to electric fields at even lower temperatures, may arise from an apparent quantum critical point at absolute zero.  相似文献

Adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate stimulated production of carbon dioxide and lipid from glucose, whereas its dibutyryl derivative inhibited this conversion. Addition of the dibutyryl derivative to the isolated fat cell further stimulated lipolysis induced by adrenocorticotropic hormone, whereas addition of adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate inhibited this lipolysis. Acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL; FAB M3) is characterized by a predominance of malignant promyelocytes that carry a reciprocal translocation between the long arms of chromosomes 15 and 17, t(15;17) (q22;q11.2-q12). This translocation has become diagnostic for APL, as it is present in almost 100 percent of cases. A Not I linking clone was used to detect this translocation initially on pulsed-field gel electrophoresis and subsequently with conventional Southern (DNA) analysis. The breakpoints in ten APL cases examined were shown to cluster in a 12-kb region of chromosome 17, containing two CpG-rich islands. The region is the first intron of the retinoic acid receptor alpha gene (RARA).  相似文献

Naked metallic and semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) were dissolved in organic solutions by derivatization with thionychloride and octadecylamine. Both ionic (charge transfer) and covalent solution-phase chemistry with concomitant modulation of the SWNT band structure were demonstrated. Solution-phase near-infrared spectroscopy was used to study the effects of chemical modifications on the band gaps of the SWNTs. Reaction of soluble SWNTs with dichlorocarbene led to functionalization of the nanotube walls.  相似文献

Local control of the domain orientation in diblock copolymer thin films can be obtained by the application of electric fields on micrometer-length scales. Thin films of an asymmetric polystyrene-polymethylmethacrylate diblock copolymer, with cylindrical polymethylmethacrylate microdomains, were spin-coated onto substrates previously patterned with planar electrodes. The substrates, 100-nanometer-thick silicon nitride membranes, allow direct observation of the electrodes and the copolymer domain structure by transmission electron microscopy. The cylinders aligned parallel to the electric field lines for fields exceeding 30 kilovolts per centimeter, after annealing at 250°C in an inert atmosphere for 24 hours. This technique could find application in nanostructure fabrication.  相似文献

A number of important and currently unresolved issues in the global geology and geophysics of Venus will be addressable with the radar imaging, altimetry, and gravity measurements now forthcoming from the Magellan mission. Among these are the global volcanic flux and the rate of formation of new crust; the global heat flux and its regional variations; the relative importance of localized hot spots and linear centers of crustal spreading to crustal formation and tectonics; and the planform of mantle convection on Venus and the nature of the interactions among interior convective flow, near-surface deformation and magmatism.  相似文献

Huckleberry Gold is a purple-skin, yellow-flesh fresh market cultivar with similar culinary qualities to the market standard Yukon Gold. It has lower specific gravity, sucrose and vitamin C content, but a significantly higher level of tuber antioxidants than Yukon Gold. Notable disease resistant characteristics are Potato virus X resistance based on the presence of molecular markers for the PVX resistance genes, Nb and Rx1. In addition it also has the H1 gene present which confers resistance to the potato cyst nematode, Globodera rostochiensis, which has been confirmed by bioassay to pathotype Ro1. The size profile of Huckleberry Gold is smaller than Yukon Gold, allowing a better fit into specialty markets that are geared to smaller size for fresh use. Huckleberry Gold represents the first purple-skin, yellow-flesh cultivar to come from the Northwest (Tri-State) Potato Variety Development program.  相似文献
