The relationship between the serological classification system for serogroup B and for serogroup H of Bacteroides nodosus and cross-protection between subgroups within these serogroups was examined. Protection against ovine footrot following vaccination was achieved against other subgroup strains provided sufficient cross-reactive antibody was induced by shared pilus antigens. Within serogroup B, better cross-protection against one subgroup was obtained with a pili vaccine than a whole cell vaccine which correlated with higher pilus antibody titres induced by the former. For serogroup H, a lack of cross-protection and serological reactivity between subgroups was demonstrated, which indicates that the prototype strain of subgroup H2 should be designated a new serogroup. 相似文献

The objective of this research was to evaluate the efficacy of two antimicrobials (ampicillin and ceftiofur), a modified-live porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) vaccine, and low dose exposure to Streptococcus suis on disease associated with PRRSV/S. suis coinfection. Fifty-six, crossbred, PRRSV-free pigs were weaned at 10-12 days of age and randomly assigned to five treatment groups. All pigs were inoculated with 2ml of 10(6.4) TCID50/ml of high virulence PRRSV isolate VR-2385 intranasally at 29-31 days of age (day 0 of the study) followed 7 days later by intranasal inoculation with 2ml of 10(8.9)colony forming units(CFU)/ml S. suis type 2 isolate ISU VDL #40634/94. Pigs in group 1 (n=10) served as untreated infected positive controls. Pigs in group 2 (n=12) were treated with 5.0 mg/kg ceftiofur hydrochloride intramuscularly (IM) on days 8, 11, and 14. Pigs in group 3 (n=11) were treated with 11 mg/kg ampicillin IM on days 8-10. Pigs in group 4 (n=12) were vaccinated 14 days prior to PRRSV challenge with a commercial modified-live PRRSV vaccine. Pigs in group 5 (n=11) were exposed to a 1:100 dilution of the S. suis challenge inoculum 19 days prior to S. suis challenge. Mortality was 80, 25, 82, 83, and 36% in groups 1-5, respectively. The reduced dose S. suis exposure had some residual virulence, evidenced by S. suis induced meningitis in two pigs after exposure. Treatment with ceftiofur hydrochloride and reduced dose exposure to S. suis were the only treatments which significantly (P<0.05) reduced mortality associated with PRRSV/S. suis coinfection, significantly (P<0.05) reduced recovery of S. suis from tissues at necropsy, and significantly (P<0.05) reduced the severity of gross lung lesions. 相似文献

Augmentation of small rare species populations is sometimes suggested on genetic grounds. However, outbreeding depression via dilution of local adaptation or break-up of genomic coadaptation may occur. These effects depend on the causes of population divergence. Here, we compare genetic measures of population divergence in Liatris scariosa var. novae-angliae, a rare New England perennial. We measured GST, neutral marker subdivision, and QST, quantitative subdivision of propagule and juvenile plant traits. GST was relatively high. QST for leaf shape exceeded GST, indicating local adaptation, while QST for other traits fell within or below the GST range. Local adaptation appears low for juvenile traits, although the high GST cautions against translocation because of potential coadaptation. If translocation is still required, however, donor populations should contain high quantitative genetic diversity. We assess population size and allozyme diversity as predictors of quantitative genetic variation, but find these poor proxies for direct measurement. 相似文献

Hierarchical nanostructures of lead sulfide nanowires resembling pine trees were synthesized by chemical vapor deposition. Structural characterization revealed a screwlike dislocation in the nanowire trunks with helically rotating epitaxial branch nanowires. It is suggested that the screw component of an axial dislocation provides the self-perpetuating steps to enable one-dimensional crystal growth, in contrast to mechanisms that require metal catalysts. The rotating trunks and branches are the consequence of the Eshelby twist of screw dislocations with a dislocation Burgers vector along the 110 directions having an estimated magnitude of 6 +/- 2 angstroms for the screw component. The results confirm the Eshelby theory of dislocations, and the proposed nanowire growth mechanism could be general to many materials. 相似文献

Sulfur-containing compounds of ramson (Allium ursinum L.) are responsible for its traditional use in terms of culinary and medicinal purposes. Leaves and bulbs were investigated for their contents of cysteine sulfoxides (volatile precursors) as well as volatile compounds released from minced plant material. Plants were analyzed during the whole vegetation period, focused on the months from March to June. Additionally, within the dormancy period bulbs were analyzed again and alliinase activity was determined. The pattern of volatile compounds was analyzed both by SPME/GC-MS and by SDE/GC-MS. Compared to each other, SDE exhibited a wider spectrum of detectable volatile compounds. The quality and quantity of volatiles significantly depended on the time of harvest. The highest amounts of volatile precursors can be gained in March and April, shortly before flowering time (up to 0.4% of total cysteine sulfoxides). The main cysteine sulfoxides were alliin and isoalliin. It has been found that alliinase of A. ursinum exhibited properties similar to those of alliinase of garlic (Allium sativum L.), but differing in terms of substrate specificity. 相似文献

In late summer 1999, an outbreak of human encephalitis occurred in the northeastern United States that was concurrent with extensive mortality in crows (Corvus species) as well as the deaths of several exotic birds at a zoological park in the same area. Complete genome sequencing of a flavivirus isolated from the brain of a dead Chilean flamingo (Phoenicopterus chilensis), together with partial sequence analysis of envelope glycoprotein (E-glycoprotein) genes amplified from several other species including mosquitoes and two fatal human cases, revealed that West Nile (WN) virus circulated in natural transmission cycles and was responsible for the human disease. Antigenic mapping with E-glycoprotein-specific monoclonal antibodies and E-glycoprotein phylogenetic analysis confirmed these viruses as WN. This North American WN virus was most closely related to a WN virus isolated from a dead goose in Israel in 1998. 相似文献
